To be worried about my 4 year olds temperature?

OneMamaAndHerGirl · 06/06/2021 07:04

Posting for traffic.

My 4 year old woke up last Saturday morning with a temp of 39.3 and vomited 5 times. She also developed a very chesty cough and snotty nose, called 111 and they made her an appointment with GP out of hours. He couldn’t see if there was any infection but prescribed her antibiotics anyway just incase. When we left there she was back to her normal self begging to go to the zoo (we didn’t go). So I waited until Monday to give her the antibiotics as her temperature didn’t return and I wanted a second opinion from her own GP. Monday morning her temperature returned so I spoke with the GP (phone consultation) and she said it was sensible to let her fight whatever this was without antibiotics as she was eating, drinking and has full energy. I was happy with that decision. She was fine all week doing all her activities, she did have a chesty cough and snotty nose still. But so did most of the other kids we saw out so thought nothing of it.
However, this morning at 5.30 she woke up and vomited once and had a temp of 39.9. I’m sick to my stomach with worry that something is seriously wrong with her. She has another appointment at 9am to be seen by a GP. I suffered with terrible health anxiety in the past regarding my daughter I almost had a breakdown and I’ve been A LOT better lately but this has triggered it. In my mind I’m trying to tell myself that it’s just the infection she never fought off and now needs antibiotics. Could this be possible? Or does anyone have similar experiences? She was absolutely fine yesterday putting on dance shows for us, eating like a horse and swimming in the paddling pool!
Please be kind, I feel riddled with anxiety.

Can I also add her temperature after calpol is not going below 39.1

Has she had a covid test if you're in the UK? But otherwise, it just sounds like a bug - sure the dr will be able to reassure you today

Have you given Ibuprofen as well ?
KingdomScrolls · 06/06/2021 07:46

So the doctor gave her antibiotics but you didn't give them to her and whatever she had hasn't gone away... Surely give her the treatment prescribed?!

Stormwhale · 06/06/2021 07:47

If her temp is not going down with calpol she absolutely needs to be seen urgently.

User0ne · 06/06/2021 07:54

Tbh I think you're over reacting.

If she's mostly fine in herself then it's very unlikely to be something serious and you're catastrophising.

I'd keep an eye on her and see if she vomits again today and whether her temperature comes down a bit by mid-day.

OneMamaAndHerGirl · 06/06/2021 08:01

Thanks for replies. She doesn’t have covid. I’m sure I’ve just seen white spots on her tonsils also. She has an appointment at 9am

Have you got children's ibuprofen op? It should help the temp and can be taken alongside calpol

can I give a little bit of advice? Please don’t tell someone with health anxiety that they are over reacting and catastrophising. I’m strong enough to take comments like that but others might not be.

Now I don’t agree with what your saying, and I’ll explain why. Her temperature has lasted over a week she’s screaming in pain with her stomach and head she’s vomited yet again, has a nasty cough, and also I can see spots on her tonsils. Oh and she’s very lethargic. But thanks for the advice

Hi, thanks for the reply. 111 told me no ibuprofen until she has seen someone? But she seems so be in a lot of pain.

Sounds like tonsillitis which can be pretty poo.

The antibiotics may have helped, but possibly not if it is viral.

Kids are brilliantly resilient and will bounce between vomiting and dancing.

You can give ibuprofen as well to help with the temperature, if the gp recommends the abx this time give them to her.

StopSayingDueDiligence · 06/06/2021 08:08

This is the point I would give AB's.
It probably started off as viral but calpol not reducing a temperature is a red flag to infection.

OneMamaAndHerGirl · 06/06/2021 08:09

She’s now vomited again, it’s awful seeing her like this. She’s so clammy and distressed. Thank you for all your replies, I think your right she now needs some antibiotics x

Ah ok, just try and keep her as cool as you can but not so she's shivering and hopefully gp can help. Def take some with you to the appt so you can give immediately and if her temp goes up call them back.
Tonsillitis is crap and it requires a specific antibiotic so it might be of you had a general one it just wasn't strong enough

She didn’t have the antibiotics in the first place as the second GP said she was fine to fight it and to not give them to her. Even though they only gave a telephone consultation. I realise your not a doctor lol, but could tonsillitis possibly cause sickness ?

OneMamaAndHerGirl · 06/06/2021 08:13

Ah just checked the NHS website and it says it can cause nausea which I’m guessing can lead to vomiting?

Fitforforty · 06/06/2021 08:15

Has she had a covid PCR test?
She will only need antibiotics if the infection is bacterial.
A temperature in an ill child shows her body is fight the infection, it’s not a bad a sign.

Sunnysideup999 · 06/06/2021 08:16

Start her on the antibiotics ASAP. And don’t worry it’s not your health anxiety - I would be worried too.

AncientandFabulous · 06/06/2021 08:17

Ask them to also check for Quinsey. That was missed by several gps including a&e when my dc was little.

Hopefully it’s something simple like tonsillitis & antibiotics work.

Autumn101 · 06/06/2021 08:19

My youngest used to have awful tummy ache with tonsillitis when he was little - it can happen. He’d also often be sick as if he was trying to clear his throat due to the discomfort.

I hope your little one perks up soon, the advantage with kids is they can go downhill fast but also perk up so quickly when they get the right medication!

Star81 · 06/06/2021 08:19

I’m surprised they are seeing her with symptoms of a high temperature and cough without having a Covid test. Why haven’t you taken her for one ? Surely in these times that’s the first thing you do.

OneMamaAndHerGirl · 06/06/2021 08:21

She hasn’t got covid we had it 2 months ago this is totally different.

Right, we had covid 2 months ago. She hasn’t got covid so let’s move on from that. Vomiting, spots on tonsils, tummy ache, recurring temperature and a wet cough aren't signs of covid. Believe it or not there are other infections, viruses or whatever in this world.

You're not overreacting. A temp that high, lethargy, distress they're all things that together need checking out. You're doing the right thing to get her seen. (A HCP)
