AIBU to not wee in the hotel kettle?

Summary of events:

  • In hotel room with new(ish) partner.
  • Go to make myself a cup of tea, ask if he wants one.
  • His eyes widen and he yelps 'No! Don't use that! People wee in them!'
  • I have never heard this and say something along the lines of 'What? Why would anyone wee in the kettle? There is an ensuite.'
  • He says that everyone knows you should never use the kettle in your hotel room because people wee in them 'and worse'.
  • I tell him I'm going to take my chances and make a cup of tea (although I boil it out once first to be on the safe side).
  • He looks repulsed and says 'I can't believe you're doing that, that's disgusting, I didn't think you were like that' (basically how I'd expect him to react if I actually did a wee (or 'worse') in the hotel kettle myself.
  • We go out later for an after-dinner walk and he points at a dog poo and says 'look, there's your dessert.'
  • We are getting ready for bed and he picks up kettle and asks me if I want a cup of wee to take to bed.

So, question, in case you haven't guessed: is weeing into the hotel kettle 'a thing' (in which case IABU for making a cup of tea in what is essentially a toilet) or is my partner being weirdly OTT about this? Girls group chat theories have so far ranged from he's an extreme germophobe (red flag) to he's testing my reaction because he's 'into' poo and wee related 'activities' (also a red flag) to he wees in hotel kettles himself (also a red flag).

The only non-red flag is that he's right and people are weeing into their hotel kettles left right and centre which would be a a green flag for him but a red flag for the rest of society. I'm not really sure what outcome I'm hoping for here. Help me out?

I'm currently sitting in my hotel bed with a cup of tea!

WingingItSince1973 · 31/05/2021 20:55

Why are those who clean hotel rooms not adhering to minimum basic hygiene rules. To me you're part of the problem if you are claiming to clean cups in dirty sinks and use dirty towels to dry them! I've been a cleaner in the past, private and commercial and I wouldn't dream of washing up like this its revolting

Roxy69 · 31/05/2021 20:57

Be quick, save yourself and don't wait around for any more weirdness from this chap.

OverByYer · 31/05/2021 20:58

I genuinely expected the cups to be put through a dishwasher and replaced same as the glasses in the bathroom as they are usually wrapped in cellophane

GoodEnough1 · 31/05/2021 21:06

I’ve heard of people boiling their underwear in them which put me off a bit. Now I’m totally put off. Have no idea if either are true, never done it myself. I do always pre-boil just in case but won’t need to any more as won’t be using hotel kettle. Trouble with urban myths is people might do it just for the hell of it so it becomes true. Maybe I’m over-thinking it ...

@NicknamesAreLikeKleenex first thing I thought was “he’s watched the last episode of inside no. 9” Grin

Trinacham · 31/05/2021 21:15

Definitely heard this before but never really believed it. I'm sure it's probably happened at some point though..

KarmaNoMore · 31/05/2021 21:17

I genuinely expected the cups to be put through a dishwasher and replaced same as the glasses in the bathroom as they are usually wrapped in cellophane

Of the cellophane is sealed they would be clean but if they are just wrapped plastic bags, they may not.

Big hotel chains may have the facilities to wash and seal all cups before they go back to the rooms but B&Bs and AirB&Bs won’t.

I helped someone who had a good number of properties rented as airB&Bs and fantastically positive reviews... we were always having an argument because he didn’t have any hesitation on not changing the bedsheets is they appeared clean, glasses and cups were rinsed with water only as there was never fairy to wash them(same would go for bed linen if we missed the laundry). And he totally refused to use bleach based products to clean the bathrooms despite them being shared by many people. I dread to thing what people could have caught if they decided to have a bath.

Ditch him quick. Either all 3 red flags apply, or he's simply unhinged. Anyway, he's bad news.

nannykatherine · 31/05/2021 21:25

I boiled an egg in a hotel kettle once ..
Starving travel nanny situation..

The answer to this problem is to have a Milton tablet with you and sterilse said kettle ..
Something travel nannies always have !

If it helps (it won't) I have a friend who used to work in the most upmarket department store in Glasgow City centre. One of his colleagues took great delight in peeing in the kettles before they were sold (I'm assuming he emptied them out, but still...). As a student, I had a weekend job in a posh(ish) women's clothing store and had a customer try on jeans while not wearing any underwear. People are disgusting; ignorance is bliss and our immune systems are wonderful!

My DH didn't know that asking for an 'extra pillow' meant ordering a prostitute.

He has a degree in Hospitality Management.

vikmc87 · 31/05/2021 21:46

Did he watch inside no.9 last week? This was on that

DadAManger · 31/05/2021 22:21

Naturally, I’ve peed in a kettle (i remember accidentally boiling it the next day) but I can’t fit the life of me remember when or where! I would never do that in a hotel though. Maybe I was drunk, but my mind is like a sieve now...

EnidPrunehat · 31/05/2021 22:25

Why wee in a kettle when it is so much easier to wee in the wardrobe or out of the window? Or, for that matter, in the toilet that has been provided for exclusive use in every hotel room since about 1965?

Sounds unhinged in a somewhat fetishy manner if you ask me.

Morgysmum · 31/05/2021 22:28

I have never heard of that.
I love cups of tea, so always use the kettle in hotels. But you bolied it once first, so that would take care of that.
I would say, red flag on him.

pollymere · 31/05/2021 22:38

People use kettles in hotel rooms for wees, cooking food, cleaning underwear...

However, if you boil it with clean water then put fresh water in, you'll be fine. He's just being annoying. Don't think there's a hidden agenda 😂

pollymere · 31/05/2021 22:39

@MirandaMarple I've also asked this...to get an extra pillow.

LouLou198 · 31/05/2021 22:43

Never heard of this, but next time I stay in a hotel I will be packing my own mugs and the travel kettle!

Localocal · 31/05/2021 22:51

It doesn't sound like you are compatible in terms of risk tolerance. And he sounds like a vindictive prick who is happy to belittle you. Run away.

Mildred007 · 31/05/2021 23:48

For those of you who have worked in hotels and have experienced kettles having been used for disgusting things such as finding wee, poo, sick or other dirty stuff in them. Surely they don't just get rinsed out and left?! Do they not get binned?? I know if I worked in a hotel and found this I'd have to bin it, there is absolutely no way I'd "clean it" or leave it for the next guest to use?! Envy

ChocolateAlpro · 01/06/2021 00:18

I have heard of this but can’t imagine why they’d do it except being drunk and too lazy to get out of bed. Even worse is that patients in hospital often wee in the water jugs when they can’t get to the loo fast enough. 🤢

Duemarch2021 · 01/06/2021 00:19

I'd not heard of it... i dont think he's being horrible though, maybe just trying to be funny as you're in a new relationship... on a separate note though how disgusting are humans! I wouldn't put it past anyone to be honest ..
