Am i asking for too much?

Currently in the process of selling my sofas, less than 12 months old and in pretty much immaculate condition. Cost over £3000 when bought!
Listed on a few selling sites and within 48 hrs had people asking why i’m selling for so expensive as they are second hand! They literally look brand new! Apparently i shouldn’t list as ‘like new’ as ive had them in my house!
How much would you be willing to pay for second hand sofas? 4seater, 3 seater and footstool?

Yeah that's never gonna happen. If you've got that money why wouldn't you go buy new? I never buy second hand but if I did I think the whole idea is that you'd be getting a bargain, not bailing somebody out because they'd changed their mind after a year.

SwimBaby · 06/06/2021 21:24

I think they do but they want to choose their own sofas if they are paying 75% full price.

ProudPolyGradSingleMum · 06/06/2021 21:24

I bought two brand new looking leather sofas for £200 three years ago.

I’m ready to change them but they’re such damned good quality I don’t want to get rid 😂😂😂

mum2b2017 · 06/06/2021 21:24

we never use the footstool, it’s more for decoration. it’s not even close enough to the sofas to put our feet on!

If you pay for a new sofa you get delivery, safety in purchasing it and bring able to return it if faulty etc. No hidden surprises.

Nohomemadecandles · 06/06/2021 21:26

If I was going to buy a second hand sofa it would be because I was skint. If I could afford that much, I'd buy a new one!

PhannyPharts · 06/06/2021 21:26

I struggled to give my two laura Ashley sofas away. There are loads of second hand sofas on marketplace. As a PP said. It's expensive and inconvenient to pick them up from a private seller. I was just glad I didn't have to pay the council to take them away in the end.

mum2b2017 · 06/06/2021 21:29

crazy isn’t it! i haven’t got much hope for if i decide to sell the next one we have ordered then!

mum2b2017 · 06/06/2021 21:31

@HandfulofDust

Definitely too high op. I wouldn't pay that even if you'd literally changed your mind the first day you got them and never sat on them let alone after having been in your house for so long (even if they're in excellent condition).
funny you say that as someone else has the same sofas listed on the same popular bidding site and they are asking for every penny back that they paid as apparently they have been sat under a sheet for 6 months unused and unneeded! at least i was offering a discount, or so i thought

It’s no different than selling lots of things second hand. Check out how low some wedding and prom dresses are on Facebook marketplace.

PattyPan · 06/06/2021 21:33

I’d probably pay no more than £300 for a 3 piece suite second hand. My sofa (2 seater) came from IKEA and I think it was about £250 new so over a grand seems ridiculous!

i can appreciate that! i did not know that the guarantee would not be transferred to new person should be sell or give away

We got our old second-hand sofa for free off a friend Grin

Our current one cost £400 brand new - it seats three, has storage and converts to a double bed. There is no way I would pay anything close to what you're asking for second-hand!

hellywelly3 · 06/06/2021 21:34

I always think second hand goods should never be more than a 1/3 of the original price. With second hand you have no guarantee if something is wrong with them. They could be broken or have an odour etc.

eternalopt · 06/06/2021 21:35

Worth bearing in mind that sofology themselves give bigger discounts than you in their own clearance section!

Anyone else wanting to see the sofas

claracluck1978 · 06/06/2021 21:35

I'm an auctioneer and my saleroom gets so many calls each month from people wanting to sell their lounge suites. OP you are not alone I'm thinking they should hold their value more. Sadly, though, they don't. My own sofas were pre-owned and I've never actually bought new sofas because there are so many second hand bargains out there.

BlueDucky · 06/06/2021 21:35

£500 max

And like new means they are in perfect condition. No hint of wear or tear. No wear to the cushions. Basically no one has sat on them.

Dinosauraddict · 06/06/2021 21:37

I'd expect £300-£400 I'm afraid...

I think OP, anyone who could pay what you’re asking for a second hand sofa, would just buy it new for a few hundred more.

In fact, I dare say people who have that much to spend, would not be browsing Marketplace.

BlueDucky · 06/06/2021 21:41

The moment someone farts on one it looses at least 50% of its value.

Travis1 · 06/06/2021 21:41

I think if someone has £2K to sink into sofas they won’t be looking for second hand and if they don’t buy want something in that price range they’ll be looking for finance.

Most people on marketplace are looking for something cheap & cheerful so I definitely wouldn’t pay more than about £5-600

mum2b2017 · 06/06/2021 21:44

they are from Sofology, the Midas range. Ive them listed on ebay and gumtree and on both sites ive been told they are too expensive by buyers!
