£700 for a weeks pitch camping in Devon?

Laughingstock91 · 20/05/2021 10:57

We normally go camping in France in the summer and pay about £600 for 2 weeks on a lovely site with a pool in Provence. We take our own camping gear when we go.

£700 for 7 nights for a tent pitch in Devon? It’s basically a field with no other facilities bar a toilet block. That’s for us to pitch our own tent too! Not glamping or anything.

Aibu to think it’s taking the fucking piss? I am so over this poxy plague ridden island today. I know we are lucky to get any holiday but it’s a weeks camping - we save up all year to go to France & love it.

That was Cambridge definition

This is Collins

* If you describe someone as a profiteer, you are critical of them because they make large profits by charging high prices for goods that are hard to get*

Neither say illegal.

I’m afraid you’re wrong

@EssentialHummus - I am also a geography graduate.... I can colour in maps and everything Sad ... I'll hand back my pom bears & naice ham and be on my way.

Did I at least spell it correctly?

EssentialHummus · 20/05/2021 18:27

time of course you’re a Geography grad, even better Grin

I’m giggling because 1) I’m foreign and have horrendous UK geography; I once drove to Blackpool and back in a day (from south London) because I’d decided it was just past Birmingham (spoiler to anyone reading: it isn’t). 2) We usually holiday abroad in a posh Cretan villa but in light of current circs are going on a big multi-family holiday to... Pembrokeshire. My god DH is sulking Grin. I’m being very cheerleader about how much fun we’ll have, how our daughter will make precious memories with her friends etc etc - but I’m a bit hysterical about it on the inside so any mention of a nice holiday on the Welsh coast and I’m off. So you cheered me up, anyway.

I have a two bed apartment in Devon I let on Airbnb I only charge £450 for a week, thinking I should put my prices up 😂

LowlandLucky · 20/05/2021 18:31

I booked last September, 3 weeks ago the site got in contact with me to tell me they were cancelling my booking but i could re-book for £375 more, i refused. Take note of those places that are ripping families off and don't use them next year. Many British businesses that rely on tourism will struggle 2 years from now as everyone goes back over seas to the Costa's because they were ripped off in 2021

mumwon · 20/05/2021 18:44

Out of interest - those of you that have double booked - will you pay in full for your cancelled British holiday?

girasol · 20/05/2021 18:56

I’ve sort of double booked - hopefully going to Spain towards the end of July, if that doesn’t happen we have 2 weeks in two places in Norfolk (1 week in each) booked mid-Aug. So if we do go to Spain we will cancel Norfolk but will give a minimum of 2.5 and 3.5 weeks’ notice. I can’t imagine they’ll have any problem finding someone else to book those weeks (and in fact I’m confident I could find someone to take over the bookings if they wanted, they we both very lovey). I’m lucky my employer is flexible about when I take time off, but if this weren’t the case I would still ensure I gave a minimum of 2 weeks notice even though my bookings let me cancel up the day before.

As I said up-thread, yes I will. I've already paid both on full and will not be requesting a refund for either. I luckily booked my UK one before the silly prices though.
Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/05/2021 19:30

On the subject of T&Cs I've also noticed that, along with the "late cancellation" offers, more are saying "pay at the property" this year

So I'm hoping there won't be a load of stories from those who arrive to be told there's been "a mistake" and that their room's been sold to someone else ... only "Oh look, we have just one left, but it's 50% more" Hmm

Whythesadface · 20/05/2021 19:34

We booked family room, £70 a night family 4 Premier Inn, London....
That;s a night, so pleased it was so cheap.

Pinkylemons · 20/05/2021 19:40

It’s a rip off. We have a seasonal pitch but the cost for 2 adults and 2 kids on a standard pitch on our site is £36 per night. It’s on the south coast near to the beach.

Calmdown14 · 20/05/2021 19:49

I've booked Northumberland in August for£14 a night.
These silly prices seem to apply mostly to the most popular spots of the most popular areas.
There's still a huge amount on offer at normal prices

Sheffieldcoolingtowers · 20/05/2021 20:00

Interesting! I’ve just looked at a place that’s opened near my family and they are charging £315 for a week end of July. Might have to book!

Oh- I adore Northumberland. It's my favourite part of the UK. So intensely beautiful. Have a lovely time. :)
Runnerduck34 · 20/05/2021 20:16

No idea on cost of camping pitches but it does sound high.
I was looking at holiday cottages for 6 during school holidays, all really expensive and some not even that nice 2-2.5 k for 7 nights is average with cottages in Cornwall charging over 4k for a week. Its madness

Madhairday · 20/05/2021 20:49

Gosh so expensive, I've paid that for 2 weeks in Devon on a camping/caravan site with pool, cinema, entertainment and next to the beach and thought that was dear.

TheRebelle · 20/05/2021 20:54

We’ve paid £600 for seven nights in a “lodge” (ie big posh shed) in Cornwall, no way I’d be paying £100 a night for a camping pitch!

LigPatin · 20/05/2021 20:59

Go to Alderney - one of the little Channel Islands.
www.visitalderney.com/
Beaches to rival the tropics, great food, English speaking...
Camping available and loads of holiday lets and hotels.
And there's fuck all people there so you'll have the beach to yourself.

If you insist on booking a place smack in a popular coastal spot in August its bound to be pricey.

We have a Premier Inn family room booked, not too far from London, in the middle of August - total cost £91 for 3 nights!

Nonbibblebibble · 20/05/2021 21:04

That’s a fecking joke! Our usual - always booked months ahead campsite charges £8 per night per adult and £5 per kid. It hasn’t put its prices up...

LigPatin · 20/05/2021 21:04

Hotel rooms start at £50 a night. Camping starts at £10 a night (options to hire tent available) Holiday lets start at £75 a night.

And the campsite has loads of space,
Swings from trees, a farm shops, great showers and loos and a communal marquee for music plus a barn full of toys and sofas for rainy days

@Laughingstock91

Looking at Snowdonia at the moment! I am from south wales so tend to avoid holidaying at 'home' in wales as I am there a lot anyway but hey, its gods own country and all that...
Join us!! May I suggest Blackthorn Farm on Anglesey as well? They changed ownership this year but it’s a lovely site.

In other news, one holiday company I know has increased their prices by 40% this year. I think it’s disgusting, personally.

LST · 20/05/2021 21:08

I've just paid 235 quid for 8 nights in conwy. There is no way I'd pay that for camping!

OneFootintheRave · 20/05/2021 21:50

@idontlikealdi

I got quoted 6k for a week in a bog standard 2 bed static in cornwall. Good luck to whoever is prepared to pay that/
@idontlikealdi - £6K a week for a static caravan! That can't be right surely? Shock
