Am i asking for too much?

Currently in the process of selling my sofas, less than 12 months old and in pretty much immaculate condition. Cost over £3000 when bought!
Listed on a few selling sites and within 48 hrs had people asking why i’m selling for so expensive as they are second hand! They literally look brand new! Apparently i shouldn’t list as ‘like new’ as ive had them in my house!
How much would you be willing to pay for second hand sofas? 4seater, 3 seater and footstool?

OP posts:
SwimBaby · 06/06/2021 21:46

They are too expensive, what’s your plan OP?

Lucked · 06/06/2021 21:50

I would say if you listed them the day they arrived you might get 50%. Otherwise anything over a grand and you are on a hiding to nothing.

FlowerArranger · 06/06/2021 21:53

Is it just the footstool that is the problem? Why not just get rid of this, or put it in the corner space between the 2 sofas and use it as a lamp table?

pictish · 06/06/2021 21:53

I was going to say much the same. If someone can afford £ 2200 for sofas they will buy new. No one in the market for a a second hand sofa has that amount of money to spend.

L123A · 06/06/2021 21:53

See their clearance prices - footstool is £320 to £99 and that’s likely brand new

Am i asking for too much?
championthewonderhorse70 · 06/06/2021 21:55

Can't you ditch one of the sofas and get a smaller one to for your space better?

cansu · 06/06/2021 21:56

I think you are being completely unrealistic. People who have that sort of money to spend will not buy them second hand. They will buy exactly what they want, brand new. If you are buying second hand furniture it is to get something reduced as you can't afford to buy new.

Snog · 06/06/2021 21:58

I would expect to pay £300.

Bumzoo · 06/06/2021 21:59

You're lucky to give stuff away around here sometimes. Sofas are a bugger to shift.

Mollymarvelous · 06/06/2021 22:05

Purchased the exact sofa I wanted second hand for £300 . Still in shops for £1500. Sofas do not hold resale value becuase someone else has lounged all over it . £2000 is unheard of ! Beds also the same eve if they’ve been protected , expensive beds don’t hold any value .

tolerable · 06/06/2021 22:07

£1500. if bought to furnish not to use. if used £750 .as long as no pets/smoking

JaceLancs · 06/06/2021 22:07

£500-£600 max

Calmdown14 · 06/06/2021 22:07

If they break tomorrow, turn out to have unseen faults, your buyers have zero comeback.
You also don't offer interest free credit.
Unless it's rare/collectible, people aren't willing to spend a lot second hand because you are always taking a chance

Oly4 · 06/06/2021 22:07

If I wanted to pay £2K I’d buy new, sorry. I wouldn’t pay more than £400-£500 for sofas if secondhand

Wegobshite · 06/06/2021 22:09

I had a corner sofa with recliners at both ends - full leather - multi usb hubs on each side paid £4000 2 years ago

Sold it for £800 to a friend a few months ago as we bought a new one that was bigger. Exactly the same style but with extra seating in the middle
Mine still had 3 years of the 5 year warranty left so I transferred that to my friend and it’s a current model so my friend could see she was getting an absolute bargain . Plus she like the Sofa whenever she visited us 😂
We don’t have any kids -only a small dog so no kids stains or scuff marks it really was as new

Nohomemadecandles · 06/06/2021 22:11

You're also assuming someone prepared to buy second hand has 2k lying around in cash. Most sofa shops offer interest free credit!

Thighdentitycrisis · 06/06/2021 22:11

I understood that at least 2/3 of the original value is lost once the item is owned by one owner

So absolute max you would get is 1k - most people are already saying they wouldn’t pay that

Hellodarknessmyoldpal · 06/06/2021 22:22

@BlueDucky

The moment someone farts on one it looses at least 50% of its value.
😂🤢
Looubylou · 07/06/2021 07:58

Make sure you pick something you absolutely love and in a colour where you can change everything in the room, to hopefully get your moneys worth yourself, next time you buy.

stackemhigh · 07/06/2021 08:06

I bought an ex-display corner sofa from SCS with a footstool for £700, no way would I pay more than £100 for a second hand.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/06/2021 08:09

Sadly OP, it sounds like you've made an expensive mistake. For it to be worth paying over £3k for sofas, they'd have to be absolutely perfect and you'd have to expect to keep them for a really long time like 10-20 years.

If neither of the above apply, it's simply not worth spending that amount of money.

That £99 footstool in the Sofalogy clearance section looks like a bit of a bargain though. I'm looking for a nice buffet that can be used mainly as a cat bed, but look nice in my living room, that fits the bill and is cheaper than a lot of dedicated pet furniture. They'd still ignore it in favour of a tatty cardboard box though.

BelleBlueBell · 07/06/2021 08:16

Research is key when selling anything second hand. Remove any thoughts of what you think it's worth and see what similar items have actually sold for

It doesnt sound like you are hard up but you must appreciate that millions of other people are

Marauder94 · 07/06/2021 08:18

We sold our 2 year old leather recliner 8 seat corner sofa for £350...

Cost over £2500 new

Pottedpalm · 07/06/2021 08:18

We have two Duresta big Trafalgar sofas, over £3000 each when purchased. When we moved I thought of selling as we were changing the colour scheme, but when I realised the price I could sell them for I decided to have them reupholstered. Found an excellent reupholsterer and we are very pleased with the results. It’s only worth doing with top quality furniture though.

PacifyLulu · 07/06/2021 08:19

@mum2b2017

shocking isn’t it! i dont think people appreciate the cost we pay for the quality
That’s quite a patronising comment. I think people do appreciate that but as pp have said, second hand sofas don’t hold their value and if people can afford that they’d rather have new.
