To be worried about my 4 year olds temperature?

OneMamaAndHerGirl · 06/06/2021 07:04

Posting for traffic.

My 4 year old woke up last Saturday morning with a temp of 39.3 and vomited 5 times. She also developed a very chesty cough and snotty nose, called 111 and they made her an appointment with GP out of hours. He couldn’t see if there was any infection but prescribed her antibiotics anyway just incase. When we left there she was back to her normal self begging to go to the zoo (we didn’t go). So I waited until Monday to give her the antibiotics as her temperature didn’t return and I wanted a second opinion from her own GP. Monday morning her temperature returned so I spoke with the GP (phone consultation) and she said it was sensible to let her fight whatever this was without antibiotics as she was eating, drinking and has full energy. I was happy with that decision. She was fine all week doing all her activities, she did have a chesty cough and snotty nose still. But so did most of the other kids we saw out so thought nothing of it.
However, this morning at 5.30 she woke up and vomited once and had a temp of 39.9. I’m sick to my stomach with worry that something is seriously wrong with her. She has another appointment at 9am to be seen by a GP. I suffered with terrible health anxiety in the past regarding my daughter I almost had a breakdown and I’ve been A LOT better lately but this has triggered it. In my mind I’m trying to tell myself that it’s just the infection she never fought off and now needs antibiotics. Could this be possible? Or does anyone have similar experiences? She was absolutely fine yesterday putting on dance shows for us, eating like a horse and swimming in the paddling pool!
Please be kind, I feel riddled with anxiety.

@RedHelenB

Surely if you visit a doctor then you take that advice. Likelihood is by not giving the antibiotics the illness will last for longer and you've taken up more NHS time by needing another consultation.
If you RTFT you will see that he didn’t know where the infection was and even if there was one and by the time she left she was fine as she was all well and also I spoke to another GP and she advised not to give them. So thanks for that 👍

@cloudymaydays thank you so much for that. I know this isn’t covid, it’s extremely rare to catch covid so close together and she showing more signs of other things then blooming covid. NHS 111 were satisfied with her symptoms and were happy to get her seen.

There are lymph nodes in the abdomen which is why them swelling up can lead to vomiting and nausea in children (I guess a smaller space).

If you're being seen now it'll be OK and try not to worry. I would go to the ABs for the reason PP states, viral turned bacterial.

iamruth · 06/06/2021 09:09

I don’t know why the OP is asking on here, she doesn’t seem to have given antibiotics the first time because she knew better now she also magically knows it’s not COVID without a test... maybe she could use her powers to diagnose everyone else and also save everyone lots of time money and effort with PCR tests

Bramblespoint · 06/06/2021 09:12

I think OP that other posters weren't suggesting that you should have a test and sit and home waiting but rather have a test as well as being seen by GP/OOH etc. Just in case, it's the socially responsible thing to do, not just assume it's not COVID and go about as normal all week including seeing other kids Confused

Hope you get DD sorted this morning. My DS always got tummy ache with tonsillitis, they have glands there that's can swell up. Fingers crossed they give you antibiotics if she needs them and that she's feeling better really soon.

Oh and you are totally right to be worried I think most parents health anxiety or not would be worried

OneMamaAndHerGirl · 06/06/2021 09:13

Thank you everyone. It is indeed a nasty case of tonsillitis!

Poor little girl! Hope the treatment works quickly and she is back to herself soon!
iamruth · 06/06/2021 09:21

I feel exactly the same and frankly calling someone a cunt confirms to me that are indeed most likely to be the superior self important type who can’t stand the idea of doing the socially responsible thing and checking for COVId. I suspect your health anxiety is self diagnosed and what you actually suffer from is “knows best” syndrome.

I though it would be. Teenage DD2 was exactly the same as yours when she last had it. Hope your DD feels better very soon.

Oh shut up. The OP dealt with covid 2 months ago. She's experienced what its like, as have I. You would easily recognise it in your own child again. The symptoms she described that she was seeing I her child are nothing like covid.
Most infections cause a temperature, the covid cough is nothing like the chesty wet cough her child has now. Believe it or not, even in 2021 there are other illnesses beside covid about, many of which are much more serious in children.

Shock
HandfulofDust · 06/06/2021 09:33

She's probably just got a secondary infection she's caught as her immune sysem was busy fighting the first bug. I would just take her to the GP but don't panic.

loopyapp · 06/06/2021 09:33

I want to thank you for your post - I've been struggling with the same thing

My DS is 14mo and started with what we assumed was a sickness bug 11 days ago with vomiting with no temperature. For three days he would have episodes of extreme vomiting for an hour or so and then be completely fine for 12-24 hrs, eating playing usual stuff.

By day 4 he seemed to have stopped vomiting but he started with some pretty intense fevers. He has gotten as high as 41.1 and needed calpol 6hrly on the dot to have any chance of staying under 38. Around day 6 the vomiting returned and now on day 11 the vomiting is back at the levels it was in the beginning. Everything that goes in comes back up, water, breastmilk, food. However he hasn't properly had a temp for around 36hrs.

He saw the practice nurse on Wednesday and she decided he needed to have some urine and still sample tested. They were handed in Friday so hopefully results in tomorrow, however I've noticed this weekend his mouth and throat is covered in white stuff. COVERED.

I've been assuming his aversion to food has been down to nausea but now I'm wondering if he has tonsillitis or a Quincy.

Needless to say I'll be back on to the GP tomorrow. Don't be dismissed. My boy has lost so much weight and I wish I'd pushed harder on Wednesday. She didn't even look in His mouth.

Let me know how you get on.

Inastatus · 06/06/2021 09:34

Oh FFS, ignore the Covid comments - some people seen to think it’s the only bloody illness out there. I don’t know about your area but in mine there were fewer than 3 cases reported over the last week!

Anyway, I’m glad you know what it is now and I hope the antibiotics start working quickly and she feels better soon. Tonsillitis is horrible.

Springchickpea · 06/06/2021 09:36

@loopyapp DO NOT wait until tomorrow. I have a child who at age 3 ended up admitted with sepsis because a locum GP missed tonsillitis.

When dd was younger with a high temp, ibuprofen worked a lot better than paracetamol. Did the dr say she can take it? Glad you’ve got an answer and hope she’s better soon.

Go to out of hours today and get Antibiotics ASAP.
l2b2 · 06/06/2021 09:44

Just to clarify OP, has your daughter been given a different antibiotic to the one prescribed by the OOH doctor a few days ago?

l2b2 · 06/06/2021 09:45

It would be ironic if it was exactly the same antibiotic....

Greygreenblue · 06/06/2021 09:54

Poor kiddo, when I was little I used to get it like that, it would come on hard and fast and make me chuck. Mum took me to the 24 hour medical centre (not UK) in the middle of the night more than once.

Greygreenblue · 06/06/2021 09:55

Also it would be a different antibiotic - the one my kids had for tonsillitis is not the same one they’ve been given for pretty much everything else

Toddlerteaplease · 06/06/2021 10:12

Oh for FFS there are other virus's around other than Covid. Many of the usual winter bugs are around now.

SleepingStandingUp · 06/06/2021 10:21

@l2b2

It would be ironic if it was exactly the same antibiotic....
Then it would be the second doctor to blame as they said to discontinue.

But generic there might be an infection is likely to be amoyxcillin (sic) whereas it's a particular one for tonsillitis.
