How many calories do you eat?

How many calories a day do you eat?

How old are you and what is your height and weight?

I'm 25 with a BMI of 37 at 15st 7. I was consuming at a guess 3000+ a day.
Currently dieting with calorie counting and reducing intake.

I'm having around 1000 calories a day now but really, I'm wondering, once I get to a weight I'm happy with, how many calories I should then be having to maintain.

So it would be interesting to hear how many calories people have daily.

I think I need about 1500-1800 calories to maintain. I’m mid thirties and have a bmi of 23. I’d like to be a little bit lighter but I like food too much.

SomewhereInbetween1 · 08/06/2021 20:05

1,000 is not enough, you'll be damaging your metabolism which will make weight loss harder.

I like food too! Especially the bad kind. Very unfortunate. 1800 seems reasonable and achievable potentially.

No idea. I'm on the body coach app so just follow Joe Wick's yummy recipes, all tailored to my measurements so I don't need to know Grin

sadly if I eat more that 1700 I gain weight...

Oh, is that true? I didn't realise. We are thinking about TTC so I wanted to shift at least a stone first and thought 1000kcal would get me started fast just for the first month, before I up the amount of calories for a slower and maintainable weight loss.

Since receiving Gousto boxes I've realised my portions were way too big, lord knows how many calories I was consuming before, way over the recommended 2000 I'm sure. We don't have a full week of meals from them so I'm working on keeping my dinner portions to a similar size.

Gousto meals tend to be around 500-600 calories each I've found (or the ones we order happen to be anyway).

Oh! 1700 doesn't sound a lot.

Have a look at James Smith, do your calculation and be consistent. 1000 is far far too low

Yes, now I'm counting calories and have started weighing things out, I think "fuck, that looks tiny! I'd have had 10000 times more than that if I hadn't weighed it." For example, I was weighing out 10g of lighter cheddar earlier and it was barely any! I'd have probably have had 150g before and thought nothing of it.

I'm 27, 5'7 and 10st and probably eat around 2000 a day on average. Slightly less on weekdays, slightly more on weekends

FizzyPink · 08/06/2021 20:12

I’m 29, 5”5 and weigh 125lbs so BMI of 21. When I want to lose a few pounds I eat 1350 but to maintain anything up to 1800.
I tend to eat meals that are under 400 calories and then have the rest for snacks or a treat. I find the Pinch of Nom books really good for tasty low calorie meals. It’s also amazing how many calories you can cut out just from switching to lower calorie alternatives for things like cooking oil, butter, bread etc

iduno · 08/06/2021 20:12

I'm 35, 5ft1 and 8 stone. I reckon I eat on average about 1300-1400 calories. Obviously some days more (a lot more if I have a takeaway or go out for lunch/dinner) and some days maybe less if I've skipped a few meals.

I generally have breakfast, snacks then dinner or brunch/lunch and dinner. I'm a bad snacker, I often don't eat a big dinner.

Think it's supposed to be about 2000 calories for women and 2500 for men.

I was trying for 800kcals a day at first but after just a day I realised it wasn't maintainable so have upped it to 1000. Although, today so far I've only had 724kcals and I've had dinner already. Will have something else in a bit though.

2400 for maintenance

2000 for weight loss

fellrunner85 · 08/06/2021 20:14

I'm 35, 5ft 6 and 9st ish. I don't calorie count but I imagine I eat around 2,000 calories a day.

But I run fuckloads of miles and burn it off. When I didn't run, I was fat despite eating less than I do now.

Springchickpea · 08/06/2021 20:16

You could try something like 5:2 where you do 800 kcal for two days a week. But I would try and keep the other days around the 1500 mark. You don’t want to starve yourself.

Iceybirb · 08/06/2021 20:16

I'm 9st 12, late 30s, 5ft 3 and have to stay under 1200 to lose at all. My BMR is 1412 and anything over that I gain.

I do an hour of treadmill 4x a week.

Late 30s are slightly depressing, I used to live on snakebites, donner meat and the occasional innocent smoothie and weighed 8.5. That's what getting older does to you apparently Grin

brogo · 08/06/2021 20:19

I'm 34, 5 feet 4 and weigh 67kg . I would like to weigh about 60!
I have about 1600 calories a day.

GiveTheGirlAGun · 08/06/2021 20:21

Have you got a garmin watch or equiv? It tells you in the app an approximation of your total calories burned. If you make sure you've a clear 500 kcal defecit you'll lose weight. There's a few online calculators that'll show you your metabolic rate too.
They say 2000kcals for women, but ime that is way too high if you're sedentary or moderately active.

Zealois · 08/06/2021 20:23

Currently steadily losing on 1800, with my only exercise being getting my 10k steps every day. I'm 5 foot 6.

blaisealex · 08/06/2021 20:24

Out of my 1000kcals a day, I reserve 200 kcals for drinks which leaves me 800 for food and I try and save 200 for a snack/treat. So, at the moment, I'm having 100 kcals at Lunch time and then 400-500 on dinner.

I'm 40, 5'10", BMI around 19, I eat around 1900 cals per day, which I worked out when I was loosing weight last year was my maintenance amount, and I now do 2 20-24hr fasts per week and don't worry on the other days.

I'd recommend reading either or both of 'Eat Stop Eat' by Brad Pilon and 'The Diet Myth' by Tim Spector. In a nutshell - you won't damage your metabolism by limiting your calories to 1000 a day but it's unlikely to be long term sustainable. You will need to find something that works for you long term in order to maintain a lower weight.

Yeah, I don't think I'd maintain on 2000kcals once down to a healthy weight as I'm not very active. I work ten hours a week in a physical job but I wouldn't say it's massively intensive or demanding. Though, i would like to know how many calories I burn at work. Aside from that, besides going in and out of the garden and around the house, that's pretty much it in terms of activity.

The idea that eating under 1000 calories ruins your metabolism has been debunked. However, it is really difficult to get adequate nutrition if you drop under 1200 calories, so should only be done if you are under the supervision of a doctor. For example, clinics to reverse type 2 diabetes in obese people will work with them to drastically cut calories for a short period of time to lose weight rapidly, but they tend to keep food diaries which are checked by HCPs to ensure the patient is getting enough vitamins, minerals, fibre etc.

Unless advised by a doctor, aim to average at least 1200 calories per day. Good luck with your weight loss!
