New boss or £5k pa pay rise

Newbi · 26/05/2021 01:46

I’m just interested. I went to an smt conference a few years ago that referenced a study (sorry I can’t reference/evidence it) that said the vast majority of people would rather have a new boss than a 5k pay rise.
Intrigued to know how realistic that is- I’d pay more than that not to have to work for some of my pretty bosses. But equally I’d be horrified if my staff felt the way I do.
I’m wondering if it’s an industry thing or if I’m done with my current job?
Long story short would you rather a £5k pay rise or a new boss please?
If voting is on
Yabu- I love my boss I don’t want £5k
Yanbu- for an extra £5k I’ll put up with it
Anything’s in between will need comments! Thanks loads (and yes I’m struggling with my boss at the moment, hence the question)!

My boss is great - 5k for me please!

Donitta · 26/05/2021 08:32

If I got an extra £5k I’d be lucky if even £2k of that went in my pocket. The government would take the rest in tax. That isn’t enough of an incentive for me to put up with the status quo.

itwa · 26/05/2021 08:40

My boss left a few weeks ago and no one has been appointed yet, so we are all just getting on with our jobs quite effectively.

So on the basis that someone will probably give me a new boss in the near future, I'll take the £5k. Obviously if I get a hideous boss next, I'll give it back Smile

Hawkins001 · 26/05/2021 08:43

If the option was there for me, I'd have the 5k rise.

OttilieKnackered · 26/05/2021 08:43

It depends how much you earn as well. I would take the £5k in a second, even though I get on well with my boss. If I was earning, say, £50-£60k plus, when it would be subject to more tax and I would have a higher income already, then it’s a different question.

OttilieKnackered · 26/05/2021 08:45

Oh actually I think I’ve misread the question. Point about financial circumstances still stands though!

The fact that it was an SMT conference is probably key here to be honest....

PurplePlain · 26/05/2021 08:45

What guarantee is there that the new boss will be better than the current one?

YellowFish12 · 26/05/2021 08:47

Nope
My boss is good but I would take £5k
Same in previous role

Zzelda · 26/05/2021 09:12

I have no issues with my current boss so the issue doesn't arise. Last time I worked for a bad boss, I doubt that I'd necessarily have thought a new boss was better than a pay rise, because the new one would be an unknown quantity. Suppose I refused the pay rise and the new boss turned out to be just as bad?

JaceLancs · 26/05/2021 09:13

I am the boss - I’ll ask my staff!
I know at least 3 will say no to the money straight away - the other 9 could go either way!

Gorganzolabrie · 26/05/2021 09:14

I've usually been lucky enough to have bosses that let me get on with my work with little or no interference so I'd happily take the money.

Jengnr · 26/05/2021 09:17

I like my boss but I wouldn’t forgo the 5k to keep her. Roles are transient. Give me the money!

Hawkins001 · 26/05/2021 10:21

@JaceLancs

Keep us update d with the result please
TurquoiseDragon · 26/05/2021 10:59

I get on well with my boss, so I'd take the money.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 26/05/2021 11:04

My boss is fab, probably the best I've had. We get on well and they value me. I'd like a £5k pay rise though (but I'm a nurse, so not going to happen!).

idontlikealdi · 26/05/2021 11:06

I'd take the money as my boss is fine, but only if I was still being paid a decent market rate. If I could get 10k by jumping then I would.

MilduraS · 26/05/2021 12:08

I like my boss so I'd take the 5k pay rise. She has her bad days but she's generally very supportive, always makes time if you need her and knows the organisation inside out.

I had a boss in the past where I would have taken a 5k paycut to get rid of them. I dodged the worst of it but she was truly awful to some of my colleagues. I suppose I did take a paycut in a way as I left for a lower paying job (where I now have the lovely boss). Apparently when the awful boss finally left, her PA attempted to do a leaving collection. She came out of it with £7 in a company of 200 employees.

Horst · 26/05/2021 12:46

I like myself so I’ll take the 5k Grin

My other half would work where ever the money is best unfortunately seems to be the longer you stay in the same place you end up under paid than to if you was to hop jobs.

Campervan69 · 26/05/2021 12:47

The voting is not representative.

What about those of us who love our current boss AND want another £5k?

Thats me. So I can't vote.

MrsMonkeyBear · 26/05/2021 13:08

I love my bosses, but its part of working in a small family run business. My GM and department head are fantastic.

I'd also love a 5k pay rise!!

dalrympy · 26/05/2021 16:43

I like my boss so I'll take the 5k

My previous job - well I would have got rid of the boss

TheGoogleMum · 26/05/2021 16:52

Current boss is OK, I'll keep her and have 5k please!
You did the voting weird, there's no new boss option

JaceLancs · 26/05/2021 18:15

I sent out to team
Out of those who replied most said both
Rest were 50:50 extra money or retain me
I think I badly worded the question as well

gabsdot45 · 26/05/2021 18:22

I like my boss so, cash please for me.

wearetheweirdosmr · 26/05/2021 18:25

If my boss changed I'd be looking for a new job - 5K for me please
