to put this unsolicited Avon catalogue in the recycling bin?

Came home to an Avon catalogue on the doormat. I didn't ask for it.

It has a note telling me to leave it our for collection on Sunday afternoon. The actual wording is "Leave this catalogue out on your doorstep for collection on Sunday afternoon EVEN IF YOU DONT WANT TO PLACE AN ORDER".
We're going away this weekend so I don't want to put it out tomorrow morning and have it lying there advertising the fact that we're not at home until Sunday afternoon.
The note says that if I can't put it out on Sunday afternoon I can call the person and arrange another time to collect it.

AIBU to just chuck it? I didn't ask for it, I don't want to phone a stranger up and arrange for her to collect it at a different time. Or will she come knocking on my door at some other random time looking for it? How long do I have to keep it lying around my house in case she comes back for it?

And who does she actually think she is to drop this off at my house then tell me in capital letters what to do with it?

And finally, why has this pissed me off out of all proportion

So do manners and talking to people before posting unsolicited crap through their door.

Boomisshiss · 21/05/2021 13:24

Don’t go out your way if you don’t want to just leave it on the doorstep then bin it . You didn’t ask for it.

SoThisisMe · 21/05/2021 13:24

Sorry, that was to user1487194234

ginghamtablecloths · 21/05/2021 13:25

I'd put it in a plastic bag to protect it from the rain and leave it on the doorstep. It doesn't advertise the fact that you're away, merely that the Avon lady hasn't collected it. She'll soon get the message and stop leaving them if you don't order things.

Kisforkaylied · 21/05/2021 13:26

I've recently had one through with a note that says "due to covid, this is yours to keep" so I have put it in the recycling!

Out of her way? She’s literally got to put it outside her own house. 🤣

@motogogo

Thanks! I see, kind of makes sense, although I’d have thought a Facebook page or “find your nearest rep” link more appropriate than spamming everyone with catalogues. I can’t imagine anyone making anything out of a £2 transaction or being bothered with the hassle of dealing with someone separately to save pence on makeup, but I’ll freely admit I’m not exactly their target market!

SwedishK · 21/05/2021 13:31

I’d bin it. They are basically fly tipping.

Somanysocks · 21/05/2021 13:31

Do they still do Moonwind talc, used to get that back in the day? Grin

Mochudubh · 21/05/2021 13:31

The last catalogue I had actually asked me to recycle if I didn't want to order (unless I read it wrong).

Avon distributors never last more than a couple of months round here, we're not a well off area and their stuff is expensive compared to the discount stores. I used to try to buy something as I felt bad not doing so if the distributor was a neighbour but I don't bother now as on the odd occasion I've found a product I like Avon either discontinue it or change the formula.

novacanenovacane · 21/05/2021 13:32

I got one not long ago with a similar note, and I threw it without hesitation. Then felt bad. But it is annoying to receive junk mail

RealhousewifeofStoke · 21/05/2021 13:32

Bin it.
Anything unsolicited trying to sell stuff goes straight in the recycling.
And of course it will draw the attention of anyone scoping empty houses. People are so naive.

Notaroadrunner · 21/05/2021 13:36

I wouldn't appreciate getting one knowing it's come from god knows how many other households before mine. I'd bin it straight away. I have a No Junk Mail sign on my postbox so that I don't get any unsolicited crap.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 21/05/2021 13:38

I came on to say YABU, as the catalogues are quite expensive. Then I read your OP, and realised you were quite reasonably naffed off by a list of demands, written in a fairly abrupt/rude way, so I changed my mind. If the catalogue isn't collected, and the same person leaves another one, then that's fair game for you to recycle, or have some kind of ceremony burning it in the garden or putting a stake through it's cold paper heart. You can choose whether or not you want to do this naked. Grin

BiBabbles · 21/05/2021 13:39

You're not entirely unreasonable to do what you want with something put through your letter box; however, many people I know, me included sometimes, just put these things back out straight away. Might depend on the area, but I don't think it would automatically signal anything to burglars.

Rae36 · 21/05/2021 13:40

Noooo! This was my worry in the first place and all the other posters talked me out of it.

Okay, I'm not leaving it on the step overnight while we're away. I'll keep it inside for a week and see if she comes back for it.

I'm not texting her, I don't want her having my number and adding me to her mailing list. She can knock the door next time she's passing and take her chances.

supadupapupascupa · 21/05/2021 13:41

I don't understand why Avon people do this. I've done it a few times in my youth but I always took the time to knock on everyone's door, introduce myself and ask if they would like one! They cost quite a lot of money and time to drop off and collect!
I made a list, noted who was interested and also any product favs and previous orders. You can target samples that way.

roguetomato · 21/05/2021 13:43

I don't think just because catalogue is left outside, people automatically assume the house is empty. Those just left outside until someone come to collect them anyway, sometimes for days.
I used to see lots during school pick ups.
I can't chuck it, feel too bad for someone trying to earn some money.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 21/05/2021 13:44

Put it in a bag, stick it on the door step, go on holiday and get over yourself.

Rae36 · 21/05/2021 13:44

Then why do this random drop then? My neighbour in his 80s is not going to buy anything, I'd be surprised if my neighbour in his 20s does, but you never know. I know the mum of the family in the next house up is already involved with another cosmetics pyramid scheme because I get social media crap from her all the time. So that's 4 brochures she's not going to get any money from.

Or do they scope out the street, have a look in the window and see if it looks like a young family or an old person?

PegasusReturns · 21/05/2021 13:45

Honestly it would give me the rage and then I’d check myself, feel grateful that is not how I have to make a living and leave it out in a plastic bag.

IrmaFayLear · 21/05/2021 13:45

You can order Avon without the catalogue and a rep. I just bought some makeup on the recommendation of a Mnetter and it was excellent.

People will complain about anything. If you don’t want a leaflet/catalogue just put it in the recycling. If you are not away then you can leave a catalogue on the porch. It’s hardly ruining your life Confused

SinisterBumFacedCat · 21/05/2021 13:45

Poor lady likely can’t afford a holiday.

tywysoges · 21/05/2021 13:47

OP, don’t worry about the burglar thing. I had one of these a couple of months ago, also unsolicited, but I let DD pick a few bits. Left outside on the day requested, they never came back for it. It was on my window sill outside for about 4 weeks before I recycled it, and no burglars attempted to break into my house (or my neighbour’s, who also left it out for ages).
