To think this is too far to walk?

To school for a child?

15 minutes there and then 15 minutes back. Child is 7. It's to collect another child so would have to do the walk back immediately.

Very confusing - on the face of it there’s absolutely no reason a 7 year old can’t walk for 30 mins?

Xztop · 03/06/2021 17:35

I thought this was a joke when I read it.
No wonder there is a child obesity problem in this country...

The only time I'd say its too far is if there were other health concerns.

impossible · 03/06/2021 17:36

Fifteen minutes is fine. Thirty would be fine too - and it's a nice opportunity to spend time talking together.

junipertree2 · 03/06/2021 17:37

I could see that it would start to wear on them after a while, but like all walking, beneficial to health. Rotten if it's pouring with rain, obviously.

Some schools in my area have recently started doing 'miles' in the morning in the playground, I would imagine to address weight and inactivity concerns. Is this really so different?

Cottonheadedninymuggins · 03/06/2021 17:38

From 5 to 11 my walk to and from school was 40 minutes each way.

11 to 18 it was 70 minutes.

It's definitely not too far (!)

impossible · 03/06/2021 17:39

It's perfectly normal for a 7 year old to walk that far. Hopefully they will have been running around at school during playtime too so will be fairly fit.
I'm thinking, as you are a grandma, you perhaps had to walk at least that far to school too - or if not you, then your friends.

MsPavlichenko · 03/06/2021 17:39

My three year old daughter did twenty five minutes to and from nursery for two years. She was used to walking as her big brother is/was a wheelchair user so no alternative . No problems at all.

MsAwesomeDragon · 03/06/2021 17:41

Dd2 was doing that amount of walking twice a day at the age of 2 (the cm had 2 younger charges in the double buggy most days), so I definitely don't think it's too far for a 7yo.

wizzywig · 03/06/2021 17:42

You know you're child will do PE? And it could be for an hour!!!!

Me too.
Fifteen minutes for a seven year old is completely fine.

messeduphair · 03/06/2021 17:42

Absolutely fine! Get a scooter if necessary. Reverse?

Runssometimes · 03/06/2021 17:44

Worth remembering that the statutory distance to school is two miles which should take a four year old no more than 50minutes. I’d also worry about any able bodied seven year old that couldn’t walk half an hour. After school it’s sensible to bring a snack as it might be a while since lunch but with that time for chatting it’s a nice way for them to tell about their day. And minimum 60 minutes daily of physical activity is recommended so it’s a good way to get it in.

CanofCant · 03/06/2021 17:46

What a tiresome, vague and pointless thread.

BirthdayCakeBelly · 03/06/2021 17:47

I’d have serious concerns about any 7 year old that struggled to do a 15 minute walk.

notawittyname1954 · 03/06/2021 17:47

Definitely not too far for a 7 year old

What has the other child got to do with it?

Will the child be walking to school and THEN 15 minutes walk to get another child?

JinglingHellsBells · 03/06/2021 17:48

Good grief.
When I went to school at 7, I walked a mile there, a mile home for my lunch, a mile back, then a mile home at the end of a school day.

4 miles a day. Most children did.

ineedaholidaynow · 03/06/2021 17:49

How much exercise does this child normally do? Do they not walk on a regular basis as a family?

LadyDanburysCane · 03/06/2021 17:49

Not at all. My youngest walked a mile each way twice a day from four years when taking the eldest to and from school. Until then I took the buggy so he could get in and out as he wished.

Walking into town for shopping was about three miles all told and DCs were easily managing that on a regular basis by the age of 7.

When we moved as children, my sister was 5 and i was 7, our walk to school was a 15 minute one.

LowlandLucky · 03/06/2021 17:51

Jeez oh, they are 7 years old. I just watched a video of a 2 year old climbing a Scottish mountain, she refused to be carried. If a 2 year old can do that a 7 year old can walk for a whole 15 minutes.

Wombats12 · 03/06/2021 17:54

My bf was a childminder and she did with several 3 & 4 yo's, collecting them from various schools. I struggled but they were all a fit as fiddles!

itsgettingwierd · 03/06/2021 17:54

Legs are going to evolve into stumps Grin

Why are you concerned? Do you have parental guardianship and are looking after the child and have concerns about their physical health?

Or are you looking for Mners to give you something to bash your DIL with Wink

Thefaceofboe · 03/06/2021 17:55

I am spluttering at someone suggesting this is a reverse Grin unlucky kid get your shoes on

Violinist64 · 03/06/2021 17:56

I think it would be good exercise for your child and I am shocked that you would think otherwise.
