To ask if anyone ever gets a pickled egg?

I’ve had a chippy tea, there were pickled eggs in a jar and I’ve never had one, never seen anyone order one and never really heard of them spoken about.

Do people still get them? And what do they taste of? Grin

People around here put them in packets of crisps.

TheLeadbetterLife · 05/06/2021 00:16

Egg in a packet of crisps is my favourite pub snack. There are pubs - the finest establishments - that still do them.

They spoon the egg into the bag for you, then you shake it around a bit to get crisp crumbs all stuck on the egg, then eat it with your fingers.

It's best with salt and vinegar crisps, but cheese and onion or ready salted also works.

I keep chickens and pickle their eggs whenever I have a glut. It's the best snack.

IHaveBrilloHair · 05/06/2021 00:17

Occasionally.
I love them but Im intolerant to eggs.
Eggy stuff that you just have a bit of is fine, but plain, whole eggs, not so much!
I do sometimes still get one though, and just eat a wee bit.
I love anything pickled.

IndieKate · 05/06/2021 00:18

I love pickled eggs haven't had one for ages. I used to buy massive jars of them at the cash and carry. The ones in the supermarket aren't as nice.

percheron67 · 05/06/2021 00:29

scrumptious. I have mine with crisp sandwiches.

Arbadacarba · 05/06/2021 00:33

Another pickled egg fan.

I'm trying to lose weight at the moment so the sugar content rules them out for me, but they really are delicious. Especially with (another massive no-no Grin ) a bag of plain crisps.

IHaveBrilloHair · 05/06/2021 00:34

I have them with a chippy tea.
I also have either a big pickled onion, or a few silverskin onions.
Must be the Goldstar brand.

Homemade ones don't have sugar, and they're dead easy to make. The hardest part is peeling the eggs.
Arbadacarba · 05/06/2021 00:47

I've never tried making my own - I'll have a Google,

FelicityBeedle · 05/06/2021 00:49

My mum has a friend who keeps quails, she boils the eggs and puts them into the juice from a jar of normal pickles, bite size pickled eggs!

TheLeadbetterLife · 05/06/2021 00:54

I have a jar of pickled quails eggs that are about ready to eat actually. Until a few weeks ago I was keeping quail, but I re-homed them as my dog and cats were stressing them out. Peeling quail eggs is an absolute bastard mind.

MrsApplepants · 05/06/2021 00:56

I like boiled eggs and pickled onions but this thread is making me feel ill. I’m definitely not brave enough to try one.

BluePeterVag · 05/06/2021 01:00

I want to try one but I can’t get it past my lips Grin eggs give me very bad wind so I reckon it would be a floating duvet night after one of those.

VienneseWhirligig · 05/06/2021 01:07

@TheLeadbetterLife have you tried the jam jar peeling method? You put the boiled eggs in a jam jar half filled with water, put the lid on and shake it, and it peels the egg while you are shaking. I haven't tried it with quails eggs, just hens, but it works.

TheLeadbetterLife · 05/06/2021 01:12

Interesting! No I haven't heard of that, I'll give it a go. I can't imagine it would work with quails' eggs though - the shell is like cling film on those things.

TheChiefJo · 05/06/2021 01:14

Pickled eggs are alright. They taste, as you might imagine, like egg and vinegar.

Summerfun54321 · 05/06/2021 01:16

WTF that’s not right.

Crazycakelady17 · 05/06/2021 01:18

I don’t eat eggs so no haven’t tried one sound pretty vile to me but I do like pickled onions with some slices of corned beef and some home made chips

MazDazzle · 05/06/2021 01:20

Never had one.

Always looking to try something de at the chippy though, so next time I’ll order one.

XenoBitch · 05/06/2021 01:23

I always turned my nose up at them, then the mother of my partner at the time made us a jar for xmas. They were bloody amazing!

XelaM · 05/06/2021 01:34

They are utterly vile-tasting!!! And I love both eggs and pickles, but a pickled egg was one of the most awful things I've ever put in my mouth

Serpenta · 05/06/2021 01:43

Where in the world do people pop a pickled egg inside a packet of crisps and consider that a delicious snack?

Royston Vasey?

HemanOrSheRa · 05/06/2021 01:44

Oh my mouth is watering. I love pickled eggs and a big fat Wally with a chippy tea! And pickled onions and the vinegar on the chips,

MazDazzle · 05/06/2021 01:54

new!

BlueDucky · 05/06/2021 06:02

@bethmc93

I can just imagine them floating around in their jars for 43 years tbh, they’d probably tell a good taleGrin
Me too, I've always assumed they are ornamental but this thread has made me tempted to try one.
