I cant work out the travel restrictions between UK and Ireland

Do I need a PCR test to get into the republic? Do I need to quarantine? I keep reading the gov sites, and then at the end it says 'except Ireland or the Common Travel Area'. I don't understand!!!!!

KissMeLittleAss - you don't need a test to come here, but you will need to take a test before returning to Ireland and to quarantine on your return.

Having made the trip from the UK to Ireland a few times over this past year - you are allowed to travel to Ireland if you're looking after an elderly relative, particularly one who is living along like my 87 year old dad - they are VERY strict about the rules over there. I haven't been able to leave my dad's house on any of my trips over there, with the exception of getting to and from the airport. But I'm very glad I went and it made a big difference to my dad's mental wellbeing too.

I think travel restrictions have loosened somewhat across the country, but when I went, the police were stopping all cars on the motorway asking for details of why you were travelling at all.

seashells11 · 03/06/2021 12:15

But how the heck can I prove I'm needed for temporary childcare at my dds? Confused Would they take my word for it? (worried)

EmeraldShamrock · 03/06/2021 12:43

@seashells11 Ring citizens advice.
Which airport are you flying from? Check the death notice in the UK say you're flying for a funeral.
I genuinely think flying back is an issue not flying out.
Don't worry you'll get there.
My niece's and friends have been travelling to NI without hassle they're wee witches.
If you are worried you can fly from Belfast Airport.

seashells11 · 03/06/2021 13:22

Thank you EmeraldShamrock don't know if I'm brave enough to say funeral though, what if they check? Would they?? It's Dublin airport.

alwayswithhope · 03/06/2021 13:34

It’s so disgusting to use some poor families bereavement to facilitate a trip over. I can’t believe this was even suggested, never mind a poster considering it. Have you no shame.

I have had to travel between U.K. and Ireland for a medical procedure. Going to U.K. there’s no restriction at all. Coming to Ireland you need a PCR test valid within 72 hours of your arrival. You need to fill in a passenger locator form and you should only be travelling for an essential reason. There are guards at the airport to check. You then need to quarantine for 5 days and then call to arrange a free PCR test which once you have a negative result you are free to go about as normal.

Ireland is not vaccinated to the extent of the U.K., we are more at risk of another peak of cases of the Indian variant were to multiply here or this Nepalese variant enter the country. So yes you can go via Northern Ireland and avoid all the rules but they are there to protect Irish people and you all supposedly have Irish family members you care about??? So why would you take that risk. I was told to avoid quarantine and go via north and I actually live near the border but even if there were no rules I’d be quarantining anyway and wanting a negative test before mixing in society - I don’t want to cause an outbreak or infect anyone I care about. It’s basic decency.

Either come, follow the rules properly. If not wait until our vaccination levels are up and rules changed and then come.

@seashells11 why does your daughter need you for childcare? If it’s for a medical reason then her Gp should be able to provide her with a letter for you.

MegCleary · 03/06/2021 13:37

@Runssometimes was that randox thing for testing pre going to Ireland?
I thought the GP in Ireland was who you contacted for day 5 test to end quarantine?

alwayswithhope · 03/06/2021 13:46

@MegCleary a GP won’t contact you. When you get your text off the government re quarantining there will be link telling you how to organise your after 5 days test. Randox and RocDoc are private so likely where the pre test was done.

MegCleary · 03/06/2021 13:49

@alwayswithhope the pre test will be in the uk.
RocDoc and randoc are the private Irish test providers?
Just trying to see how much we may have to pay for the 5 day test in Ireland.
Already budgeting £396 for the leaving UK PCR test.

alwayswithhope · 03/06/2021 13:52

Hi @MegCleary here’s what I got from gov text when I arrived back.

Due to concerns about COVID-19 variants and as you have travelled from Britain, please arrange a COVID-19 test 5 days after arrival in Ireland. This test is free and available at any test centre, locations see www2.hse.ie/conditions/coronavirus/testing/covid-19-walk-in-test-centres.html You must self-quarantine for 14 days after travel. You may only exit quarantine early when the result of your test is returned and confirmed as not detected

So you shouldn’t have to pay anything for the day 5 test.

No sorry. I don't see what harm it will do.
@seashells11 Okay bad advice from me I doubt you'll have any issue travelling.
Phone your local garda station for clearer information.

MegCleary · 03/06/2021 13:59

@alwayswithhope if I could reach ya, I’d kiss ya. Trip from the arse end of Connemara to Galway city on the cards then for day 5.

EmeraldShamrock · 03/06/2021 14:03

How do you get to the walk in centre if in quarantine?
I'm not convinced the walk in centres will cover traveller's in quarantine afaik it is private companies near airports.

seashells11 · 03/06/2021 14:07

EmeraldShamrock You were only trying to be helpful I know. I'm going to tell the truth, my DD needs help for a month as her usual childcare won't be available. She's got no one else. I just hope the Garda will be ok.

EmeraldShamrock · 03/06/2021 14:09

@seashells11 The gardai may give you a letter. Ring the local station the desk sergeant loves a non crime related chat.
It is an essential journey.

What a sick person you are @EmeraldShamrock how should *@seashells11* find this person she is pretending to know why trawling through the death notices? Would you recommend for maximum avoidance of questions from the guards/airport security that she finds a dead baby or child and passes them off as her dead grandchild? Disgusting.
EmeraldShamrock · 03/06/2021 14:20

@alwayswithhope you're fairly mean yourself calling me sick.
It is hardly a crime.

EmeraldShamrock · 03/06/2021 14:22

No that's your mind. I'd look for someone with great grandchildren mentioned in the death notice.

That’s the reality of what you suggested - sorry if you don’t like how it sounds in reality.

Honestly, online shopping of death notices looking for one to use, passing someone’s grief off as your own, lying about a bereavement, using a tragic situation to your own benefit. Absolutely disgusting.

Killahangilion · 03/06/2021 14:43

Please don’t visit unless absolutely necessary.

Our vaccination programme is still only dealing with ages 50 plus and our health service is even creakier than the NHS, so any serious increase in cases and we’re FUCKED!!!!!!

I haven’t seen our adult children in the U.K. since 2019 and new baby grandchild either, but I not going to put my needs above the interests of the community.

EmeraldShamrock · 03/06/2021 14:59

It was an idea I hardly suggested grave robbing or squeezing sympathy on FB on the back of a stranger.

It says a lot about you as a person IMO. And please to other posters hoping to come to Ireland - do not even consider doing this.
TheKeatingFive · 03/06/2021 15:12

Non essential travel across the border, in both directions, is in full swing now. I know tonnes of people in ROI heading north for the bank holiday. Including me.

So really, it makes no difference. Go through the North and no one is paying attention.

EmeraldShamrock · 03/06/2021 15:22

So you've said.
I was suggesting ways to help a poster worried about visiting her daughter, you've made your point.

@TheKeatingFive It makes a massive difference if people are coming from the U.K. where the Indian variant is rapidly becoming dominant to the Republic of Ireland where vaccination levels are still relatively low and we are trying to avoid a rapidly spreading variant so we don’t have to lockdown again. I mean honestly have people no sense Confused
