AIBU to not wee in the hotel kettle?

Summary of events:

  • In hotel room with new(ish) partner.
  • Go to make myself a cup of tea, ask if he wants one.
  • His eyes widen and he yelps 'No! Don't use that! People wee in them!'
  • I have never heard this and say something along the lines of 'What? Why would anyone wee in the kettle? There is an ensuite.'
  • He says that everyone knows you should never use the kettle in your hotel room because people wee in them 'and worse'.
  • I tell him I'm going to take my chances and make a cup of tea (although I boil it out once first to be on the safe side).
  • He looks repulsed and says 'I can't believe you're doing that, that's disgusting, I didn't think you were like that' (basically how I'd expect him to react if I actually did a wee (or 'worse') in the hotel kettle myself.
  • We go out later for an after-dinner walk and he points at a dog poo and says 'look, there's your dessert.'
  • We are getting ready for bed and he picks up kettle and asks me if I want a cup of wee to take to bed.

So, question, in case you haven't guessed: is weeing into the hotel kettle 'a thing' (in which case IABU for making a cup of tea in what is essentially a toilet) or is my partner being weirdly OTT about this? Girls group chat theories have so far ranged from he's an extreme germophobe (red flag) to he's testing my reaction because he's 'into' poo and wee related 'activities' (also a red flag) to he wees in hotel kettles himself (also a red flag).

The only non-red flag is that he's right and people are weeing into their hotel kettles left right and centre which would be a a green flag for him but a red flag for the rest of society. I'm not really sure what outcome I'm hoping for here. Help me out?

I'm sure I'm being super thick, but please tell.me what's a waffle stomp?

Doing a poo in the shower and stamping it down through the (often waffle-shaped) drain. It takes all sorts, apparently....

I worked for an airline and many crew of a certain nationality used to cook food such as noodles in the kettle and also boil their knickers. I always sniffed the kettle to see if I had a “noodle kettle” and several times it was the case. Usually more the water warmer types than the British type of kettle. Usually more of an issue outside Europe tbh.

My ex-husband used to do that. Just one of the many reasons he is my ex.

BrumCahoots · 31/05/2021 19:24

He sounds a knob .. put him in the bin ... but after reading this thread I'm never making tea in a hotel room ever again !

I have heard of it, and once found a cigarette butt in one.

I worked at a school once where we had a mysterious message to shut our classroom doors until further notice and keep kids in the room.

Very strange.

Senior pupils had weed in their common room kettle and boiled it. The stench was awful but the janitor had sent the e-Mail as he thought we might die of ammonia fumes.

In which case a closed, ill-fitting classroom door is really going to save lives.

Maybe said group of pupils now roam the land pissing in kettles.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/05/2021 19:31

Yes I've heard of this and so when staying in a hotel I always make my bedtime hot chocolate in the chamber pot, using hot water from the shower.

An interesting side note - a Corby Trouser press can produce a mediocre but reasonably-edible peice of toast.

Shoxfordian · 31/05/2021 19:39

He sounds like a weirdo
I especially don’t like how he kept bringing it up after you had the audacity to carry on doing something he clearly disapproved of
Red flags

I'm staying in a hotel right now, here for 4 nights, and I refuse to use the kettle because I read on here a couple of years ago that people wee in them...and boil their knickers in them!

Haven't been able to use a hotel kettle since.

Gbtch · 31/05/2021 19:49

Take your own kettle forevermore! God that’s disgusting

Dear lord never heard of this before, how sheltered? Worked as a housekeeper at a well known chain, relatively low cost, every room has new cups no cross contamination with cleaning cloths etc intact cleaner than a local posh hotel we stayed in!

Sounds like a right odd ball. If anyone has come across cooking in kettles, well the previous guest will have once been staying at her majesty's pleasure iykwim 😉

Cameleongirl · 31/05/2021 20:03

Someone well-known on TV had admitted doing this in the past as he knew certain other celebs would be staying in the hotel the day after him. I’m not saying who it is, but I bet some MN’er’s know...😄

HSHorror · 31/05/2021 20:13

Blood needs rinsing in cold water and maybe soap. So boiling period knickers is not the way to go. Also if i wanted boiling hot then put plug in bath (maybe sink) and use kettle water.
Also ive been thinking for a while 50/50 ratio men to women is really too high.

dogsdinnerlady · 31/05/2021 20:14

As long at the water's boiled...?

Moonwhite · 31/05/2021 20:19

He might be right, but to make a running thing of it - he sounds like hard work. Proceed with caution.

Jabba2020 · 31/05/2021 20:20

I have heard this and boil and chuck twice before I use a kettle. I did stay in a hotel years ago and someone had used the kettle as an ashtray and the cleaners had not noticed. Makes me extra careful now.

Passenger42 · 31/05/2021 20:23

He has done it himself with his mates hence his comments. Time to dump the immature loser. Anyone who points to a dog turd and says dessert on a weekend break, I have no words..

mynameisbiggles · 31/05/2021 20:28

He sounds a bit of knob to me. Frankly you'd smell it if the previous room occupant had taken a piss in the kettle. If the kettle smells fresh then its going o be okay to boil water. We always boil a kettle and use the boiling water to wash the cups first, then a second boil to make the tea.

Mexico1986 · 31/05/2021 20:31

I think he's the one to dump!

Enroljas · 31/05/2021 20:33

We live among skanky people 🤮 Which is why I always take a travel kettle with me when going away. Fortunately most people have been brought up with acceptable “norms and values”.

YANBU OP.

Sunrainsnow · 31/05/2021 20:38

My DH has told me one of his mates has done this. He is well known for getting drunk and doing 'shocking' things. Yes it is repulsive.

I was once staying away on a work course when I found a dirty sock in the bedside table drawer. Being repulsed enough I managed to get it to the bin without touching it. In a conversation with my all male colleagues at the bar later (I worked in an male dominated area) I mentioned the sock to much sniggering. It was then I found out what it had likely been used for. This made me feel incredibly naive and a little bit sick.

Chris08 · 31/05/2021 20:40

I alway make a cuppa.
sounds like it’s something he has actually done himself. (Wee in a kettle)

purplebunny2012 · 31/05/2021 20:43

The extending of the "joke" to the dog poo would absolutely put me off him and I'd be ending the relationship soon after
