To enjoy cheap chocolate?

Just had a Cadbury Dairy Milk Fruit & Nut chocolate bar 🍫- it was delicious!
I actually much prefer this cheap type of chocolate from the supermarket to ‘posh’ chocolate like Godiva, Leonidas etc.

AIBU for preferring the cheap chocolate and does it mean I have a horrible and cheap taste in chocolate?

Nope I still love Cadburys! To some it's an 'oily mess' Hmm but to me it tastes like chocolate and is nice. I can't eat 'fancy' choc like hotel Chocolat it just doesn't tastes very nice to me

kowari · 06/06/2021 13:33

I don't need expensive chocolate but it must be very high cocoa content, 85% minimum. Happy with a Tesco £1 bar or Aldi, and love Lidl 95%. So I'd choose cheap 85% over posh milk chocolate anyway!

WellLarDeDar · 06/06/2021 13:33

Can't believe people are calling Cadburys cheap. I thought you were going to say a 30p own bar or something. Cadbury's is inexpensive but I wouldnt call it 'cheap'.

kowari · 06/06/2021 13:34

*anyday

Thesearmsofmine · 06/06/2021 13:37

YANBU unless you also like Kinnerton chocolate Envy

ElderMillennial · 06/06/2021 13:39

Yabu for calling Cadbury’s cheap

Agree

There are cheaper chocolates than Cadbury's eg own brand chocolates

KisstheTeapot14 · 06/06/2021 13:40

Galaxy as preference, not had cadbury's for a while. I sense an experimental chocolate purchase coming on.

Will publish results when data has been collected.

musthavebeenlove · 06/06/2021 13:41

I thought Cadbury was cheap for MN standards 🤷🏼‍♀️ Where everyone wears Boden and shops at Waitrose 😂

Mackies chocolate is really nice. I've bought it in lidl, the one in the blue wrapper.

I loved Cadbury's chocolate. I didn't think anything could beat it. Then I had a Cadbury's Twirl. It was awful and certainly not what I remembered it to be like.

Then I compared the ingredients between a Cadbury's Twirl and a Cadbury's Dairy Milk bar. There is a difference. Since then I've had dairy milk and it is just as I remember it. Lovely.
It seems to me that the bars that say Dairy Milk are much nicer than the bars you can buy, like twirl.

halcyondays · 06/06/2021 13:56

Tesco own brand chocolate is much nicer, no palm oil, and £1 for a 200g bar. They do a fruit and nut.

BlueTriskel · 06/06/2021 14:02

I will admit to preferring the occasional Fry’s Turkish Delight or Crunchie to beautiful, expensive, high bean content chocolate, though L’Artisan du chocolat’s tobacco chocolates, complete with slight buzz, are gorgeous.

TopTabby · 06/06/2021 14:05

Cadburys Giant Buttons are the best! Usually available somewhere for £1. I can't stand pricier chocolate, I had a selection pack of Green & Black's as a present recently & I couldn't believe how horrible it was!
No thankyou to gifts from Hotel Chocolat etc, I'm a proper pleb when it comes to chocolate & proud. Grin

wishihadagoodone · 06/06/2021 14:06
@wishihadagoodone you can still get them!
WHERE?!

Nonmaquillee · 06/06/2021 14:07

Oooh I love a KitKat chunky

BikeRunSki · 06/06/2021 14:10

My favourite chocolate is the french supermarket Super U own brand. It might just be a holiday thing...

BikeRunSki · 06/06/2021 14:12

@wishihadagoodone

When you say cheap chocolate, I automatically think of those little coloured foil cups that were filled with chocolate.

God I loved those!!!!

They sell these in our newsagents
MrsMoastyToasty · 06/06/2021 14:14

Cadburys chocolate hasn't tasted the same since they stopped production in Keynsham (my home town) and moved it elsewhere after Kraft bought the brand.
They didn't even mothball the site. They sold it for housing and my local GP surgery and the Head office of Pukka Teas occupy one of the buildings.
I can remember standing outside my door and if the wind was from the north you could smell chocolate on the air...

wobblyweasel · 06/06/2021 14:16

I love a Cadbury's fruit and nut bar! I love the really cheap chocolate Swiss rolls, especially when they're a day old! Lidl chocolate is lovely! However my DS works for hotel chocolat- and I especially love the freebies I get!

Cadent · 06/06/2021 14:17

I think Godiva etc is wasted on me as I like the cheap stuff too.

However, I did enjoy Tony’s Chocolonely which is 100% slave free.

Cadbury’s isn’t slave free.

Ohh that’s like living near Mr Wonka’s chocolate factory ! Fabulous!

I used to live close to a beer brewery as a child, that smell was absolutely awful and now I also want to live near a chocolate factory.

I used to love chocolate - all chocolate.

Now there appears to be a simple choice between nasty, slimy crap full of palm oil or awful 'posh' bitter tasting dark stuff.

Most of the cheap nasty stuff is now owned by Kraft or Nestle and are awful compared to what they used to be (Cadbury's, Fry's, Rowntrees - all the decent brands).

The other stuff like Fair Trade 70% Dark Chocolate is so bitter its horrible and tastes like cooking chocolate used to.

If anybody can recommend something that's still actually as it was originally made and not full of cheap oil I'd be grateful.

musthavebeenlove · 06/06/2021 14:24

Have you tried Tony’s @MadMadMadamMim?

I absolutely love it, I can’t buy it here otherwise I wouldn’t buy Cadbury. I love Côte d’Or too.

It's just personal taste. I find dairy milk too sweet. I like all plain chocolate cheap or otherwise. I was brought up loving Thorntons but a lot of people find that sickly. I don't think I've had really expensive stuff that I've been aware of. American chocolate is vile. Bit like chocolate and cakes in the Med - look nice but taste awful.

BelleBlueBell · 06/06/2021 14:25

Surely which chocolate you prefer is down to your taste buds, how can it be any kind of indicator of superior-ness?

I can't eat darn chocolate because I don't like the taste, no amount of being told it's better for you or in some way posh is going to change that

Are there people who have successfully found way to enjoy a food that their taste buds don't like?

Life's too short to eat stuff that makes you pull a face Grin

OP - eat whatever the hell you enjoy, why would anyone be interested in what type of chocolate someone else likes Confused

musthavebeenlove · 06/06/2021 14:25

It’s a bit of a tongue in cheek thread @BelleBlueBell 😊
