To think this is too far to walk?

To school for a child?

15 minutes there and then 15 minutes back. Child is 7. It's to collect another child so would have to do the walk back immediately.

@Greenmarmalade

Bring a snack to keep them happy when tired after school.
It's not the London marathon! A child does not need a snack to keep them going on a 30 min walk (especially one with a 5-10 min break in the middle). Kids also don't need food "to keep them happy" (especially, again, for such a short period) and snacks won't really help even IF the kid were tired. Which they really shouldn't be (and if they are, you'd want to see a doctor, not try to bribe them with food).

Oh mrmees that really really made me laugh. Thank you.

newnamenellie · 03/06/2021 15:46

I work at a pre school. We have children aged 3 and 4 who walk over half an hour to get to the setting. And back again at home time...

CirqueDeMorgue · 03/06/2021 15:46

Don't be silly.

Bluebird76 · 03/06/2021 15:47

While we're on the 4 Yorkshiremen theme, we recently took our 7yo on a 7 hour walk in the Peaks. I was more tired than her by the end, and definitely more achey next day. 7 is about the age that a fit child can start to give adults a run for their money!

melodypondisasuperhero · 03/06/2021 15:47

Of course it’s not too far but I hope there’s no time constraints on that 15 minute walk, I walk about 15 minutes to pick up DS5 and then the same walk takes at least 30 minutes on the way back (dawdling, playing games etc), I definitely wouldn’t like my chances if I needed to be back in 15 minutes. Grin

NeverTrustaRabbit · 03/06/2021 15:47

Crikey! You are referring to a 30 min walk for a 7yr old with no issues (apart from an over protective grandmother who doesn't do fart jokes or like her 8yr old grandchild being talked to about death)

You haven't explained why you think it is too far that might alter the responses you are getting. Might also be helpful if you gave us some background as to why you are so overprotective of your grandchildren.....(do you just have the two, aged 7 and 8?)

MaxNormal · 03/06/2021 15:48

That's no distance at all. What a strange question.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 03/06/2021 15:48

It is completely normal for a child to be able to walk that. You could always get them to use a scooter if they are unused to walking but it is not very demanding.

I live near a local park, the primary aged children are on that after school running about, cartwheeling, then walking home afterwards. Your Grandchild will learn to walk that without complaint.

caringcarer · 03/06/2021 15:48

My dgc aged 5 goes on 5k hikes with his Mum. Has a picnic then hikes 5k back. Exercise is good for children it makes them stronger. Unless your child has mobility issues as part of additional needs they should manage that and double that with no problems. If they could not walk for 30 mins I would be very worried. Are they a lot over weight?

LittleMissNaice · 03/06/2021 15:49

Could any of the 4% who voted YANBU explain why? I'm genuinely curious

KitKat1985 · 03/06/2021 15:49

Another one a bit baffled by the question. A couple of 15 minute walks should be nothing for an average 7 year old, and if anything most kids don't get enough exercise so sounds like a great idea.

ChaBishkoot · 03/06/2021 15:50

Even if it was every day it wouldn't be that long a walk.

Waiting423 · 03/06/2021 15:52

They will be fine - provided you don’t paint it as an issue , and provided they can dawdle on the way back …. It will probably do them good - pretty sure government advice is minimum 1 hour a day of activity for children

Waiting423 · 03/06/2021 15:53

I should also add that my child at that age managed a 13 mile sponsored walk

Yes I was thinking the same

Oh god - is this no sense of humour can't joke about farts grandmother?
Nietzschethehiker · 03/06/2021 15:54

My 5 year old does the same twice a ay with his 8 year old brother Monday to Friday (and an adult obviously) and they love those walks. I'd be genuinely quite concerned if no extra needs or disability and they couldn't walk that.

Rather than be something to worry about it should be something to be pleased about.

YesPleaseMary · 03/06/2021 15:54

No it is not too far.
It’s not far enough!

My Dds did their first Munro last year at the ages of 7 and 5.

ImprobablePuffin · 03/06/2021 15:54

This has to be a wind up, no?

itshappened · 03/06/2021 15:55

My three year old has no problem walking to and from nursery, covering a similar distance, every day. This isn't a stealth post, I'm just trying to highlight how ridiculous it is to think a 7 year old can't manage that distance!

starbrightstarlight8888 · 03/06/2021 15:56

What a bizarre thread. Of course it's not too far.

seven201 · 03/06/2021 15:56

Definitely not too far. I think lots of kids walk that to school and back.

Onceuponatime1818 · 03/06/2021 15:56

My 2.5 and 4.4 year old would do that walk daily probably 8 times!

CeibaTree · 03/06/2021 15:57

It's not too far for an average child but if they have additional needs or they are very unfit then it could be a problem. If they have a scooter, just push them along on that if they are too tired?
