Do I need a PCR test to get into the republic? Do I need to quarantine? I keep reading the gov sites, and then at the end it says 'except Ireland or the Common Travel Area'. I don't understand!!!!!

@TheKeatingFive

I’m perfectly legally (and within guidelines) going to see my parents.

You can do what you like, but as there’ll be plane/boat travel coming over from GB all the time I don’t think it’ll be making any big statements.

Hope your parents are vaccinated at this stage so they won’t be harmed by those you support who disregard the quarantine.

If you get some time it could be worth reading about how covid spreads as you seem incredibly clueless. You could start with this article about how one person with covid spread it to 54 people. Showing how every single persons actions are important.

www.google.ie/amp/s/www.irishtimes.com/news/health/spread-of-covid-19-from-shop-worker-led-to-54-people-becoming-infected-1.4575042%3fmode=amp

They are.

I’m aware how Covid spreads. You might want to look at current border policy, laws, guidelines and how that impacts your numbers.

Serpenta · 03/06/2021 16:35

@Peridot1, I hope you have a lovely time with your dad. I'm sure you're delighted to be there with him and he's equally delighted to have you home. Best of luck to him with his treatment Flowers

Could’ve fooled me!!!!

I don’t think people quarantining or not quarantining will make a button of difference

Confused
alwayswithhope · 03/06/2021 16:36

@Peridot1 sorry to hear your Dad is unwell. Take care.

EmeraldShamrock · 03/06/2021 16:47

Person 1 - goes to U.K., comes home and quarantines, gets positive test, continues to quarantine until no longer infected with covid. Infects no one else. No impact.

Person 2 - goes to U.K., comes home, doesn’t quarantine. Is positive for covid. Spreads covid to family members and friends, who spread it to family members and friends and schools and work colleagues, causes local outbreak and increase in cases of very virulent Indian variant to spread across the country.
No one suggested do as person 2 done. The posts you're jumping on was discussing a poster leaving Ireland to see her DD, there was no discussion on how she should skip quarantine on her return.
Quarantine is not required in the UK.
The NI border comment was specifically for the poster if worried leave through NI to arrive in the UK as that is legal.
You're twisting it.

EmeraldShamrock · 03/06/2021 16:51

I don’t think people quarantining or not quarantining will make a button of difference. A difference to the spread considering the border is open with no quarantine in NI, many NI residents work in the republic on building sites and will spread it.
Blame Boris.

smittenkittten · 03/06/2021 17:02

It's not about crossing the border into NI, it's about sneaking through the north to get to GB and beyond, getting away without having to do a PCR test and filling in your locator form on the way back. It's not about the normal GB-NI flows, it's about all the people from the republic using the open border to pull a fast one. As you know.

I don’t think that’s happening is it. People don’t need to sneak into the UK through the north. There are flights into the UK from the Republic every day and currently no need for covid tests. Britain, Ireland, the Chanel Islands and the Isle of Man are all part of the common travel area. It’s only going into Ireland where restrictions apply. As long as people have a valid reason for travel it’s fine.

What makes you think I wouldn't quarantine. I'd have the test in the UK, quarantine then have another test here in Ireland. There are planes coming into Ireland from the UK every day. I'm presuming they'll all be doing the same. Or are you suggesting all flights into Ireland should be stopped?

alwayswithhope · 03/06/2021 17:13

@EmeraldShamrock the suggestions made on this thread were for people to fly into the Republic of Ireland via the north specifically to avoid requirements of quarrantine and having a PCR.

alwayswithhope · 03/06/2021 17:15

@seashells11 What makes you think I wouldn't quarantine. I'd have the test in the UK, quarantine then have another test here in Ireland.

Why do you think you’re person 2? I was responding to a poster who said that quarantine was a waste of time.

If you are travelling for an essential reason and do all of the above there is no problem.

But weren’t you the poster who was considering taking up the suggestion to shop for a dead person online then pretend you were going to their funeral to be able to travel? 🤢

Sorry - You don’t see how someone coming into Ireland from U.K. via the north, avoiding quarantine and then if positive spreading covid everywhere could make a difference to the spread of covid? I mean it’s directly contributing to the spread. Confused

Wrong. The posts you ran with were mine and keatings both were responding to @seashells11 not the OP.
Well you know it.
I suspect that you are going to twist that too.
Anyway @seashells11 I hope you've a lovely time.

No I wasn't seriously considering it, but a poster was trying to be helpful that's all. Once I'd took the time to think about it I wouldn't have.

seashells11 · 03/06/2021 17:28

Thank you Emerald

I was responding to the following in this thread:

On local radio NI today it reported that lots of southerners and GB people are travelling through NI then south without testing or isolation perfectly legally.

Yes technically you can go through the North

I live near Belfast and there are a very large amount of southern reg cars around the last few weeks and a lot of southern Irish folk in the city. No one is really that bothered

Cant afford to pay for PCR for all of us, and quarantine, plus another PCR. I wonder could I go down from the north

I think it could be classed as essential if not fly from Belfast

Go through the North and no one is paying attention.

It’s just pragmatism. The border between ROI and UK generally is absolutely full of holes. There’s no appetite to tighten any of this, so it’s hardly surprising if quarantining isn’t taken seriously.

We don’t need people coming from U.K. to Ireland or travelling home from U.K. to Ireland via the north to avoid following the rules.

If you think I was purely posting back to you it’s probably because of how disgusting your suggestion to get around essential travel was.

seashells11 · 03/06/2021 18:04

I wish you'd stop attacking Emerald, you've made your point now. She was trying to be helpful, showing empathy because I was worried....maybe not the best idea, but time to let it go please.

triceratopsmama · 03/06/2021 18:59

@sharksarecool we certainly do not view GB as the same country and it's extremely offensive to suggest so.
@postitgirl please don't do what you are thinking of, the vaccine rollout here is slow. We are only just starting to emerge from lockdown.
You won't be welcomed by anybody except your family. There are only a small number of cases of the latest variant here. We need to keep it that way.
Please stay where you are.

Phial · 04/06/2021 19:15

Thanks for this thread. Can I ask anyone who has travelled to Ireland and done a "get out of quarantine" test on Day 5, how long did it take to get the results? Same day, next day, longer? Trying to work out if it will be worth a trip for me (visit elderly relative, not "essential" but definitely needed).

I had the day 5 test yesterday morning and got the result at lunchtime today.
Phial · 05/06/2021 17:32

Thanks, Peridot.

MissingCoffeeandWine · 08/06/2021 08:18

@Phial HSE test done post 6pm on a Tuesday, results back by 9am on the Thursday BUT I believe ours took longer as there is difficulty using an English phone number in the automated system. We were told average wait is 24 hours.

Peridot1 · 08/06/2021 09:16

That’s odd @MissingCoffeeandWine - I’m on a UK mobile number too and no issues here. I’ve had a few texts from the HSE and Gov.ie no problem. My test booking confirmation and result came through fine.

Pickledpenguin · 08/06/2021 09:33

Threads like this make me shake my head in despair. Please OP just wait a little while longer. Let us get vaccinated.

DoverCliffs · 08/06/2021 13:41

Just curious, does anyone think the rules will be relaxed enough from the 19th of July that fully vaccinated people from the UK will be able to travel to the Republic of Ireland?
I presume a PCR test will still be required.
