Using God/Christ in negative threads

Tigertalk · 30/05/2021 09:00

Hi all, I’m a long time mumsnetter but finding it hard to read constant threads (as a Christian) that use phrases starting with ‘ for G*d’s sake ( insert some nasty phrase about something) . We don’t accept racist or phobic language so why is it okay to use God, Jesus, Christ etc in these contexts? It’s really uncomfortable to read constantly 🙁

OP posts:
JemimaJoy · 30/05/2021 17:24

I agree with you OP!

We don´t accept anyone discriminating against, mocking, or using hate speech against anyone except Christians.

It´s okay though. According to the bible, this is more or less how it´s supposed to be. X

JemimaJoy · 30/05/2021 17:25

As much as I try to be accepting of everyone, I´m raising my eyebrows slightly at the comments from other so called Christians on here who clearly ... aren´t really Christians?

JemimaJoy · 30/05/2021 17:28

@Orchidflower1

Totally with you *@Tigertalk*
Sorry, my previous post was really dramatic because I was basically just referring to this post.
JemimaJoy · 30/05/2021 17:30

@wildeverose

I'm a Christian- it's not even close to racist or homophobic language. It's shockingly offensive you've compared the two.
Oops! I mean this one.

Because any Christian would claim that it´s better to insult God?

murbblurb · 30/05/2021 17:31

The word 'god' is not hard speech against anyone. Those who think it is have obviously never come across actual hate speech.

Your religion isn't sacred to anyone else. Do you worry that Jews or Muslims will be upset because you eat a bacon sandwich near them? Of course not, why should you.

murbblurb · 30/05/2021 17:32

Hate speech not hard speech. Sorry.

pointythings · 30/05/2021 17:33

My household consists exclusively of people who are either female, trans or gay, or a combination of the three. I'll make a deal with OP - when the religious the world over stop indulging in the oppression of everyone in my household, I'll stop it with the religiously based swearing. OK?

BigHeadBertha · 30/05/2021 17:34

I'm just glad when they don't say "motherfucker." Eeeek!

IAmFleshIAmBone · 30/05/2021 17:43

Well race and sexuality are based on material reality. Your religious deity is not. So no, it's not comparable.

Custardo · 30/05/2021 17:44
@Custardo

the official religion of England is protestant - Christian

In what way, “official”?
Oh yes! This is a word I can never ever get on with. It makes me sick to the stomach. I can't get past that they are basically calling someone a practitioner of incest who fucks their own mum! That is a disturbing visual image on any level. Who on earth would think it's cool to say someone has sex with own mother?
NavigatingAdolescence · 30/05/2021 17:47

Anything a bit more recent to reference than the 1800s? I mean, society may have seen some changes in 200 or so years.

@JemimaJoy have I reading this right? Are you seriously sitting here telling us that the actual crimes of racism and homophopia are less offensive than insulting your chosen God?

www.archbishopofcanterbury.org/archbishop-lords

The Archbishop of Canterbury is a senior member of the House of Lords, the second chamber of the United Kingdom Parliament.

He sits as one of the 26 bishops of the Church of England, who are known as the Lords Spiritual. The bishops are all independent members, and each speaks and votes on matters of particular interest or concern to them.

NavigatingAdolescence · 30/05/2021 18:04

I know. But I’d suggest that apart from a significant number of bank holidays set around Christian (stolen from the pagans) festivals the church actually has next to no influence over the majority of U.K. citizens in 2021.

I can promise you the Church in Wales affects not a single second of my life.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 30/05/2021 18:05

Because we live in a historically and culturally Christian country. Christmas is a bank holiday as is Easter

@Nightbear you might want to look into the roots of Christmas and Easter before you call them ‘historically Christian’.

LibertyMole · 30/05/2021 18:05

I can’t believe people need evidence that the U.K. has an official established church.

Not so much proof. But it depends on your definition of “established” really. A seat in the HoL, whoop de doo.
Lagomaggiore · 30/05/2021 18:07

Totally agree with you OP.

Not 'a seat' but 26 seats. Enough that how they vote can have an impact on bills, allowing them to fight against things like same-sex marriage.

I will say "oh my god!" to the idea that a denomination followed by just over 10% of the population gets a say on whether I can get married in my local town hall.

Againstmachine · 30/05/2021 18:19

*Why should it all be open?

I definitely don’t want my work day taken up with people trying to convert me to various religions or telling me about their sex lives in great detail.*

No one is asking you too it's religious people who think they need to know.

If its taking your work life up then that's on you.

Pathetic theatre

@BigHeadBertha

Pretty sure that just means 'the mother of all fuckers' rather than 'someone who fucks their mum'
SheldonesqueEstDansLaGalaxie · 30/05/2021 18:45

Nanfucker was not the mother of the mother of all fuckers though Grin

Nightbear · 30/05/2021 18:50

I know the roots are pagan. They were made bank holidays because we live in a historically and culturally Christian country.
