Aibu to ask if it is unhygienic to sit on the bed wearing outdoor clothes

Chatting to DD who in passing said she won’t sit on her bed wearing clothes she has been outside in, particularly if she’s used public transport. Is this a thing? Am I a bit grubby for not giving it a second thought? I wouldn’t lie on the bed wearing my shoes but other than that don’t give it a second thought.

@Underbox

My DD is exactly the same, especially when she's been on the train. She'll come home and immediately change her clothes or put on PJs before sitting on her bed. I would probably do the same to be honest. Each to their own, no big deal. I think Covid has a lot to answer for!
Public transport is grubby though. People put feet (in shoes) on seats, spill drinks and, on one memorable occasion, I saw someone wiping snot on the seat after picking his nose Envy
sst1234 · 10/06/2021 17:15

Not hygienic at all. When you sit on surfaces outside the home, your clothes are picking up artefacts from other people’s poor hygiene. Yuck

ClaudiaWankleman · 10/06/2021 17:21

If you've been on public transport a lot, you might feel more strongly. I can smell it on DH.

Smell what? The unwashed masses?

OverTheRubicon · 10/06/2021 17:28

I would sit on top of it, not in it. If I'm off a plane or something I like to change first, but otherwise think these things can get a bit obsessive.

MayIDestroyYou · 10/06/2021 17:30

I was brought up to change my clothes when I came home - we all did, and still do. So at home it would be rare for my outdoor clothes to encounter my bed.

I'm never terribly happy in other people's homes if they don't observe the same care. And absolutely hate it on TV shows or in films when people arrive home late at night and go straight to sit on their beds to take off their shoes. Yuck!

Nohugstoday25 · 10/06/2021 17:31

Never before until we had a outbreak of bed bugs which I never knew was so rife and picked up public transport / hotels etc

Everyone out for piece of clothing goes of my children as soon as they are in the door and in the tumble dryer on heat now 🤣

It cost thousands of pound to get rid !

InTheNameOfAllThatIsHonest · 10/06/2021 17:33

I would never sit on our bed with outdoor clothes on - and don't let my OH do that either. Even just sitting in them in your car brings in all kind of stuff picked up outside (restaurants, waiting rooms, public transport, etc).

I also don't let my duvet or pillows touch the floor when they are bare of a cover/cases when I'm changing the bedding, for the same reason.

Timetopoeet · 10/06/2021 17:36

Bed bugs apart, it's a bloody miracle evolution ever got us this far. Honestly think as to how humans have survived and evolved over thousands of years and yet some of you won't sit on a bed in clothes you drive home in or sat on a bus in? I despair sometimes and think we'll end up like those people in WALL-E that had to be carted around in those flying seats. Pathetic really.

User1110 · 10/06/2021 17:36

I couldn’t do it. But I’ve generally always changed clothing when I’m home, take off my shoes right away etc.

Same with handbags - my friends works in medicine. She was telling me there are literally millions of faeces droplets on your handbag. So I will never, ever put anything from outside - including my clothes - on/in my bed.

1forAll74 · 10/06/2021 17:37

I would never think about such things like this.

What exactly do you think is going to happen to you? See above post

HangingOver · 10/06/2021 17:39

When I get home, even if I've just been shopping, I have a shower and put all new clothes on. I just feel better doing that

I'm sorry but that's bonkers.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 10/06/2021 17:55

I’ve seen some absolute sights on the train including someone pissing themselves on a seat when drunk and another wiping bogies on a seat and pole when they didn’t realise the carriage was empty.

If you want to get bed bugs crack on.

It's disgusting. Do you wash your hands after going to the toilet? Why?
BigWoollyJumpers · 10/06/2021 17:57

Never thought about it really.

Handbags on the other hand...... are apparently the filthiest things we possess, and most people regularly put them on tables or counter tops without a second thought.

Bloody hell......

As pp's have stated, when my cat sits and sleeps on my bed he brings in mud, pooh grindles, and many and various insects, fleas, ticks etc etc.

I don't worry one bit.

adrianmolesmole · 10/06/2021 18:06

I sit on the bed wearing outside clothes but its usually temporary as I always change straight into pjs when I come in. I would never sit inside the bed with outside clothes on - i had to tell DP not to do that when we first started dating, it had never occurred to him!

JackieTheFart · 10/06/2021 18:06

It’s not something I have ever considered.

SilverGoblin · 10/06/2021 18:07

Beds are often a naked ass zone.

Would you sit on public transport, for an instance, completely naked?

I think this might be where it comes from for some people.

I personally don't want grime where I sleep and get naked.

lljkk · 10/06/2021 18:12

I sleep in my day clothes so not one to talk...

If that keeps people out of my house, Fantastic.

Lulu1919 · 10/06/2021 18:13

We would never sit in a bed in 'outside ' clothes
My daughter doesn't even like anyone sitting her bed apart from her and her partner !!!
Actually we don't wear clothes we've worn outside the house in the house....we change as soon as we come home from work or from been out and about !!
No shoes in our house either.

DappledThings · 10/06/2021 18:16

I wouldn't think twice about it. And if I was having a daytime nap I'd just get into bed in whatever I was already wearing as well.

picklemewalnuts · 10/06/2021 18:18

@ClaudiaWankleman dirt. I can smell dirt. I'm not a germophobe, I'm relatively slack- very analytical, extremely careful about some things but 'a peck of dirt before you die' about most.

DH's coat stinks from going on the trams. It doesn't smell of him, or BO, it smells of dirty tram. I wouldn't like my bed to smell like that.

BraxtonChic · 10/06/2021 18:22

I wouldn't get under the covers for sure, possibly would sit on the end of the bed on the duvet though.

But handbags, suitcases, shoes or pets NEVER go on a bed I'm planning to sleep in.

For me it's to do with a bed being somewhere I put my face - and I'm a "tuck the duvet under my chin" person. A sofa wouldn't be an issue because face doesn't usually touch it.

iGetPipAndWork · 10/06/2021 19:08

I take of my clothes in the porch because they will contaminate my house. ...

^not really. I do not sit on my bed in outdoor clothes I chnage into lounge wear.
