To want him to go to A&E?

Earlier my partner knocked his hand on the worktop in the kitchen. His knuckle is now swollen and he said it's painful. He won't go to A&E though as he says he's ‘fine’.

Aibu to insist he goes?

@Darkstar4855

YABU. This is what minor injuries units are for.
There's no minor injuries nearby.

A sore little finger is too minor even for minor injuries Grin

osbertthesyrianhamster · 23/05/2021 16:00

Then you alternate paracetamol with ibu and ice every couple of hours. He rapped his hand on a worktop, not dropped a brick on his hand. Hmm

insancerre · 23/05/2021 16:00

I would treat at home and only seek treatment if it doesn’t start to get better in a week

TheVolturi · 23/05/2021 16:01

The little finger (fifth metacarpal) is the most common thing to fracture if you punch a hard surface.

WoMandalorian · 23/05/2021 16:01

What do you think they would do at A&E for a swollen knuckle? Other than tell him to take paracetamol/ibuprofen and rest it?

WouldBeGood · 23/05/2021 16:02

YABU. It’s his decision anyway.

How did he come to knock it on a worktop with such force, just as an aside?

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 23/05/2021 16:03

Jesus wept.

Worried234 · 23/05/2021 16:05

FFS. A and E for a swollen finger, that a grown adult has said is 'Fine'...

Are you for real?

imaginethemdragons · 23/05/2021 16:06

Well op I think you have your answer.
Paracetamol, ibuprofen alternating and regular ice.
Home care will be fine, don’t ask him to inappropriately clog up A&E with this minor injury, it really will be a complete waste of everyone’s time.

FourTeaFallOut · 23/05/2021 16:08

Did he hurt his finger mid-strop, op?

Sorry if I'm on the wrong track but are you looking to get him out of the house?

stuckinarutatwork · 23/05/2021 16:09

A&E is probably unnecessary.

Perhaps a trip to minor injuries or your GP tomorrow if it's still sore / swollen.

TheQueef · 23/05/2021 16:10

This is why we can't have nice things.

An0n0n0n · 23/05/2021 16:11

Its not an emergency. Even if it's broken its not an emergency. I dont blame him, i wouldn't wamt to sit in A&E for 4 hours when it will be the same tomorrow.

I’m wondering the same

I'm not sure as I was changing baby at the time but he told me he knocked it.
OP posts:
tentosix · 23/05/2021 16:31

'Knocking' his hand is not going to break any bones, so it will be a soft tissue injury which will swell and restrict movement. Stop being silly.

itsgettingwierd · 23/05/2021 16:35

If you knocked a part of your body it tends to swell or bruise or both.

That doesn't mean a and e.

A and e is for pain that isn't relived by usual OTC medication alongside restricted movement and an inability to carry on normal activity.

And I'm sure as a grown adult he's able to decide for himself if he meets the criteria for an x ray?

What do you mean?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 23/05/2021 16:39

If there is no 'minor injuries unit' nearby they may able to get an air ambulance to you.

Could you perhaps layout a big H on the lawn with bedsheets?

Grin
Stimult · 23/05/2021 16:57

I was only asking, there's no need for some of these replies Hmm

OP posts:
Muchmorethan · 23/05/2021 17:01

No l wouldn't go. The fact that he said it's fine shows that he is not in need of medical treatment.

Even if it was broken, they'd just strap it to the next finger anyway which you can do at home

TaraR2020 · 23/05/2021 17:07

Ibuprofen is also an anti inflammatory so he should take some to help bring down the swelling and ease the pain. And remember RICE of course.

I wouldn't rush off to a&e for this, as long as circulation isn't compromised (so whole of finger is still pink and healthy).

Minor injuries would be more appropriate for treatment, but since there aren't many around these days if its still bad tomorrow and he wants it looking at then id suggest a gp apt (if you can get one)...They'll refer for an xray if they think its necessary.

TheGumption · 23/05/2021 17:10

What?! 😂

VaguelyInteresting · 23/05/2021 17:13

No, OP. That’s not an A&E situation.

It’s barely worthy of comment- unless in a MASSIVE drip feed, it turns out his job is catalogue model and he’s doing tea sets tomorrow, which require full extension of the little finger.
