Not happy with hairdresser

First time getting baylage in my hair and I showed pictures and explicitly said “I do not want it light. I want darkest brown on my hair”. I even showed picture I hated and he understood I want the sections dark not light. I well I’ve come home with really light brown /blonde/ gingery sections in my hair! He even admitted it was very light and has offered me to come back next week and he will fix it. I know it’s not a huge deal in Scheme of things but is this what can happen? Not really much experience of colouring my hair. Got done from large chain of hairdressers well known, do things like this happen when colouring your hair? I thought I was safe as I showed him exactly what I wanted and what I definitely didn’t want and what I’ve come home with is what I didn’t want!

Oh god, Toni and Guy are appalling.

Much better finding a good independent hairdresser than a crap high street chain

An0n0n0n · 30/05/2021 19:00

If it was a mistake you shouldn't need to pay to get it corrected.

Wss ypur black hair a box dye? Did yu have a strand test?

Londontown12 · 30/05/2021 19:01

@Kitkat214 toner glossed over both the same !! It shouldn’t take to long a shampoo toner and conditioner (I would not pay either ) it’s their mistake I would not charge an unhappy client xx

It looks like what you wanted is low lights, so a brown/darker reddish dye placed through in a similar way to bleached highlights.

I don't think what you have ended up with is that bad, but that's irrelevant, if you showed him the second picture as what you wanted and you came out with the first then he hasn't looked or listened. In my opinion the salon should fix at no additional cost to you

Mellonsprite · 30/05/2021 19:07

It looks really nice 👍🏻

angieloumc · 30/05/2021 19:10

I think you should put a photo of your actual hair on if you want advice. However the first photo is very nice albeit not your hair.
You also shouldn't be paying for him to fix it so I would insist that you don't when you go back.

lavenderandwisteria · 30/05/2021 19:13

I think that was the OPs hair.

sunglassesonthetable · 30/05/2021 19:14

I think you should get what YOU want at a Salon. Not just what they happen to do.

You shouldn't be paying for fixes. If you're going to pay I'd want someone who wasn't going to get it wrong again.

saying that I thought the first photo looked really pretty.

But you paid - you get to choose.

Killahangilion · 30/05/2021 19:16

He shouldn’t charge you to fix it because he made a mistake by using a stronger bleach mix than required. That is a serious error of judgement on his part.

The other problem is that he will put a toner on it that’s darker and it will fix the colour and will be lovely, but only temporarily. The toner colour will wash out leaving the gingery tones behind.

Did he insist on you having a skin/patch test a few days beforehand too? If not, that’s serious error number two...!

ToughLoveLDN · 30/05/2021 19:24

I really like the warmer pieces. But don’t worry. It’s an easy fix, he just needs to tone it down so it’s not so bright and contrasting.

I will say that this is why you don’t go to chain hairdressers as the receptionists are encouraged to overbook the stylists hence why there was no time to fix it. A toner only takes 15 minutes.

BigHeadBertha · 30/05/2021 19:24

Well that's not right. However, personally, think it looks gorgeous. I like it much better than the one you wanted. Anyway, it looks like the hairdresser left the bleach on too long.

For right now, I'd go out and buy a box of temporary or semi-permanent dye to darken it myself at home. That may well give you the effect you wanted.

Then I'd request a refund from the manager or owner of the shop, if you want to mess with it. If not, I'd move on to a different hairdresser next time. I would not pay them to correct their mistake.

I can second this. And RUSH are even worse. I used to work for them. Treat their staff like crap, barely pay them and expect you to work ridiculous hours. And over charge clients!
BigHeadBertha · 30/05/2021 19:26

Also, they did more damage than just something that needs a color correction. Bleach is hard on the hair so in overdoing it, they caused unnecessary damage. It's likely the overbleached ends will need more frequent cutting now.

HaveringWavering · 30/05/2021 19:29

Slight thread hijack here so first, OP, what you got looks nice but agree not what you asked for but sounds like it can be fixed, which is great.

I had balayage for the second time in my life yesterday. I’d had years and years of foil highlights but with them finally having grown out during lockdown I thought I’d try something a bit more subtle and lower maintenance. I remembered balayage about 10 years ago where the hairdresser very gently painted bleach through my hair. Nice and relaxing I thought…OMG I was so wrong. This one back combed each section of my hair before applying the bleach and it was effing agony. I had tears down my cheeks from the pain (despite telling her it hurt) and at the end my hair was all matted and tangled so it took the junior ages to get it smooth after washing out the toner. Even with a tangle teezer and a shedload of detangling stuff. Today my scalp is still tender. The colour is pretty meh too.

Is this what balayage is always like?! The salon I went to is not a chain, but it is at the more expensive end and gets rave reviews for its colour work.

moovinon · 30/05/2021 19:35

It looks really, really nice.

I prefer it to the pic you wanted x

misspattylacosta · 30/05/2021 19:43

@callmemaybee

He said he’ll fix it next week so just be patient and chill

It’s a non issue really as he said he will sort it

Actually it IS an issue. The OP spent a fortune and didn't get what she wanted, and wasn't warned if it was not possible. Not acceptable.

But yes, if the hairdresser offered to fix it, not much else to do than wait.

OP, I am sorry you did not get what you wanted, but if it's like the 1st photo, it does look really nice. Just think of it as a change and enjoy it until you go back!

absolutely.

And if your request is not reasonable or possible, they should tell you.

Enko · 30/05/2021 19:55

@HaveringWavering

Is this what balayage is always like?

No I am not in pain during or after when I have had it done.

Thanks. Do they back comb the hair?

Flygirl94 · 30/05/2021 20:03

@HaveringWavering that’s foliage, it gets a brighter lift than balayage but same type of outcome

endoflevelbaddy · 30/05/2021 20:07

I've just had quite a subtle balayage (more caramel on dark brown) but yes, did back comb gently to get the blend, otherwise you end up with a harsh line where it transitions. Not an issue brushing out again though and certainly not painful.

OP - you categorically should not be paying for it fixing. Hairdresser has cocked and knows it, and invited you back to correct it. That's not at your expense.

MadeForThis · 30/05/2021 20:26

I like how yours has turned out.

BedknobsNoBroomsticks · 30/05/2021 20:37

OP specifically stated that the photo was NOT her hair. I don't think anyone can judge your hair unless you post a photo of it.

lavenderandwisteria · 30/05/2021 21:05

But it’s not what we think of it, it’s what OP thinks. If she doesn’t like it and didn’t ask for it then she’s within her rights to ask them to sort it.
