To be gobsmacked that an interviewee openly told dh that he had looked at our accounts…

On companies house?

Dh did an interview today via zoom and the interviewee openly told him that they had looked at our company accounts on companies house to see if we were a healthy company!

Our dividends are on there and I'm really shocked that he basically admitted to being so nosey.

I know they are public information (which i disagree with) but they do show the company income, how much cash was in the bank and our salary etc.

Dh wants to offer him the job as he had some good qualities, but this has really put me off him.

I know people do look at peoples companies on the companies house, but you don't bloody tell them surely?!

Would you still offer him the job?

And...I think it's quite clearly a landslide yabvu!

CMZ2018 · 24/05/2021 19:32

An interview is a two way process, he’s doing his due diligence.

EveningOverRooftops · 24/05/2021 19:32

What would be OFF in there s scenario

If he’s looked you both up on Facebook, he didn’t.
If he looked you up on Instagram, he didn’t.
Looked you up in any other way that wasn’t related to the job he is applying for.

He looked at your businesses financial data. No doubt checked the website too.

Nowt wrong with checking a company website then looking at companies house to see if the website claims match with the company financials. I’m pretty sure anyone who has done business with you has checked this out.
Employees are no different. Still a business transaction.

eurochick · 24/05/2021 19:32

He sounds like he would be a diligent and proactive employee.

When I have joined a partnership I've had an accountant look over the accounts and also looked myself. It's the sensible thing to do.

Mumski45 · 24/05/2021 19:32

Depending on the size of your business you do t need to publish that much detail OP. Are you sure he has seen what you think he has seen as it may only be a short version of the accounts which are filed at Companies house.

BeastfromtheNorthEast · 24/05/2021 19:33

@ChampagneWorries Look at it rationaly, he hasn't looked in your personal bank account he was looking at the financial security of the company. I think it indicates he's a savvy person, it depends on the job but someone using initative usually is a positive.

If you are worried about privacy directors can elect not to include a copy of the income statement with the financial statements - ask your accountant.

Sounds like a very sensible thing to do. You sound very naive to think this is strange or cheeky.

ShanghaiDiva · 24/05/2021 19:34

@YellowFish12

It is normal research. You are mental. HTH.
Think that pretty much sums up the last nine pages.
madroid · 24/05/2021 19:34

Your salary doesn't have to show up unless you structure your accounts like that. Normally accounts just say operating costs.

You are being melodramatic OP. Not a good characteristic in a business owner or employer.

Pebbledashery · 24/05/2021 19:34

Op, give me his name I'll put him in touch with my contacts 🤣. They'll bite his hand off no doubt. He sounds like a good calibre of candidate and you sound batshit.

ScrollingLeaves · 24/05/2021 19:35

Yes, he has common sense, and he was open, and direct.

caringcarer · 24/05/2021 19:35

Any sensible potential employee would do this. This is a sensible potential employee. I would offer him the job. Your accounts are open to public scrutiny. Whether you agree or not is irrelevant because those are the rules you play by.

Mummy7777 · 24/05/2021 19:35

Erm that's a bizarre post op.

The fact that he looked is due diligence.

KevinTheGoat · 24/05/2021 19:35

I don't see what's so bad about it. I thought researching the company was a GOOD thing. It shows he's interested.

Erm that's perfectly normal. Especially at the moment! No one wants to be taken on by a company that's about to go under!

Seriously, maybe you're not ready to employ people with that strange attitude?

Crankley · 24/05/2021 19:36

Obviously agree with everyone else. Are you going to return to the thread and acknowledge you are wrong or have you already flounced?

Dogsandbabies · 24/05/2021 19:37

Are you serious? I think it is intelligent and prudent of them. It would earn brownie points in my opinion.

LifeinPieces21 · 24/05/2021 19:37

Lots of people will have looked at it both for professional reasons (which he did) or just to be nosey. Its public information.

YABVU

AgathaX · 24/05/2021 19:38

I hope you realise how unreasonable you are now?????

Hawkins001 · 24/05/2021 19:38

@ChampagneWorries

Its the fact he’s told dh that he had looked at them.

Fine to look for your own security but i think it was off to admit it.

I would of thought he would of said that he had looked at our website, reviews etc not bloody financial information!

I hate people knowing our salary and how much is in the business bank etc.

I would never say that to an interviewer.

A good candidate for various intelligence agencies, bottom line, op, which do you prefer someone who has done bare research on the company, or someone that has compiled a detailed intelligence profile ?
user68901 · 24/05/2021 19:38

This is basic research. It shows initiative and commercial sense to check the company out and you should be giving him positive marks for this. Company information is available to the public and quite rightly so.

TheVampiresWife · 24/05/2021 19:38

Job interviews aren't just for the employers benefit

This.

I wouldn't want to work for an employer who thought an interview was entirely for their benefit - it would speak volumes about how my working life would be if I got the job.

YABVU.

Guavaf1sh · 24/05/2021 19:39

Was going to say you were mental too but as everyone else has already I’m relieved

Dishwashersaurous · 24/05/2021 19:39

diligent, proactive, interested individual. Sounds like a fantastic potential employee.

If you are looking for a new job of course you look at the financial position of the company first , as absolutely no point getting a job with a company that's about to fold.
