To be worried about my 4 year olds temperature?

Posting for traffic.

My 4 year old woke up last Saturday morning with a temp of 39.3 and vomited 5 times. She also developed a very chesty cough and snotty nose, called 111 and they made her an appointment with GP out of hours. He couldn’t see if there was any infection but prescribed her antibiotics anyway just incase. When we left there she was back to her normal self begging to go to the zoo (we didn’t go). So I waited until Monday to give her the antibiotics as her temperature didn’t return and I wanted a second opinion from her own GP. Monday morning her temperature returned so I spoke with the GP (phone consultation) and she said it was sensible to let her fight whatever this was without antibiotics as she was eating, drinking and has full energy. I was happy with that decision. She was fine all week doing all her activities, she did have a chesty cough and snotty nose still. But so did most of the other kids we saw out so thought nothing of it.
However, this morning at 5.30 she woke up and vomited once and had a temp of 39.9. I’m sick to my stomach with worry that something is seriously wrong with her. She has another appointment at 9am to be seen by a GP. I suffered with terrible health anxiety in the past regarding my daughter I almost had a breakdown and I’ve been A LOT better lately but this has triggered it. In my mind I’m trying to tell myself that it’s just the infection she never fought off and now needs antibiotics. Could this be possible? Or does anyone have similar experiences? She was absolutely fine yesterday putting on dance shows for us, eating like a horse and swimming in the paddling pool!
Please be kind, I feel riddled with anxiety.

OP I'm glad you have seen another doctor and they have confirmed tonsillitis. I really hope she starts to feel better soon.

Also, to point out mostly for others, you said you all had covid 2 months ago. If that was confirmed then all this bashing your receiving about a PCR testing is even more ridiculous as you can't test for 90 days after a positive covid case!

Pissoi · 06/06/2021 10:31

For gods sake, not everything is covid!

Besides, she cannot have a PCR swab until it has been at least 90 days from her positive test. The PCR is so sensitive it will detect latent virus for up to 3 months after infection so can show as positive still despite no a time infection.

Ahhh cross post @Unexpectedbaby!

Oh poor little thing. I had tonsillitis once as a 38 year old and it was the most poorly (aside from actual flu once in my twenties) that I have ever felt. I can’t imagine how horrid it must be for a 4 year old

Bramblespoint · 06/06/2021 10:38

@Unexpectedbaby a common misconception unfortunately

If you develop new symptoms within 90days you should have a new PCR test and isolate as necessary.

I suffer from health anxiety too, it's consuming and absolutely horrible to deal with, so I can understand how you're feeling today.
Could it be your daughter maybe has a virus, bug or even tonsillitis (as you mentioned white spots - I had tonsillitis often as a child and caused vomiting, high temp and white spots for me), and because she hasn't rested properly this week, it just hasn't gone away? This happened to me as a child with my ear infection. Thought I was fine after antibiotics, went back to school, ended up making myself worse and getting an infection in the other ear.
I'm not criticising just to make it clear. Just offering an explanation. Even though she seemed fine in herself, her body was clearly trying to fight something which is hard to do when it's not getting the rest it needs.

If calling 111 will help your anxiety, I would do it for peace of mind. It's always worse at the weekend when things are closed I find.

Sorry op, I should have rtft 🙈

Hoping your little one gets better soon

Zippy1510 · 06/06/2021 10:58

Whilst they may prescribe a more specific antibiotic now (if the the tonsillitis is thought to be bacterial not viral) the type of broad spec antibiotic they likely prescribed initially would still have helped her clear the infection earlier. Having said that most cases of tonsillitis turn out to be viral.

Whenever we've been given general antibiotics it's always amoxicillin. When it's then progressed and got worse and into tonsillitis we've been told well that wouldn't have worked anyway, take this
