You don’t keep hold of borrowed equipment for months and then get defensive when you are asked for it...

We leant someone a piece of equipment worth about £150. One of those things that you don’t need to use often so is a pain to buy, but is certainly worth having. They finished using it ages ago but have had it for months and it has taken 3 requests to get it back. A time for it to be returned has now been rearranged with the comment that they would have brought it back if it was urgent. What about returning something because it’s good manners to return something that’s not yours?

@Eachpeachpears

It's a jet washer isn't it?!
That's what I was thinking.
GordonsAliveAndEatsPies · 01/06/2021 00:58

Ah no it’s not. It’s a piece of specialist garden equipment

I bet it’s broken.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 01/06/2021 02:31

Check their nearest Cash Converters?

malificent7 · 01/06/2021 02:49

What is wrong with all these cheeky fuckers?!

FortunesFave · 01/06/2021 03:09

YANBU but I can never understand why people who start these threads get all coy about saying what it is!

OP...you have nothing to lose by saying "It's a jet washer" rather than calling it a "Specialist piece of equipment" which is just weird!

Barbecue?

Hedge trimmer.

I Ient a friend some baby gear and she gave it back absolutely filthy, hadn't even attempted to clean it. I had given it to her in pristine condition, I've no idea how she even got it that way. I will never ever lend her anything ever again.

Changechangychange · 01/06/2021 03:24

My downstairs neighbour banged on the door asking to borrow my food processor last week (we don’t know him particularly well, my main interaction so far has been him telling me at length that my place of work is a shithole).

We don’t actually own a food processor. He clearly didn’t believe me, and kept on about how he wouldn’t keep it for long, in a way that made me think he definitely would keep it for long. Very odd.

Because people get judgmental and it derails the thread?

Hedge trimmer = baby bird killer
Strimmer = what about the butterflies?
BBQ = your poor neighbors. Don’t you care about air quality?

Wannabangbang · 01/06/2021 03:33

And this is why i never lend anything out! So many cheeky beastards

CimCardashian · 01/06/2021 03:55

When is it due back OP so we can all be ready and waiting? 😀

Seriously,if people are going to take the piss fhen they should just buy their own.... I know we all know this!

Kokosrieksts · 01/06/2021 05:26

When I was 10, I lent my favourite book to a friend. Never got it back, but at least got this life lesson in very early.

FortunesFave · 01/06/2021 05:32

CrazyCatsandKittens like when people won't say what their DH's hobby is?

"DH was doing his hobby"

Lots of talk of "doing' a hobby and no mention of what it is! Why can't people just say "DH was playing golf/swimming/at choir practice/dressing up as a woman" or whatever.?

My neighbour knocked and asked for DH's electric razor set! The ones you cut your hair with.

I was so taken aback I said "Ew! No! That's gross!"

Learned the hard way about books. People don't see them as needing to be returned. NDN when I was growing up was bad for this and borrowed books for her 'research'. Only returned when I was babysitting for her. Could see them on her bookshelf so liberated them back home.
muddyford · 01/06/2021 06:51

I lent my DF a book. He was halfway through it and said he would pass it on to my DS. I said no, I would have it back when he had finished it and then I would lend it to her. Cue much huffing and giving the book back to me. I bought him his own copy for Christmas.

I lent my then-vicar a book which was never returned. And of course he moved away.

I have learned my lesson and don't let people borrow my books now.

A few years ago a friend asked to borrow a pair of shoes, they were quite expensive at the time but I agreed. Anyway a while later I asked for them back. She pleaded ignorance and swore she never had the shoes. I decided to forget it as didn’t feel it was worth falling out over. Fast forward a couple of years and on our group chat I ask if anyone has any shoes in that colour that I can borrow. Friend puts on the chat a couple of options including the pair I lent to her!!! Think I’m still in shock now. No I didn’t challenge her but I’ve never lent her a thing since!

Nothing mentioned so far. It’s genuinely unusual because my DH has the whole range of trimmers, saws and the suchlike so alongside other threads could be quite outing.

This morning.... let’s see what happens huh...

You should only have to ask for it back once

Gothichouse40 · 01/06/2021 09:27

The saying Never a borrower or a lender be, may be old fashioned, but it's certainly true.

Weenurse · 01/06/2021 09:31

Oh, well, you know Sod's law is they will return it this morning and the thread will have been for nothing.
GordonsAliveAndEatsPies · 01/06/2021 09:45

@CrazyCatsAndKittens Not really. I said in the OP that a tine had been arranged. It has still been months and she was still narky about returning it as if she was doing us a favour.
