No one wants weekend work

LastOrdersMaura · 21/05/2021 08:50

My friend has a cafe. It's in a central location with a good bus route, cycle route and ten mins walk from a huge university campus.
Despite the jobs being on Indeed and advertised on a local job site, no one is applying. Or they apply but say 'is there any negotiation on the days?' Why doesn't anyone want weekend work anymore? I would have thought there would have been college students, Uni students, mums/ dads who can only work when partners are home, retired people who are bored. Why is it so difficult to recruit?

I have a DC currently studying at a U.K. university and they’ve had exams scheduled on Saturdays, Sundays, also papers due on the weekend. Might want to consider that fact, not all university students get every weekend off.

astery · 23/05/2021 01:08

@ilovesouthlondon surely people using job centre plus will be mainly unemployed? So 12 hours work will not be enough.

DollyD65 · 23/05/2021 01:17

I'm sorry but I wouldn't employ a teenager if the initial approach was by a parent.
Lots of friends who recruit wouldn't either. The point is that teenagers need to show initiative and job seek for themselves.
Both my kids whilst at school and uni had part time jobs, gained by being proactive, not because I job searched on their behalf.
For the person who stated that a hospitality job was of no value to a student on a CV, absolute rubbish! Work experience is highly valued by recruiters.

subbysammiexoxo · 23/05/2021 03:41

is it london? I will do it! I need extra hours happy to do weekends

subbysammiexoxo · 23/05/2021 03:46

saw your comment about mw and retract my comment, you have accepted being on mw that is your problem, I'm on 35k a year mon-fri central london looking to increase in order to rent my own flat and save for a house or flat for the next 18 months.

I often interview grads as part of my job. There are loads who never worked during holiday or weekends. When I was a student I worked in a call centre in the holidays and has various crap job throughout my teens: pub, waitress, hotel work, shop.

So I always ask them, did you have a summer job as a student?

No

What did you do over summer then? (bearing in mind it's 3 whole months)

I studied.

Did you really Hmm?

Lazy, entitled little shit bags. They have nothing to say for themselves at interview . How can I hire them?

cupsofcoffee · 23/05/2021 08:04

I'd be glad not to be hired by someone so judgemental @Tiffanny Hmm

I never worked as a student for various reasons - it's never impacted on my career at all and I've been successful in every interview I've ever attended. I was in retail management for several years and now run a successful business of my own.

While I do get the argument for working as a teenager or student, it's certainly no guarantee of anything in adulthood.

CassandraTrotter · 23/05/2021 08:05

I've loads of year 11’s about to start job hunting. Send an email to local high schools.

They might be lazy entitled little shit bags but you haven't covered yourself in glory calling pub, waitress, hotel work and shop 'crap jobs'

Plenty of us have spent our lives doing these 'crap jobs' and might think you sound like an arrogant little shitbag yourself.

picturesandpickles · 23/05/2021 08:11

Been loads of articles in my local paper about struggle to get staff in hospitality, a lot due to Brexit, no qualified chefs etc.

Plus the impact of students being away/back/away/back so hard to commit to a job.

Plus younger people who commonly work in these places are not vaccinated, this will deter some.

Plus people are spending less as can't go out so the need to earn is lower.

There's a lot going on! Ultimately, if they want staff - put the wage up to make the job more attractive.

MsTSwift · 23/05/2021 08:14

Objectively jobs that are low paid and low skilled aren’t aspirational are they? Crap is harsh but can see why it’s used.

My two friends older teen sons are real workers always waitering chamber maid work etc. I think it’s so impressive and surely they are far more appealing to employers then those that don’t work at all.

Hellcatspangle · 23/05/2021 08:14

I don't think 16/17 year olds would look on indeed, they'd be more likely to check local Facebook pages for jobs. That's the type of people that would work weekends and all those jobs go on our local page (and get lots of responses)

Schmoana · 23/05/2021 08:16

Go to the nearest Wetherspoons, offer their staff a pound more an hour than they’re getting right now Smile

Faultymain5 · 23/05/2021 08:17

@anxietyanonymous

Our community facebook page has this type of part time job advertised often. And also her social media page for her cafe.

I agree my gut says indeed is for career type jobs.

Job centre?

Indeed have coffee assistant, retail, bar. It is the last place I’d look for a professional career job.

16/17 year olds no longer use Facebook. I have been informed. They sign up and then use snap chat. My DS doesn’t even like Snapchat but it’s what his mates are on. This could be regional though
lovelyupnorth · 23/05/2021 08:23

She's not paying enough.

Both my university going students now home for the summer both have got two jobs so working 6 days a week and the lowest pay at 19 is £9 an hour. And the 20 year old is on £11 Per hour in one of hers.

They could currently both walk into 20 other jobs. Brexit and Furlough has meant there just aren't any workers. Unemployment round here was pretty much nil prior to covid and brexit.

Now with so many Europeans going home there's just not enough people

A friend is looking for warehouse and admin staff. Monday to Friday 8.30 - 16.30 really good rates of pay. Can't find anyone.

Of course they do. They're not stupid.

Bit late all the Y11s local to use lined up jobs weeks ago. There's just loads more jobs than people willing to work them.
Bythemillpond · 23/05/2021 08:29

I think we are going to see this in all trades. Someone had the bright idea to make the courses only open to those with GCSEs and if you have GCSEs you aren’t really going to train as a chef or plumber or plasterer etc.

Ds wanted to do a trade and got 100% or very nearly 100% in all the assessments and tests for level 2 but was stopped from qualifying because he couldn’t get English Language GCSE which seemed to be about analysing a poem or a piece of prose which had no impact on whether he could do the job.
Only one person from his class did have the required GCSEs and he decided that he could go to university so although there were plenty of pupils who passed the course with good marks, none were qualified to enough to actually do level 3 and qualify.

lovelyupnorth · 23/05/2021 08:30

@LastOrdersMaura

But she's not asking for experience. What are all the teenagers doing for jobs these days? I'm sorry but you cannot be an eighteen year old with no experience and expect to get more than MW. I'm on 50p more than that and I am responsible for peoples lives (care work.)
Plenty our there paying more we've employed a 16 and 17 year old this summer on £7.50 an hour plus bonus

My own daughters 19 / 20 both back from uni have two jobs each and both worked in a cafe from 13 - 19 year old earnt £75.00 plus tips yesterday 8 hours.

That’s one of the first places they look!

Triphazard101 · 23/05/2021 08:39

I dont think many 16 or 17 year olds are on fb but their parents might be.
My local fb page often has parents asking if anyone knows of any vacancies suitable for their teen or advertising the teens babysitting/dog walking/tutoring skills.

My 17 year olds wouldn’t work for nmw. There was no need. There are plenty of places you can get more per hour (especially in hospitality) and even if it was nmw I think teens would rather work 12 hours on a Saturday or Sunday not 6 hours on both days.
At the very least she should consider employing 2 people for one day each to make it more attractive

But the choices aren't work shit hours for NMW or don't work at all.

There's plenty of jobs out there that don't require qualifications or experience and that pay more than NMW.

I've never worked for the minimum wage. Lots of retail and hospitality jobs pay above MW these days and throw in "perks" like uniform allowance, free meals etc.

Creativenina · 23/05/2021 09:54

Weekend work should change to how it used to be. Time and a half for Saturday and Sundays. Not everybody wants to work weekends as it is usually family time. Businesses need to offer an extra incentive if they want people to work weekends.
