Driving without a license with baby in car

Driverdilemma · 30/05/2021 23:35

Basically, someone I know is driving without a license. She has just bought a car and started driving lessons but doesn't want to wait for passing her test. She is 6 months pregnant and has a 1 year old in the car with her. Her mum, who also doesn't have a license, condones this and lets her daughter ferry her around as well. They say it's the norm, that everyone does this before they pass their test. Her mum found the concern funny and laughed. The way I see it is she is putting her child and unborn baby at risk. She is also putting other drivers at risk. In my opinion she is being monumentally stupid and selfish. She is never going to listen to any sense, she is a law student so knows the facts. WIBU to report it? Or is it none of my business?

Unlicenced, probably untaxed and most definitely uninsured.

Crimestoppers or 111.

MrsFlinch · 31/05/2021 00:46

I want to know who the 7% of people are that voted Yabu, Who in their right mind would think this is ok?

Yes I’d be reporting ASAP.

BlackeyedSusan · 31/05/2021 00:50

as an aside, I had my second when my first child was still one. (23 months) It is fairly normal to have about two year gap.

but yes, yanbu.

MilduraS · 31/05/2021 01:01

Absolutely report. Even though it's not your fault, it would be hard to get over the guilt if something happened to her children or someone else.

OhRene · 31/05/2021 01:09

Report it. At worst she could kill people. And at best she could end up costing someone a fortune as there's no possibility of her actually being insured.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 31/05/2021 01:36

Please report.

I nearly died in a crash thanks to an irresponsible driver who had no business being in charge of a car.

It's such a disgustingly selfish thing to do, x1000 having a baby in the car.

Reporting is the responsible thing to do.

JellyTumble · 31/05/2021 05:30

You absolutely need to report it ASAP.

LaBellina · 31/05/2021 05:34

Report her. I think SS and the police will both by interested in this. She’s being incredibly selfish and irresponsible.

SofiaAmes · 31/05/2021 05:34

The police will probably pass it on to social services as well as it's also child endangerment for an unlicensed driver to drive a child.

torquewench · 31/05/2021 05:40

"She is a law student so knows the facts". Like the fact shes going to ruin any future legal career before it even starts if she continues with this behaviour. Report her, shes an unbelievably stupid, selfish idiot.

OneMamaAndHerGirl · 31/05/2021 06:10

@VictoriaLudorum

It is a licenCe with a C. The verb is "to license". As in licensed to kill. However, this is totally wrong and you would be doing your public duty in reporting it.
There’s always one.

Fortunately if you are smacked by an uninsured driver, you don't fork out. We were and the car was totalled by an uninsured driver (who was also pissed as a fart!). It was all sorted by my insurance company, who paid out. Somewhere along the line the Motor Insurers Bureau got involved. We were never out of pocket though, but I know they went after the uninsured twat for all the costs.

GillianAnderson · 31/05/2021 06:34

No licence so therefore insurance void. A provisional licence holder also has to have a full licence holder in the car

Report to local police with registration and address, car make and model

Ppl like these two are a big reason premiums go up every year

endofthelinefinally · 31/05/2021 06:39

A friend of mine was seriously injured and left permanently disabled by an uninsured, unlicensed driver. It took years to get any criminal injuries compensation (tax payers' money). It is really selfish, dangerous behaviour.

So sorry to hear about your freind. I'm not sure when it happened, but you have 3 years 4 months to make a personal injury claim. The Motor Insurance Bureau deal with any injuries caused by uninsured and untraced drivers, and are funded by a group of insurance companies - it may be something your freind is entitled too and ensures that they are correctly compensated for life changing injuries.

Couldn't agree more about how selfish and irresponsible that this behaviour is, but just can't believe people have the audacity to do it.

Billandben444 · 31/05/2021 07:13

Report it asap. Holding a driving licence is not only a legal requirement but it also proves you've passed a theory and practical test which means you know how to drive. It's what the licence represents that's important. If she got pulled for a random check after alerting an ANPR camera she'd get a rightly-deserved bollocking with kids in the car as well as points on any future licence. I'd try and report her anonymously and include where the car lives if possible as a traffic cop will lie in wait. It's the fact she hasn't learnt how to drive safely that makes her such a danger on the road.

Thebookswereherfriends · 31/05/2021 07:15

You could point out that if she got caught and convicted then she would find hard to use her law degree in a professional capacity as she would have a criminal record.

MaMaD1990 · 31/05/2021 07:33

Just taking a slightly different view on this - if you report her, her potential career will be down the toilet. Yes you are right that she shouldn't be doing this and it would technically be her own fault if she did lose any job prospects on the back of you reporting her, but can you not warn her before? As in, "I know you're driving around with no licence with your kid in the back, it's dangerous and you need to stop or someone/I will report you". If you're not friends and you aren't worried about a breakdown in friendship, could you not give her the opportunity to stop being so stupid?

InTheDrunkTank · 31/05/2021 07:35

WTAF? I only know two people who have driven before passing their test. One was bipolar in a manic phase the other was just a petty criminal in general. It is not normal and she could cause an accident and endanger the rest of us who chose to wait until we were legally allowed to drive.

DeathByWalkies · 31/05/2021 07:37

Jesus.

OP don't apologise.

Jumpingintosummer · 31/05/2021 07:41

Call the police, tell them what you can about the car, her address, nursery etc. Before she kills someone.

ApolloandDaphne · 31/05/2021 07:41

I would report this. She is being so stupid and could cause an accident.

TheatricalGiraffe · 31/05/2021 07:45

Report it. She could kill someone!

Plus i'm sure she'd be the first one crying when (not if) she gets into an accident and has absolutely no recourse to get any payout (her fault or not) because she has no license, no insurance and any payout she does get would be significantly smaller than the fines/potential jail time she might face..

Pemberleys · 31/05/2021 07:46

I would report but be aware the potential fallout would be she could not practice law if convicted.
