AIBU to not wee in the hotel kettle?

Summary of events:

  • In hotel room with new(ish) partner.
  • Go to make myself a cup of tea, ask if he wants one.
  • His eyes widen and he yelps 'No! Don't use that! People wee in them!'
  • I have never heard this and say something along the lines of 'What? Why would anyone wee in the kettle? There is an ensuite.'
  • He says that everyone knows you should never use the kettle in your hotel room because people wee in them 'and worse'.
  • I tell him I'm going to take my chances and make a cup of tea (although I boil it out once first to be on the safe side).
  • He looks repulsed and says 'I can't believe you're doing that, that's disgusting, I didn't think you were like that' (basically how I'd expect him to react if I actually did a wee (or 'worse') in the hotel kettle myself.
  • We go out later for an after-dinner walk and he points at a dog poo and says 'look, there's your dessert.'
  • We are getting ready for bed and he picks up kettle and asks me if I want a cup of wee to take to bed.

So, question, in case you haven't guessed: is weeing into the hotel kettle 'a thing' (in which case IABU for making a cup of tea in what is essentially a toilet) or is my partner being weirdly OTT about this? Girls group chat theories have so far ranged from he's an extreme germophobe (red flag) to he's testing my reaction because he's 'into' poo and wee related 'activities' (also a red flag) to he wees in hotel kettles himself (also a red flag).

The only non-red flag is that he's right and people are weeing into their hotel kettles left right and centre which would be a a green flag for him but a red flag for the rest of society. I'm not really sure what outcome I'm hoping for here. Help me out?

@ThinWomansBrain

given that it's rare to have a hotel room without an ensuite, why would you, why would anyone? Maybe it was a thing when it was more common for B&B type places to have shared bathrooms?
I don't think it is need, it is more like doing a deliberate act of vandalism
omgthepain · 31/05/2021 17:02

Hat sounds ridiculous I've never heard such nonesense in my entire life

You say "newish" partner he sounds a nutjob
I would get rid of him

Minstrelsgetinmybelly · 31/05/2021 17:07

I have heard of people doing both numbers in kettles so we always boil it a few times we use a hotel kettle. He isn’t completely off his rocker

Not sure if it was a fun but a friend of a friend once said about finding a poop in the kettle when they worked as a cleaner.

AmyDudley · 31/05/2021 17:21

Not sure if this is true or not - but he sounds like a knob for going on about it (the dog poo/dessert comment would have had me turning round and not going out with him that evening)

As an aside, my XH once came home drunk and vomited in the slow cooker, then put the lid back on and by the next day had forgotten he'd done it. Happy days eh ?

LoverOfAllThingsPurple · 31/05/2021 17:22

I once read the stories from hotel cleaners. One lady said she used to pee in the cups, tip it out, not rinse them and let them dry.

GiftedFish · 31/05/2021 17:28

What!? I can honestly say I've never heard this, but do make tea in hotel kettles and have never wee'd in one.

What kind of feral child points at a dog poo and say "there's your dessert".. odd

Bertiebiscuit · 31/05/2021 17:29

Sorry but he is a bit of a nutter - kick him to the kerb - I don't believe people really do this, he's a bit warped to put it mildly.

Kittykaboodle · 31/05/2021 17:30

Time to get rid of him, he’s like a small child!

masterblaster · 31/05/2021 17:30

I hadn’t realised that weeing in the kettle was allowed. Thanks for letting me know!

Surlyburd · 31/05/2021 17:30

I've never heard of this. How weird!

UltraMK · 31/05/2021 17:32

For what it's worth, if he said this recently, the show Room 9 on BBC mentioned this in an episode in the past month.
He might have seen that episode :)

avocadont · 31/05/2021 17:35

@HemanOrSheRa

How does he feel about sleeping in a bed that hundreds of people have slept in before him?! Grin
and 'worse'
bondgirl76 · 31/05/2021 17:36

Think he would be my x partner...weirdo...

Loulablake · 31/05/2021 17:43

If it was a cheap hotel and If there wasn’t an on suite, stag location etc I’d be less reluctant to use the kettle. But a premier in or actual hotel then I’d make a brew.

RachaelN · 31/05/2021 17:44

Don't know about the wee part but your new partner sounds like a bit of a dck.

meganorks · 31/05/2021 17:44

Yeah, he pisses in kettles!

CookL · 31/05/2021 17:46

And had sex in !!!

Booksandwine80 · 31/05/2021 17:46

How long have you been seeing him?! He sounds like a massive dickhead Grin

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 31/05/2021 17:48

Never heard of it.
He sounds like a dingbat

LH1987 · 31/05/2021 17:52

Does he urinate in a kettle maybe?

Crystalgirl90 · 31/05/2021 17:54

Have never heard of this ever 🤣 he sounds crazy

me4real · 31/05/2021 17:56

YANBU that's mental, as you had an ensuite.

I suppose people might if they didn't have an ensuite (though I've never heard of it) but not if there is one I wouldn'tve thought.

He sounds a bit unhinged. When he said the poo was your dessert, was it said in a nasty way, or a joking way?

Richconstance · 31/05/2021 18:00

I'm sure I'm being super thick, but please tell.me what's a waffle stomp?

These stories are so gross, I used to travel for work and ALWAYS used the kettle TO MAKE TEA and have never heard of any of these horror stories!

Other than the Kevin bridges joke about someone taking a shit in a kettle at an empty.... Grin

I must be so beige/vanilla - never heard of any if this! (Or blissfully ignorant) Smile

Maximum71 · 31/05/2021 18:01

He sounds like someone I dated for 2 years - I bet he will never ever let it drop that you once made yourself wee to drink.. I'd get rid of him. Grin

MollyMinniesMum · 31/05/2021 18:01

I think he is probably in the same FB group as me. People wish their pants in, vomit, pee, cook tinned sausages etc etc in them APPARENTLY. I wouldn’t use one either
