Is three bottles of wine a week too much?

My husband, not me. Since I've been pregnant, so abstaining from drink altogether, I've been more aware of his drinking. It's by no means a problem judging by his behaviour but I just wondered if this is (obviously a bit unhealthy) but normal for some. It's spread out over the week so he doesn't binge at weekends.

OP posts:

It's too much for me, unfortunately I find if very hard not too. I've done dry January / feb, read quit lit, joined support groups and I still can't help but drink it.

PurpleDaisies · 24/05/2021 18:37

You are though, and you made out one glass of wine is shock, horror over the limits and will kill me in a slow painful death.............

What “am I though”? Two bottles a week is over the recommended limit. That is just a fact, even if you’re only pouring one glass a night. I’m sorry that’s so upsetting for you.

PurpleDaisies · 24/05/2021 18:39

Oh, reading again I think you’re accusing me of harping on.

Again I’ll point out that you are posting regularly on this thread. I’m guessing it only counts as harping on if it doesn’t fit with what you want to hear.

Coldwine75 · 24/05/2021 18:43

I am replying to you, who is also posting reguarly on this thread?? Nothing about what you have said is upsetting for me thank you very much. Think about the bigger picture, sugar and salt, highly processed foods and obsesity too?

PurpleDaisies · 24/05/2021 18:44

Those things are not relevant.
This is a thread about alcohol consumption.

Coldwine75 · 24/05/2021 18:46

As i said before its totally relevant
PurpleDaisies · 24/05/2021 18:49

Explain how in simple words so I can understand.

Nobody would go on a thread about eating too much salt and start posting about how much booze people are drinking.

Coldwine75 · 24/05/2021 18:51

I have already gone over this as well as other posters so am not repeating it again, end of.

notanothertakeaway · 24/05/2021 18:57

@Coldwine75 you seem quite invested in this thread. OP asked if 3 bottles of wine is excessive. It's double the NHS recommended maximum units, so clearly excessive

You are at liberty to drink as much or as little as you like, but I don't understand your insistence that 3 bottles of wine is absolutely fine, no cause for concern

3 is too much i agree , i have 2 !

Going back over the thread, your argument seems to be: there are so many other areas in our diets and life that can seriously affect health worse than wine.

There might be other areas that people also need to address as well but that does not change the fact that consistently drinking over the recommended amount increases your risk of damaging your liver and all sorts of other health problems. Even on the background of a perfect diet and exercise regime, that doesn’t change that regularly drinking too much alcohol increases your risk of problems in the same way as smoking does.

“Do I need to cut down on my alcohol?”doesn’t depend on whether you’re also eating too many burgers or if the rest of your life is perfect. That’s why those other things aren’t relevant.

Replying to you is not going on at you. It is a discussion forum. You should expect discussion.
Coldwine75 · 24/05/2021 19:13

Sure we can discuss all night, I'll just grab by wine and be right back with you :)

Coldwine75 · 24/05/2021 19:13

Btw , you dont discuss, you dictate.

Babygotblueyes · 24/05/2021 19:15

Guidelines are 14 units a week, and some non drinking days. So yes, sounds like too much.

ohnoohnoohnononononoo · 24/05/2021 19:16

@Coldwine75 are you hammered?

Peoniesandpeaches · 24/05/2021 19:22

3 bottles of wine is usually equal to around 30 units. A 70cl of vodka or whisky is typically around 28 units. Would you be ok with him drinking a bottle of spirits a week?

PurpleDaisies · 24/05/2021 19:24

@Coldwine75

Btw , you dont discuss, you dictate.
Er, ok. Confused

How have I done that? By pointing out facts about the alcohol guidance? I’ve said again and again you’re free to ignore them but pretending you’re drinking within them is not a healthy way to think about your drinking.

ohnoohnoohnononononoo · 24/05/2021 19:27

@PurpleDaisies it's a brick wall that one

Babygotblueyes · 24/05/2021 19:38

@Cowbells

I respect Nutt but he's grossly exaggerating over this in order to pursue a very different agenda of his own regarding rules on mind-altering substances.

There are many known benefits of small amounts of wine. It relaxes us (good thing. Red wine has anti oxidants (good thing.) One glass a year is nonsense. Maybe one small glass a day or every other day. It doesn't poison us.

Alcohol is a poison - this is why people get alcohol poisoning. What science is your rebuttal of Nutt based on?

As for the benefits - alcohol has a depressant effect on your CNS, and exacerbates depression, anxiety and poor sleep.

What is apparent is that many people dont want to accept that it is a potentially dangerous substance not necessary to life because they like it. If that is the case, drink what you like, but dont do down government guidelines and scientists just because you dont like what they are saying. I like a drink too. Within guidelines, with most days non drinking. But this thread is about OP question - and the answer is yes.

userxx · 24/05/2021 20:52

Its no cause for concern. Really it's not. 3 a night is cause for concern.

PurpleDaisies · 24/05/2021 21:00

Even though it’s double the guidance? You are aware that it’s thirty units not fourteen?

sadperson16 · 24/05/2021 21:09

Can I just point out that alcohol is both a stimulant and a depressant.

If it were merely the latter, there would be very little appeal.

3 bottles is over the guidelines, we have established that.
11 stone is over my BMi, we can establish that.
Some people like to eat junk and drink.
