New boss or £5k pa pay rise

I’m just interested. I went to an smt conference a few years ago that referenced a study (sorry I can’t reference/evidence it) that said the vast majority of people would rather have a new boss than a 5k pay rise.
Intrigued to know how realistic that is- I’d pay more than that not to have to work for some of my pretty bosses. But equally I’d be horrified if my staff felt the way I do.
I’m wondering if it’s an industry thing or if I’m done with my current job?
Long story short would you rather a £5k pay rise or a new boss please?
If voting is on
Yabu- I love my boss I don’t want £5k
Yanbu- for an extra £5k I’ll put up with it
Anything’s in between will need comments! Thanks loads (and yes I’m struggling with my boss at the moment, hence the question)!

Well, I'd only want a new boss if I hated my job and wanted a new one/new workplace and people.

In my current situation I have two small part-time jobs and I'm perfectly happy with the current boss(es) in each. I'd absolutely love a £5K pay rise though, especially if it was in both jobs!

Ps this hasn’t been through an ethics committee (I’m just nosey) so just rough answers please and inly if it doesn’t overly cost/trigger you

I got a new boss, who is do far good, so I'll take the payrise.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/05/2021 01:55

I'd pay 5K to keep mine. She's wonderful.

I do tend to like my bosses. The only ones I've not in recent years were actively traumatising my colleagues.

Newbi · 26/05/2021 01:56

@Meanderinggently
Weirdly that’s exactly what I was hoping for! That’s what I’m intrigued by, is it an automatic I hate my boss or a value judgment on what’s more important at the time (ie life outside of work?)

Right now, I would take the 5k.

There's have been times where I would have chosen the other option, without hesitation.

Newbi · 26/05/2021 01:59

At the risk of sounding odd- I love these answers- that’s how it should be?!

Bosses tend to move on so I'd take the money.

HerRoyalNotness · 26/05/2021 02:06

I always prefer extra cash, but I’ve only had 2 bosses that I didn’t get in with. In the first instance no one got on with him so I talked to his seniors and was moved on to another project. In the 2nd case I had just started and that first week Friday was my rotated day off, new boss expected me to come
In to work to check something which I duly did, and he called me from his car to I guess ensure I was there. He was a guy that expected staff to work late for spurious reasons and I could not understand why they did.
Thankfully he resigned a week later so I didn’t have to work with him, his replacement was good

Mixitupalot · 26/05/2021 02:08

My team is fab, I’ll take the £5k

However if I hated my boss I’d start looking for another Job & hope the lay rise came with it.

TulisaIsBrill · 26/05/2021 02:19

This is a weird question.

Right now, I'd take the 5k, but there are times in my career where I would definitely have taken a new boss over a 20k rise.

mainsfed · 26/05/2021 07:20

Yabu- I love my boss I don’t want £5k
Yanbu- for an extra £5k I’ll put up with it

The voting is not representative.

What about those of us who love our current boss AND want another £5k?

trilbydoll · 26/05/2021 07:24

I don't think £5k is enough to put up with a boss you don't like! I love my boss, but his boss is a nightmare and honestly I don't think there's an amount of money that adequately compensates for the stress that causes.

ItscoldinAlaska · 26/05/2021 07:27

I'd rather have a new boss than 5k.

My line manager is a nice person, very clever but an absolute crap manager. I have written down how many emails she doesn't answer, it's in the hundreds. I have to wait for her to check my work to send out to our client (who in turn are waiting to do their work) and it takes 7/8 prompts for her to do it as I think she's just completely overwhelmed. There is one piece of work that I sent her 3 weeks ago to sign off and it's still outstanding. I'd rather have someone competent and quick on my current salary than someone who is burying their head in the sand and an extra 5k.

tinseloatcake · 26/05/2021 07:28

I am the boss so I'll have the cash please

CrumbsThatsQuick · 26/05/2021 07:28

Yep, voting doesn't make sense....

Peace43 · 26/05/2021 07:30

I like my boss and I want 5k! I voted YANBU as at my level I rarely speak to my boss and wouldn’t have too much issue if she moved on whereas I could happily spend 5k!!

WillYouDoTheFandango · 26/05/2021 07:32

I like my boss (most of the time like anyone) and I recently did get a pay rise as the company rewarded those who went above and beyond last year.

I have liked all but one of my bosses at my current company and I like that one as a person, we just weren’t a good fit as line report and manager.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/05/2021 07:37

I like my boss and would much rather have a £5k pay rise!

FeelTheRush · 26/05/2021 07:53

My boss is great so I’ll take the money please

gggrrrargh · 26/05/2021 07:56

Money please, my boss is great.

She’s just told me she has set a date for retirement, I’m very sad!

BarryTheKestrel · 26/05/2021 07:58

I'd rather the money. I have a new boss who seems lovely if a little passive, but my previous bosses weren't necessarily bad, just ineffective at management in small ways, I'd have put up with it better for more money. I work to live, I don't live to work, so money is a big motivator for me.

Lalliella · 26/05/2021 08:21

Your voting doesn’t make sense. Neither option fits me. I hate my boss and I’d forego the 5k to get a new one.

Squiggy · 26/05/2021 08:24

Money please

Flev · 26/05/2021 08:29

Right now, money please (in fact I'd consider a pay cut to keep my boss).

Previous job, I would absolutely have gone with the new boss option. They turned my previously fulfilling job into a frustrating grind that I couldn't wait to leave.
