To ask if anyone ever gets a pickled egg?

I’ve had a chippy tea, there were pickled eggs in a jar and I’ve never had one, never seen anyone order one and never really heard of them spoken about.

Do people still get them? And what do they taste of? Grin

TBH in chip shops they aren't eggs, they're picked bulls testicles, enjoy

TheNinny · 05/06/2021 15:09

One time in a chippy I was asked if I wanted one by the cashier so said yes….not really knowing the etiquette etc. I just sort of ate into it from a toothpick, no idea if this is the norm. Was good though 👍

Don't like pickled eggs though my mum and sister love them. I adore pickled onions from the chippy though... My non British DH just looks confused at the idea of it all. I miss chippy tea, I live abroad so I can't have any unless I make it and its just not the same.... Unless anyone knows where to get the right vinegar for chips?

thereisonlyoneofme · 05/06/2021 15:15

does anyone remember the arrowroot biscuits you could get in the pub. I always wondered what the point of them was (missing point of thread)

HotChocolateLover · 05/06/2021 15:45

We get them sometimes and they’re lovely. I only started a couple of years ago after being curious because I’d never had one and never seen anyone order one. Once I had one I never looked back 😜 🥚 🐔

I used to love them. Had to have it wrapped up with your chips so was slightly warm by the time you eat it. No longer eat eggs and the thought of it makes me feel ill.

I live abroad too, but I brought a large bottle of malt vinegar with me! I sometimes make fish, chips and mushy peas. It's not quite the same, but it hits the spot. It's probably the methadone version of the real thing.

The only things I miss from the UK are takeaways really - Indian, Chinese, Kebab, Chippy. We try to recreate some dishes at home, with varying success. It's usually a lot of faff though, which is the opposite of the point of a takeaway.

LubaLuca · 05/06/2021 16:34

My local pub serves them perched on a sherry glass, like a pickled egg chaser.

One of my colleagues keeps a jar of them in the fridge at work. She's perfectly lovely in every other way.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 05/06/2021 16:37

I've had a few, they don't really float my boat, you may as well gargle with vinegar to get the same effect.

ColinKnocksTwoPence · 05/06/2021 18:04

I've never bought a pickled egg in a chip shop but used to regularly buy a jar of them from the supermarket.
Instant boiled eggs to go in a lunchtime sandwich, and with vinegar too.
Who could ask for anything better? 😊

misskatamari · 05/06/2021 18:06

I always wonder this! Never known anyone to talk about eating them ever. There was a guy at DHs work though, who used to go through jars of them apparently

TheLeadbetterLife · 05/06/2021 18:35

Well, FFS. Drooling over the thought of pickled eggs after this thread, I took one of my quail ones out of the jar and promptly tipped it over, spilling most of the spiced vinegar over my clothes, the countertop and into the kitchen drawers. Sigh. It's lucky I like the smell.

CMOTDibbler · 05/06/2021 18:42

Back in the day I used to go to a fabulous pub out in the woods which was like drinking in your grannys old fashioned cottage. No bar, they served straight from the cellar and they did the most amazing pickled eggs and pickled onions. Perfect with a packet of ready salted crisps and a pint of craft bitter

Peppapeg · 05/06/2021 18:43

Yes yes yes! My order is small battered sausage and chips, pickled egg, and we share a portion of battered mushrooms. So good.

Peppapeg · 05/06/2021 18:44

Also good at the pub, obviously in a bag of salt and vinegar crisps and shaken! Sometimes local markets etc do flavoured ones, curry ones are especially nice.

despondentatwork · 05/06/2021 18:46

I'm from NI. I have never, ever, ever seen nor heard of a pickled egg when buying or eating chips. Ever.

Horehound · 05/06/2021 18:52

Not the egg but I always get pickled onions :)

GameSetMatch · 05/06/2021 19:13

When I was at college many moons ago my friend use to get one everyday, I’d never seen anybody have one before. I’d forgotten all about ‘Joanne’ until you mentioned pickled eggs!

sashh · 06/06/2021 05:18

despondentatwork

What? Is the whole of NI devoid of pickled eggs?

Pongo101 · 06/06/2021 06:25

If you don't fancy an egg pickled in vinegar you could try one of these:

I love pickled eggs, but have never had a chippy one, only ever ones I made at home. My mum used to always have big jars when i was little, we would pickle up a load in the run up to Christmas. One year i remember she gave me a massive jar of 2 dozen to take back to uni in January, that was fab.
