To be gobsmacked that an interviewee openly told dh that he had looked at our accounts…

On companies house?

Dh did an interview today via zoom and the interviewee openly told him that they had looked at our company accounts on companies house to see if we were a healthy company!

Our dividends are on there and I'm really shocked that he basically admitted to being so nosey.

I know they are public information (which i disagree with) but they do show the company income, how much cash was in the bank and our salary etc.

Dh wants to offer him the job as he had some good qualities, but this has really put me off him.

I know people do look at peoples companies on the companies house, but you don't bloody tell them surely?!

Would you still offer him the job?

OP has long gone...

Whythesadface · 24/05/2021 22:14

If you have never looked go have a nose, it's full of great info,
always good to know .

NakedBanana · 24/05/2021 22:16

@Diamondnights

It is what any applicant should do as basic due diligence on the company they may be joining.
This!

I'd def give him the job, sounds a switched on cookie!

Coconut2010 · 24/05/2021 22:17

What he did is “best practice” and I can understand why he mentioned it to your DH.
Any normal employer with half a brain would have been impressed by his diligent attitude.

I hope you don’t offer him a job and he’s got a lucky escape.

MzHz · 24/05/2021 22:17

My oh looks up everyone he deals with.

You need to check people out before you waste your time on someone who’s going tits up.

EngTech · 24/05/2021 22:24

Brownie points for the interviewee 👍

Did their homework 👍

Interviews work both ways I.e. Do I really want to work at this company

aiwblam · 24/05/2021 22:25

The candidate showed diligence and honesty.

I'm astonished that you consider these poor qualities.

Are you using the business to launder drug money or something? Why don't you want him researching it?

Miasicarisatia · 24/05/2021 22:26

I would of thought he would of said 😂🤣

As an accountant there's a very good reason. The accounts are in the public domain. The directors of companies benefit from being 'behind the corporate veil' meaning you get benefits of being incorporated. The cost of those benefits means there is info in the public domain.

Your interviewee was doing his readearch, probably wanted to know the chances of you going bankrupt. This thoroughness would make me want to hire him or her even more.

Get a grip!!

plasticsausages · 24/05/2021 22:27

I always check a companies accounts? It's public for a reason. I also always mention this in interviews albeit I am always being hired for financial roles so it's relevant.
I need to know the company I am going to work for are solvent as well.

SATSmadness · 24/05/2021 22:29

@ChampagneWorries

Have you and your DH looked at your accounts online at Companies House ?

From experience, if your company is just a modest sized "Ltd", business company then it should not need to show dividends or salary details in the paperwork filed at companies house.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 24/05/2021 22:30

I'd be quite impressed tbh and more likely to hire someone who is both upfront and honest and has a bit of savvy.

lurkingfromhome · 24/05/2021 22:31

Does anyone else have a real desire to somehow track down this guy and warn him off accepting this job where one of the directors has no grasp of due diligence, doesn't understand the basics of what info appears on a Companies House listing and can't string a grammatical sentence together?

Let's find that poor chap as a basic act of humanity.

Pebbledashery · 24/05/2021 22:33

What have you started op🤣

hedgehogger1 · 24/05/2021 22:33

I'm Gobsmacked that you're gobsmacked. He's done morning he shouldn't have

nanbread · 24/05/2021 22:34

Yeah YANBU OP, I despise open and honest employees who are interested in their prospective employers. Awful. Don't employ him.

Scantilydoesit · 24/05/2021 22:36

I do it all the time. Fed up of being ripped off by tradespeople so always look beforehand now as my last cowboy builders suddenly went bankrupt with my money. Companies house showed me some interesting activity.

Really? It's standard to check if your employer is a financially viable asset. That's what you do to your candidates in multiple ways. The assessment goes both ways.
DynamoKev · 24/05/2021 22:39

@mylovelydd

Presumably the posters saying YABU and it's normal to tell you he looked up your financial information on Companies House don't actually feature on Companies House themselves Hmm Presumably they also like their home address being public knowledge and also tell people what they earn too...yeah thought not.

YANU at all Op. It's weird. I even had a potential employee look up on Rightmove our house and they commented that some friend used to live on our road...It might be one thing to look at the financial health of a company pre interview or supplying them but to tell a person to their face that they don't even know, that they know where they live and how much they earn is not normal.

Total bollocks - as I mentioned I have been on Companies House for two ltd companies I ran. You don’t have to give home address.
tttigress · 24/05/2021 22:41

I think he has some common sense, however it is not very suitable to say you have openly been googling for info on s person/company.

Birminghambloke · 24/05/2021 22:42

When you look to a meeting job, you do your research. Public domain information is first port of call. I expect people to have looked up my organisation and referred to it in their application. If not, it’s a job, a role not my role!

Shadedog · 24/05/2021 22:45

Who the hell wouldn’t look! DH’s company, which I’m a director of is on companies house. I still think is not just normal, but preferable for potential employees to look. My proper job is NHS and when I’ve changed trusts I’ve looked at the financial health of the trust because I don’t want to get shafted with “we can’t afford the staff, equipment or overtime for you to do your job”. When I interview I think it’s pretty good if candidates take a break from telling me how compassionate and patient focussed they are and say they want to work with us because we are solvent and investing in services.

It’s not a bad idea to use an address other than your home address. Friend of mine who is a C list sleb had a “fan” turn up at her door and she told her that that’s where she’d got the address from.

Ormally · 24/05/2021 22:45

Errr...what?! I use Companies House loads, and also the Charity Commission site - not just job interviews, but contracting, VAT numbers and registration, project funding. It's public domain! If I don't do this for smaller companies as part of a range of checks, my own large organisation could stand to be fined a lot of money.

Lysianthus · 24/05/2021 22:46
