If you have a dog that jumps and you have visitors

Please
Please
Stop them from bloody jumping up at your guests. If a child was doing it, presumably you would.

But so many give dogs free passes.

Beautiful skirt I wore.... dirty and scratched before I’d even made it through to the kitchen!

Or.. you know.. just don’t visit? I’m sure they prefer their dog to you.

cupsofcoffee · 06/06/2021 17:13

I agree people shouldn't let their dogs jump up, BUT if I knew someone had dogs, I wouldn't turn up wearing a beautiful skirt. Even if the dog doesn't jump, the hair gets everywhere!

Well clearly their dog is more important than you, a human being. I wouldn't bother going any more if they can't be arsed to control their dog around you. Imagine you had a pet tarantula, rat, snake etc, and let it crawl around on your visitors ... funny how that would NOT be acceptable.

I didn’t know there was a dog there!

Hmm, yes but also dogs can get randomly excitable. I wouldnt wear my best stuff going to a house with dogs in!

GooodMythicalMorning · 06/06/2021 17:21

xpost, not much you can do then!

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 06/06/2021 17:22

My dog isn’t jumpy but he is big and will rub against you and probably slobber on you, so if we have visitors who haven’t met him, don’t like him or are wearing smart clothes, I put him in the other room.

phoenixrosehere · 06/06/2021 17:23

I’ve been there OP. We were invited to a party on a rooftop and I didn’t know that they had a dog. I sat down and the dog jumped in my lap. I gently pushed him off and he did it again. I stood up and his nails had scratched thin white lines into the fabric of my dress. I played it off as everyone thought how cute the dog’s actions was and moved to lean against the rooftop edge but inside I was gutted about my dress. Still have yet to find one like it. I still have it in hopes I can find one similar or at least the fabric.

AlCalavicci · 06/06/2021 17:23

I really like dogs but this would still get on my nerves

Wombats12 · 06/06/2021 17:29

I have dogs & I fail at this.

Mostly don't have visitors & they quieten down fairly quickly. However, some visitors wind them up, despite me telling them not to & the dogs love visitors, so it can be excruciating.

I have taken to locking them up outside but can't with the new puppy. Or when it's too hot, no real workable alternatives.

They do listen to commands but no one actually uses them (despite it being suggested they say down, etc) , so the dogs don't behave as well as they should...

Sometimesfraught82 · 06/06/2021 17:32

It just went on and on. Jumping and everyone. Over and over.

I do like dogs but I just thought... bloody hell!

CharlotteRose90 · 06/06/2021 17:37

Yep fully agree. I have a dog that either barks or tries to jump up. He immediately gets pushed down and told no. The same as if we have food and invite friends round he gets locked in another room or in the garden.

SmellyBottomHead · 06/06/2021 17:38

I have dogs. People should put the bloody effort in and train them
Nothing more annoying than a 'friendly' wet dog or a dog that jumps up

Castlepeak · 06/06/2021 17:41

I hate that. I go to a new house and I don’t know if they have dogs. I have a contact allergy. I just need to not touch them and I’m ok. Pet them once and my hand is on fire. Greeted at the door by a dog jumping up on me or rubbing against my legs.

PhannyPharts · 06/06/2021 17:50

Is this someone you didn't know very well or a formal sort of visit OP? I know the pet status of all my friends. I tend not to wear nice clothes anyway though because I've dogs myself. If a guest was phobic I would put my dogs in another room but I can't guarantee anyone who passes my threshold will leave without dog hair on their person.

PurpleDaisies · 06/06/2021 17:51

Don’t you know he was just being friendly? Wink

This pisses me off too.

Chailatteplease · 06/06/2021 17:53

YANBU people don’t train dogs anymore. My last dog trainer told me a dog jumping at a person is classed as assault in the eyes of law.

speakout · 06/06/2021 17:56

I feel you OP.

I would regularly visit my DDs' best friend's home for pick ups.
The dog would jump up and throw itself on me in excitement.
The owner would laugh it off, saying how much the dog loves visitors. THe dog had long claws, I would leave the house covered in scratches and slobber.

WallaceinAnderland · 06/06/2021 17:58

I hate the fact that not wanting dog hair, paw scratches, mud or slobber on you is seen as anti-social.

No, keep your pet away from me.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 06/06/2021 18:01

Yes, totally agree. Annoying and people should train their dogs properly.

AmberRoseGold · 06/06/2021 18:02

Lean into the dog which will put it off jumping. Or raise your knee sharply if they are the kind of owners who wouldn’t mind (we don’t mind).
Lock our dog away or keep her on lead until she has calmed down. She doesn’t jump anymore but can be annoying in other ways.

MisgenderedSwan · 06/06/2021 18:12

I like dogs and have a huge one. I don't like dogs who jump up though! Take it into your own hands if people can't/won't control their pets. Hands down low and firmly/loudly say 'off'. If they persist in jumping, raise your knee (obviously not swinging a kick, just lift your leg). It's harder for them to jump against and less rewarding for them. Hand palm down and say 'off' again.

If it continues, ask the owner to put it outside. If they won't, leave!

MachiaNelly · 06/06/2021 18:19

I would never visit a house with a dog because of this. They always promise to keep it in another room but in practise that rarely happens. It's just paying lip service. I don't like dogs anyway so just best not to go. I do find that people can be unfriendly if I don't like their dog. Not much I can do about that.

Flowerlane · 06/06/2021 18:22

Dog owner here and my dog does not jump at all. All puppies should be taught this from the very start. My dog may come over and have a smell of the legs and to see if she will get a pat on the head. She then retreats to her bed for a snooze.
