To think this is too far to walk?

To school for a child?

15 minutes there and then 15 minutes back. Child is 7. It's to collect another child so would have to do the walk back immediately.

@HeronLanyon

apostropheuse ‘long summer evening walks with my grandmother’ - that is an absolutely lovely image. Smile
Great memories 🙂

My 4 year old climbed the Brecon Beacon...and walked to school over a mile each way every day.

VettiyaIruken · 03/06/2021 15:31

No wonder kids are looking like little barrels these days. Half an hour is perfectly fine for a child.
If they lack the energy to do that, take them to a doctor

ShirleyPhallus · 03/06/2021 15:32

Very disappointed no one has yet mentioned;

  • obesity crisis
  • their kid was doing the 3 peaks every weekend at age 4

These have been mentioned numerous times.

Our son, when he was four, would walk to pre school which was a good 25 minutes walk. He'd run about all morning then have a 25 minute walk home.

By the time he was 7 he'd do that walk, all day at school, a run around the play park after school on a fine day then walk home.

He or she will be fine.

GreyhoundG1rl · 03/06/2021 15:34

@TrinidadQueen

Yes it would be at the end of a school day which is my concern.
Confused Unless the child has health issues you haven't mentioned? Do they really move so little during the course of the day that a 15 minute walk could seem excessive?!
Iusedtoliveinsanfrancisco · 03/06/2021 15:35

Healthy Children should be walking/ running 12000 steps a day. Half hour walk is about 3000 so it’s definitely fine.

HeronLanyon · 03/06/2021 15:36

Hang on everyone do you think it could be a typo and it’s 15 miles there and 15 back ??
That would be a good question!

3Britnee · 03/06/2021 15:36

@TrinidadQueen

I am simply concerned it will be too far for my grandchild. Please do not throw such accusations my way. It is a simple enough question that I am asking.
It could be a bit too far. Their cotton wool might fall off.
Sunshineonarainydayy · 03/06/2021 15:37

They'll get used to it. Bring a little after school snack for them.

letsgowiththat · 03/06/2021 15:37

My DCs 6 and 3 regularly go on 2 hour walks with us around local parks etc with no breaks.
When weather permits I walk with my 3yo to collect my 6yo from school which is about 25-30mins one way. Never hear complaints.

15mins is nothing for a 7yo they'd will be fine.

THNG5 · 03/06/2021 15:37

Seriously??? This must be a wind up. I'll be walking longer than that with my 5 year old and 4 year old, whilst pushing my 2 year old and baby. And the 2 year old will probably want to walk as well. 15 min for a typical 7 year old is nothing!

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 03/06/2021 15:37

Another vote for the OP being mean about her DIL.

Yes good point!

Or 15 hours?

In which case it would be a problem...

WeatherwaxOn · 03/06/2021 15:38

It's absolutely fine.
My DC walked far further than that regularly as soon as they were able to walk.
We'd walk 2 miles twice a day at least once a week, and quite often 1.5 miles to nursery.

HeronLanyon · 03/06/2021 15:39

sofia well 15 hours and then another 15 back. Only just over a day. Arguable, no? Grin

why do you think it is too far?
Mama1980 · 03/06/2021 15:40

Blimey yes it's fine. No issue whatsoever. All of mine walk much further than that ever day.

Schoolchoicesucks · 03/06/2021 15:40

Nope, my dc did this from age 3 with childminder taking and picking children from school, twice a day, except school was 20 mins walk from her house rather than 15.

Take snacks and a drink, maybe a scooter. It'll be fine.

LondonJax · 03/06/2021 15:41

@TrinidadQueen - don't forget humans are made to walk. It's how we got around for thousands and thousands of years before cars. We managed to find new lands, wage wars and hunt for food long before the wheel was even invented. And we've not evolved much since then in relation to the way our bodies move. Our legs are meant to be used.

Most of the school day at 7 years old is spent at a seat, apart from PE and breaks so a nice 30 minute walk is exactly what is needed. Before school age kids hurtle around all day (ever tried to keep up with a toddler). That ability doesn't suddenly change when we hit school age.

MrMeeseekslookatme · 03/06/2021 15:42

Unless they are walking through Mordor, then I genuinely do not understand what the problem is.

CuriousandReady · 03/06/2021 15:44

It’s not a bragging post by me at all but my son has walked everywhere since he could walk. He’s not used a buggy since 18 months and has just been expected to walk. We walk miles a day and now he can ride a bike, we can easily do 10 miles a day.

Why are kids today so idle?

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 03/06/2021 15:45

Well 15 miles is over half a marathon and would take me about 4 hours to walk, so if the OP meant 15 miles instead of minutes then she has a point of it being too far Grin

100 percent this. Unless there is a massive drip feed any child should manage this easily. Its people who ferry children in cars for short walks like this because they think its too much that are helping childhood obesity. Horrendous weather excluded obviously.
