Holidays - Here we don’t...

We are back to where we always feared we would be (again). No more holidays in Portugal. The rest of the green list is a washout, where we aren’t welcome in Singapore or Australia anyway. Now we have a new `Vietnam Variant’ and new “Nepal Variant’ - and we kept the air border with India opened far too long and now we have a spike. Where on earth do we go from here? Skegness again.

Is the Government being reasonable?

I can't believe they only brought in 6 planeloads of PPE today. That seems way too little.

loginfail · 04/06/2021 18:14

You think wrong, some are.

Moretimetobefullyvaccinated · 04/06/2021 18:54

We went to Skegness last week and it was bloody lovely, but then I've never been one to need a foreign holiday. Kids were happy, sun was out, toilets were open, and that's all I need.

Sorry but I'd rather stay at home than do that, good for you but most people would like a lot more than that. Skegness v Maldives ..... there's a dilemma

PreservativeFree · 04/06/2021 19:02

I actually did LOL at the idea that "most" people ever face a Skegness v Maldives dilemma Grin

dreamingbohemian · 04/06/2021 19:38

What is the deal with Skegness anyway? As a non-Brit I've always wondered why it's the go-to example of a shit holiday. All that google tells me is it's an old-timey seaside town.

Anyway there's plenty of other places to go in the UK. Also laughing at the idea that everyone would be going to the Maldives normally.

Perpetuallytiredzzz · 04/06/2021 19:44

Thing is, this holiday in the U.K. idea doesn’t work for many people, it’s exorbitantly expensive for poor quality food and drink (and most accommodation) in tourist areas, camping is something you have to want to do, whether here or abroad, and the main issue - weather. All well and good saying you’ve had a great time this half term in Skeggy but would you have the same experience if it was peeing it down/blowing a gale for your whole trip?? Also I go on holiday to not have to do all the cooking, cleaning and general life stuff because we have one child with a disability and another young dd, and both work in busy jobs, so I don’t want to go camping/self catering which is the main offer in the U.K. but also desperately need a break from the stresses of working as a key worker over the last year and keeping everything going at home.
And that’s before I get on to the fact we can only go in school holidays so if things open up in September even we’re pretty much buggered for another year anyway Sad

It's like Blackpool only shitter. I hate this term usually, but "chavvy" is the only way to describe it.

Yep. We went to Skeggy one October and the weather was brilliant for the first 5 days. I mean, amazing, we were in shorts and tshirts. The last two days it tipped rain and it gave the holiday a different quality indeed. We were also in a quite luxurious caravan with good WiFi, tellies in the bedrooms so the kids would watch what they wanted, a game console, etc.

If you'd been camping it would have been miserable.

@SaltAndVinegarSandwiches

And the “holidays aren’t essential” crowd can fuck off as well. Maybe holidays aren’t essential to those that have spent the last year or so on furlough, or working from home in their nice comfy homes with big gardens. They are bloody essential for those of us that have kept the country going this last year.

Oh get over yourself. I've been run off my feet all year and a holiday abroad isn't essential. Lots of people working minimum wage jobs could never afford one anyway. Just go somewhere in the UK like people have been doing for generations. I usually go abroad each year but this year I'm not and I'll survive. Lots of nice places in the UK.

Couldn't agree more. I too have worked all through in retail complete with all the arseholeness that came with it. We haven't been away for 8 years so to hear people moaning about missing out for 2 years makes my heart bleed. We have two adult dc living with us one wfh in her bedroom and the other in a garage both of whom are suffering with anxiety and depression so please forgive me if I don't give a fuck that people can't go to Portugal.

Yes, maybe I over egged the pudding there! Ok, substitute Maldives for Greece, the principal is the same

NavalGazer · 04/06/2021 20:10

The USA have got it right - vaccinate and allow the vaccinated to get back to normal.

Life there is pretty much normal.

Yes they have a higher death toll but I bet most of the survivors think it’s a price worth paying

Indeed!
Blossomtoes · 04/06/2021 20:29

Those people will never be able to afford the UK with the hugely inflated prices

Depends where they want to go. We’ve booked a seaside holiday in a mid market hotel in the north east for the first week in August - £60 a night.

LimeAndLemons · 04/06/2021 20:41

We booked for the Canaries last 2 weeks in July. For me, DH, and ds it cost £4.5k in a good 4 star hotel all inclusive. Booked it at Christmas thinking that everything would be back to normal by now 🙄

We looked at caravans in Cornwall and Devon for the same 2 weeks and it was more expensive! Just a joke with the pricing, I know it's with supply and demand but it's rip off Britain. Then most of the food is expensive and crap, parking charges everywhere, plus the weather could be hit and miss.

dreamingbohemian · 04/06/2021 20:59

Thanks @Waxonwaxoff0 I've never been to Blackpool either but I've heard more about it, so I guess I get the idea!

Coldwine75 · 04/06/2021 21:01

Im laughing at the idiotic people booking Portugal, come on you must know the situation can change at any time, I have no sympathy,

Stay UK this year and support our economy?

Coldwine75 · 04/06/2021 21:02

Holidays abroad = first world problem

Of course cuz those of us that decide to travel abroad don’t support the British economy by paying the taxes or spending the rest of the year in British shops ... yeah we import all our food , go to the restaurants abroad only and we don’t pay the taxes ...

You're also potentially helping support the UK economy/UK travel industry if you travel abroad using a British travel company/British Tour Operator/British airline.
AlwaysLatte · 05/06/2021 08:45

This was always going to be a possibility. We booked a couple of cottage holidays this year in the UK to be sure they wouldn't all be snapped up later!

EasterIssland · 05/06/2021 08:48

@loginfail thanks for also pointing that out. Seems like we only help the economy if we only live our pennies in an overpriced area this summer !

backinthebox · 05/06/2021 09:23

Holidays abroad = first world problem
To my colleagues and ex-colleagues (one of whom is here and who’s career finished as a result of the Covid redundancies) I shall point out them struggling to pay their bills because an entire industry has collapsed is a first world problem. How fucking ignorant. 🙄

Anna727b · 07/06/2021 00:47

There are some stunningly beautiful places in the UK- plenty of places to holiday.

Anna727b · 07/06/2021 01:00

These beaches are in Scotland and Cornwall respectively- considering everyone (who can afford it- remember lots of people cannot!) needs to holiday in the UK this year; I think we're very lucky to live here!
