To think there is no outcry over the BBC Princess Diana thing

I saw on the news they were saying there was an outcry over it. I'm pretty sure nobody I know irl is bothered, it seems like just the people who decide whats on the news/in the papers think it's a big deal. Or do you know people who are bothered about it?

What Bashir did was despicable but Prince Charles lying, gaslighting Diana, marrying her for convenience (without her knowledge) is mostly responsible for her paranoia and poor mental health. It seems to me that the royals are trying to rewrite history so that people forget the genuine content of the interview (3 of us in the marriage) and make out that Di was coerced into the interview and that the BBC was somehow responsible for her mental unwellness.

x2boys · 22/05/2021 20:14

I think Diana was far from innocent herself though ,the whole marriage was a ridiculous sham .

ncgy · 22/05/2021 20:17

This was in the 90,s though so the whole saville cover up and everything else was still going on at the time .

I thought the cover up over this was only exposed recently though?

TheValeyard · 22/05/2021 20:18

Very little in public life has made me sicker than tabloid journalists, editors and readers trying to score political points off of the BBC. Hypocritical cretins, every one.

DoingItMyself · 22/05/2021 20:23

It's history for some of you, but I remember it. So, Martin Bashir and the BBC being corrupt is significant. And, if the BBC was corrupt then, what have they been up to since? Yes, we know some of it, turning a blind eye to the sexual exploitation of children by their staff... so what else? Should we really be compelled to fund these people?

nocoolnamesleft · 22/05/2021 20:24

I think it's a pity she didn't have the sense to wear a seatbelt. Then she might still be alive to give her opinion. And her kids might be slightly less messed up. Beyond that, it was long time ago.

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 22/05/2021 20:26

“Should we really be compelled to fund these people?” Is PRECISELY the question, thank you @DoingItMyself for being more articulate than me!

Who can possibly justify women on low incomes being sent to prison to fund this kind of corporate behaviour? It is unacceptable.

The driver was apparently drunk though and they were being chased by the papparezi so seat belt or not the outcome may have been the same i,t was a tragic death
FakeColinCaterpillar · 22/05/2021 20:31

She was an adult who went on TV to talk about her marriage and her and her husbands affairs.
It was never going to be a good decision or one that was good for her children.

They are not ,nobody needs to speak to the TV inspectors just don't engage ,if they do get sent to prison it's because they haven't paid the fine ,however they could either buy a TV licence or just not speak to the people who check wether they have a licence and implicate themselves
osbertthesyrianhamster · 22/05/2021 20:34

This, entirely!

Sadsiblingatsea · 22/05/2021 20:36

The BBC covered up Bashir's disgusting corruption and illegal behaviour for 25 years. It's like Jimmy Saville all over again. He lied to Princess Diana and her brother and was complicit in her decline and her death.
He faked documents and when the man he employed to do this realised what was going on, had him fired! This guy lost his job, his income and it affected his life for years.
I can't believe anyone doesn't think this is a huge story.

TheValeyard · 22/05/2021 20:42

Should we really be compelled to fund these people

Yes - individual nefariousness does not invalidate the invaluable contribution to public life of a publicly funded broadcaster.

x2boys · 22/05/2021 20:42

I think what Jimmy saville did was far worse tbh ,he was a prolific child abuser, which the BBC covered up ,Diana was an adult who chose to do an interview ,she also corroborated with Andrew Morton's book "Diana my true story just a couple of years before

ncgy · 22/05/2021 20:49

I don't disagree hence why I was surprised they were happy to do another cover up.

ncgy · 22/05/2021 20:53

I mean we only know about this now because of Dysons report.

londonrach · 22/05/2021 20:54

Yanbu. I don't know a single person who is interested and that includes harry, who I think is saying more nasty things about his family. Kinda just getting through lockdown and looking forward to seeing family and friends.

Eastie77 · 22/05/2021 20:54

Apparently William told her not to do the interview because he thought the whole set-up was dodgy. So if a 13 year old boy was able to see through Bashir then a grown woman should have been able to. I think she 'believed' the lies what she wanted to hear.

I have no time for the RF and hope I live to see a Republic. But I feel sorry for both boys. Two very damaged young men who have put their mother on a pedestal, cannot accept she put a foot wrong and just seem to be weighed down with so much anger.

DogsSausages · 22/05/2021 20:57

Even if you dont really remember or liked Diana, the fact that some of the BBC staff and directors have behaved so badly, deceitfully and covered this up is shameful. We pay their salaries, very high salaries, they are not called the Biased Bigot Corporation for no reason, now they decide to step down or resign from various posts which they should never have been given in the first place.

donquixotedelamancha · 22/05/2021 20:58

Or do you know people who are bothered about it?

I don't know anyone who has even mentioned it.

The fact that some journo lied some celeb to get an interview years ago is trivial compared to everything else going on.

TheValeyard · 22/05/2021 20:59

But I feel sorry for both boys

So do I - i also think they have been remarkably restrained. If i was them i would be itching to put the boot into the British public themselves, whose prurient and childish interest was the driving force behind the tabloids and the media who did so much damage.

donquixotedelamancha · 22/05/2021 21:02

I love MN :-)

Yes I agree with that they were both very young and lost their mum in tragic circumstances, with the eyes of the world on them ,Diana for all her faults certainly loved her boys and I'm sure they loved her too,as adults we can see our parents have faults however much we love them ,but they didn't know their mum as an adult if they did they would no doubt still adore her but be able to see her reality faults and all.
Starlightstarbright1 · 22/05/2021 21:05

I also think the phone hacking scandal was worse. The clips i have seen looks like very dodgy acting to me.

ncgy · 22/05/2021 21:05

For me it's the cover up, clearly it's ingrained the culture.
