Aibu to ask if it is unhygienic to sit on the bed wearing outdoor clothes

Chatting to DD who in passing said she won’t sit on her bed wearing clothes she has been outside in, particularly if she’s used public transport. Is this a thing? Am I a bit grubby for not giving it a second thought? I wouldn’t lie on the bed wearing my shoes but other than that don’t give it a second thought.

@osbertthesyrianhamster I'm 100% with you on this!

MayIDestroyYou · 10/06/2021 19:24

The thought of a suitcase on a bed at the end of a journey is just beyond disgusting.

WildBluebell · 10/06/2021 19:38

I would never sit on the bed in outdoor clothes. It's just gross.

HoboSexualOnslow · 10/06/2021 19:42

Just had a nap under the duvet in my outdoor clothes.....can't say it's ever bothered me!

fruitbrewhaha · 10/06/2021 19:43

I let my dog on the bed.

I'll just leave that there.

It really isn't. It might be a little beyond what you think is acceptable. The hyperbole is hilarious.
TheNestedIf · 10/06/2021 20:32

I agree with the DD. I've seen far too many disgusting things on public transport, cafes, the office, etc to have touched surfaces in any of those places and then get on my nice, clean bed. Likewise, bags and shoes stay on the doormat.

Besides anything, I like to shower when I get home and there's no point in getting back into outdoor clothes if you're not going outdoors again, in my view.

AlwaysLatte · 10/06/2021 20:38

If I've been on public transport I do shower and change when I get home anyway, so sitting on the bed in those clothes wouldn't happen. But if I d been to the shops in my car I don't. I do feel particularly grubby going on trains but that's very rare, since I've only ever used trains for recreational purposes and there hasn't been much of that recently, obviously!

lazylinguist · 10/06/2021 20:39

It wouldn't even occur to me to be bothered by this. Why the bed specifically? It makes no sense at all tbh. Why is it not unhygienic to let you or your clothes touch the sofa etc after you've been outside? Even if you then get changed before sitting on the bed, the clean clothes you put on will touch your body, your hair etc which have been outside. Your clean clothes might then touch the sofa you sat on in the clothes you'd been out in. Etc etc etc. It's utter nonsense!

ohnana · 10/06/2021 20:43

I would do the same as your daughter - generally change into “inside clothes” when I get home. But we also don’t wear shoes around the house. Off at the front door. I do think shoes inside is particularly unhygienic, but I’m from an Asian background where this would be the norm.

In fact, outside of Asia the no shoes inside would be the norm for Scandinavian countries, most European, most Middle East and some African countries. Sometimes I get the ick seeing people wearing their shoes in the house on tv shows 🙈

Wow. It's just a bag. On a piece of furniture. It must be very difficult to function normally in fay-to-day life with these odd, excessive, totally unnecessary hygiene rules.

DirectionsForUse · 10/06/2021 20:44

It's never occured to me not to. I often sit on the bed to fiddle with my phone read. If it's chilly I'll get under the duvet. Another time MN shows me up to be minging.

ohnana · 10/06/2021 20:45

@BigWoollyJumpers

Never thought about it really.

Handbags on the other hand...... are apparently the filthiest things we possess, and most people regularly put them on tables or counter tops without a second thought.

Oh yes handbags too, always on the floor at home.

Same with packages and parcels that arrive - never on the countertops or table!

lazylinguist · 10/06/2021 20:47

It's never occured to me not to.

Exactly. It's very sad that you and I have clearly died from some horrific poor-hygiene-related disease, DirectionsForUse. Oh hang on... I appear to be perfectly healthy. How about you?

It’s actually quite simple to function normally in day to day life - you just don’t put it on the bed?!

Especially if the case has wheels on it and has been on the footpath, bathroom floors, everywhere that everyone else’s shoes have walked through. Don’t see why you’d want to sleep on that!

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 10/06/2021 20:52

The bed bug thing though...

lazylinguist · 10/06/2021 20:53

Well obviously it's simple to function without doing that one specific thing (it would be for me, since I haven't used a suitcase in about 3 years). But people who are paranoid about dirt, germs and hygiene don't tend to only apply that to one specific item on one specific surface.

sbhydrogen · 10/06/2021 20:55

I will sit at the end of the bed in clothes that I've worn outdoors, but wouldn't sit near the top end.

There’s probably a difference between being aware and conscious of what you’re doing, rather than paranoid. I personally wouldn’t consider myself to be paranoid but rather just healthy habits/practices that tbh I don’t give much thought to as it’s just normal. Maybe a cultural and family element to it though as just used to it!

Totally with you on this one. Bags don't get put on my dining room table.
grasstreeleaf · 10/06/2021 21:00

Erm what about your sofa? Bed clothes are changed regularly. Many sofas do not have loose covers...

What about car seats? Bus seats? Train seats? Sitting on the ground?

Wash your hands before you eat, don't start worrying about outdoor clothes touching soft furnishings....

I'm absolutely not a clean freak, believe me. But I hate the idea of outdoors clothes anywhere on my bed.
grasstreeleaf · 10/06/2021 21:03

@AntiHop, guess you must hate even the thought of camping then!Grin

Any chance your daughter has TikTok? (Probably more unlikely for her not to have it) but there are lots of “outside clothes on bed” funny videos there so it could have planted the seed recently!
Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 10/06/2021 21:12

I always feel a bit weird about it
