My husband has booked a holiday for the half term.
I thought fab, just what we need...till he told me he has bought a 6 man tent and we are going away to Scotland for a week in a tent.
He's booked a parkdene tent holiday.
It was £155 for 4 of us and he has paid £700 for a tent.
He has bought sleeping bags, fridge etc
He said it's to save money.

Aibu here ?
A week in a tent in Scotland with 2 kids who don't sleep anyway.
I'm not high maintenance but I'm worried about the toilet /shower situation

I'm not happy

@Davros yes toilet block and shower block. Make sure u don't use the shower at the end of the block OP or you will enjoy everyone else's soapy suds coming your way. We've camped in some posh places and some not so posh. One place we saw the site owners standing outside the loo block hosing it all down from the outside! Fortunately we had a touring caravan by that time but my poor friends in their tent......

Lweji · 23/05/2021 17:07

I might get the appeal of camping (not really) if it meant being in contact with nature properly.
Camping in an overcrowded camping site, with lots of tents around, shared toilets, etc, no thanks. Better get a bungallow or a cottage somewhere. Or any mass tourism resort. At least bathrooms are private.

As a last resort, maybe glamping in places where hotels are not allowed.

From the bottom of my heart before you do or buy anything I would advise your husband has AT LEAST one (better two) practise runs at putting up the tent. This. is. important.

Its NO fun trying to put a new tent on site after a journey with one tired, hungry child let alone two!
Practise runs for tent putting up is essential -trust me on this- we never went camping again.

TickyTacky · 23/05/2021 17:20

Take the camping gear back and switch to a static caravan/ lodge, it'll be alright then. We have lovely UK holidays in caravans/ lodges, some even have hot tubs. No to the tent and shared toilets Confused

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 23/05/2021 17:25

Yabu and high maintenance. Get on with it, thousands of people enjoy it every year, it will be fine

TheJade · 23/05/2021 17:25

It should have been discussed before booked defo!

BUT I would still go! Lighten up, change your mindset and have a laugh. Life is what you make it 😍😍😍

ConfusedCarrie · 23/05/2021 17:26

Most campsites have a toilet and shower block. I love camping Grin

angela99999 · 23/05/2021 17:27

This man is not a keeper.
Has he ever done anything selfish and stupid like this before? You could actually have a decent holiday for what you'll spend in the end. If it turns out that you have a good time it might be worth it, assuming that you do it regularly. But if my DH had ever done anything like this without discussing it he'd have been living in the tent from then on.

RandomUsernameHere · 23/05/2021 17:28

YANBU
Haven't rtft but it's totally bizarre that he booked a holiday without discussing it with you.
I actually quite like camping, but that's not the point!

PermanentTemporary · 23/05/2021 17:28

Since you're going - another vote for single Thermarests or other self inflating mattresses, not airbeds.
Pegs to hang out wet stuff (towels and tea towels).
A proper lamp of some kind, you can get some that double as a torch.

Hang on - Scotland? In June? Oh fuck. More insect repellent than you'd believe possible, plus complete cover up clothes for everyone - consider a hazmat suit each - to stop you being eaten alive by midges? Or am I exaggerating that bit?

mariabwebster · 23/05/2021 17:28

What is thus cultural obsession with “ AIBU” stuff?
Only you know if you want to do it? You’re an adult woman ?
So, try to answer it for yourself, as I’m sure you already know the answer to be honest

Kittysummer · 23/05/2021 17:29

As long as this is considered spontaneous and not controlling I would be over the moon. Camping is great fun and the kids will use so much energy they will sleep really well. Your lucky to be having a holiday, many either can not go or can afford to go. Have fun, live for the moment.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 23/05/2021 17:30

@CassandraTrotter

OP the absolute worst bit about camping is getting home and washing and putting everything away . Make sure he knows he is doing that
Oh, please! She's already writing lists, chasing up stuff, etc etc. They've got the dynamic that suits them both - he's a controlling and domineering person with not much consideration for others and she's the enabler/martyr. The hell he'll be cooking, shopping, packing and unpacking, he doesn't even want to stop en route with two young kids in tow.
Buttercup1954 · 23/05/2021 17:32

Southerness is brilliant for kids. But I have to admit I'd much rather be in one of the caravans than in a tent. Even if it's a £700 one. Sadly it's very popular and you might struggle to get booked at this time of the year.

Davros · 23/05/2021 17:33

I'd get blotto 🍷 every evening and let him deal with the kids

LittleLadyCece · 23/05/2021 17:33

"breadbreadwine" Sorry if you've already said but is this the Auchenlaire Park in Dumfries? If so we went last year and the kids loved it! I'm no camper but if you make sure you get an electric tent hook up it's not so bad.

As a non camper I'd say forget the airbeds and go for camp beds. Keep you off the ground and much warmer. With the hook up I was even able to take the actual kettle!!

Highly recommend you going to a place called Creams of Galloway - its an ice cream farm but has loads of activities for the kids. They absolutely loved it!

Good luck and ps yes I'd be fuming with my husband without discussing first!!

KatharinaRosalie · 23/05/2021 17:33

Camping might be great fun for you.

LovelyIssues · 23/05/2021 17:35

You absolutely not being reasonable. That would be hell for me! And I would be annoyed it hadn't been discussed prior to booking. That also sounds a lot of money for camping in Scotland! Can he take the children alone?

Diamondsandjems · 23/05/2021 17:36

Parkdean resorts are really expensive (well in Wales anyway) it was £800 Friday to Sunday on a normal weekend you’d paid £1000’s for a whole week in half term. Give it a go, you might enjoy it, it’s a break. What were you expecting?

thenovice · 23/05/2021 17:36

I assume he is volunteering to do the packing of all required items and all the cooking/housekeeping whilst camping?
Self-catering in tent conditions is NOT a holiday for anyone who has to do that drudgery the rest of the year.

@user11838686969686

Air beds etc He wanted us to just use sleeping bags

Wow, he really doesn't knowing anything about camping, does he?

You need insulation between you and the ground - if you're using airbeds then you still need insulation (camp mat will do) between the airbed and the ground otherwise you will end up very, very cold.

It's not just about the layers on top of you, but the ones underneath you. You could have 10 blankets over you, but if you've no insulation underneath you then you'll still be freezing cold from the ground.

^^this, with knobs on! It can be unbelievably cold at night so be prepared to wear joggers, fleece, warm socks on top of pyjamas. Have flip flops or similar to hand for middle of the night loo trips, plus a torch/loo roll/hand wipes. Take waterproofs/wellies even if forecast is good!

Best of British luck op!

AmperoBlue · 23/05/2021 17:38

Just a weather update from my folks in Wigtown who phoned today...
These are people that farm, are very used to bad weather, have dogs so out whatever..
they haven’t been able to leave the house as it’s torrential apparently.

I mean what are the chances it will still be like that in 2 weeks though...right.?

AlRRRR · 23/05/2021 17:39

I’m a camper with young children but I defo would not be going anywhere but as south as possible and only in hot dry weather (if you’re lucky) July /august time 😬😬😬😬

RaeRae84 · 23/05/2021 17:41

Agree with the camp bed suggestion! We had a double air bed that was high off the ground so it felt more like a bed but they are still a pain. We got a decent double camp bed and it's so much more comfortable and no worrying about deflating.
I'm not hugely into camping but it's not that bad once you've got set up. Plus it's a bit of an adventure for kids.

Beachmum23 · 23/05/2021 17:44

Love camping. You will save a fortune long term insist on Vango Shangri La 10cm sleeping mats and take your duvet and pillow with you. Make sure you take electric and take a small heater.

We have been away loads in the rain and loved it. Wind is a pain
