Holidays - Here we don’t...

DadAManger · 03/06/2021 22:09

We are back to where we always feared we would be (again). No more holidays in Portugal. The rest of the green list is a washout, where we aren’t welcome in Singapore or Australia anyway. Now we have a new `Vietnam Variant’ and new “Nepal Variant’ - and we kept the air border with India opened far too long and now we have a spike. Where on earth do we go from here? Skegness again.

Is the Government being reasonable?

Good news.

It's good news but of course we don't know the "when", the operative word seems to be "soon"...fingers crossed....

Yeah they’ve not announced details. But Biden is here for the weekend , think he landed yesterday and the announcement from n10 was last night at 10. They’ve few days ahead to provide more info

TBH/IMHO (and sadly) I think the fact that there is going to be a travel taskforce set up to look at this means nothing is going to happen very quickly...

Rumour I've heard elsewhere (aviation related forum)is that the USA was keen on opening things up a month or two back but the UK wasn't, now given the appearance of the delta variant the States aren't quite as keen as they were. Setting up a task force makes it looks like progress is being made but it also kicks the can down the road for a bit longer...

I really really hope I'm proved wrong.

ConstanceGracy · 10/06/2021 13:17

Considering our so called “transport minister” is against travelling, I don’t see this happening any time soon ..

loginfail · 10/06/2021 13:28

He seems to be the invisible man when it comes to actually being an advocate in cabinet of the industries in his "care".

Then again given he keeps his own light aircraft on the American register to avoid the costs and complications of having on the UK register - the one he's ultimately responsible for - the lack of effort and interest is not surprising.

iminthegarden · 10/06/2021 13:52

People virtue signalling about giving up their overseas hols and taking uk hols ... the irony being you're far more likely to catch covid in your packed uk camp site, hotel or theme park than the Greek isles or Balearics this summer

Plantsandwine · 10/06/2021 14:02

@Aposterhasnoname

It’s bloody ridiculous. The people demanding we all holiday in the uk are the same ones waving pictures of packed parks and beaches and screeching about third waves. People are bing turned away from beaches, holiday accommodation is fully booked, and tripled in price and restaurants are packed.

And the “holidays aren’t essential” crowd can fuck off as well. Maybe holidays aren’t essential to those that have spent the last year or so on furlough, or working from home in their nice comfy homes with big gardens. They are bloody essential for those of us that have kept the country going this last year.

This. Completely agree

*Transatlantic operators BA, Virgin and American Airlines had hoped there would be an agreement between President Biden and Boris Johnson at the G7 to create an air corridor between the US & UK.

But the industry was disappointed last night to be told a taskforce would only start looking at recommendations.*

@Tealightsandd It's actually pretty disgraceful if the UK government prioritises foreign travel over our own UK tourism industry. Particularly after the damage suffered by UK businesses during the pandemic.
So we should be supporting the U.K. campsites and cafes but letting the airlines, airports and all the U.K. workers who work in those businesses go tits up? Crawley has been massively hit by the hit to foreign travel, perhaps they should put up some glamping pods on the side of the runway at Gatwick and say they are supporting the U.K. tourism industry? 🙄 Summer looking rosey for businesses in Cornwall does not mean U.K. businesses are not suffering elsewhere. I think if you are not in the U.K. aviation industry in one way or another, you cannot possibly comprehend how dire the situation is for an industry which supports 10s of 1000s of households in Britain. The company I am in has just sent out a flurry of emails announcing more furlough for most employees, and at the same time we received a list of condolence books for colleagues who have either taken their own lives or died of Covid. It is fucking awful, and supporting the U.K. tourism sector will not save thousands and thousands of workers from losing their jobs still. I’ve been living under a work-related cloud since the pandemic began which has dominated mine and my colleagues lives, and is showing no signs of going away. The way the government has messed the industry around means there is very little chance of recovery any time soon.

In case you have not heard:

....and I never thought I would ever agree with Theresa May but...

Sorry, that was for Mapmaker..

EasterIssland · 11/06/2021 14:44

1.5m people work in tourism , the other day they said they're losing billions with all this, but how dare we support this economy!

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 11/06/2021 15:13

@Mapmaker I completely agree with everything you've said and I feel for anyone impacted by this. It's an utter joke. Also agree with Teresa May for once in my life!

notanothertakeaway · 11/06/2021 15:24

Slightly off topic, but I can recommend a home exchange as a free, flexible holiday

No, thanks. My insurer won't cover for that anyway. Plenty of people don't have the quality of home needed for those, either. Or they rent and that's forbidden by their tenancy agreement.
chocolatesaltyballs22 · 11/06/2021 15:46

@notanothertakeaway - not sure how that would work when I'm leaving my 18 year old in our house!

RuggerHug · 11/06/2021 16:08

I actually roared laughing at this comment.

Mapmaker · 11/06/2021 17:47

@loginfail thanks, I know about the day of action through work. I had a login fail as well and am normally someone else. 😉😆

LadyMonet · 11/06/2021 19:25

I work in inbound tourism. The business I worked so hard to build is gone. It'll take a long time to get it back. Everything I've worked for and I'm not young.
