To think that some things can’t go in the dishwasher?

I had a new cleaner come today. It was all mainly good and I was grateful for the help BUT she loaded the dishwasher and then I discovered all sorts of things that I never put in the dishwasher as I think they get slightly ruined - but maybe that’s just me? In particular:

  • wooden spoons and other wooden implements
  • my good quality chopping knives
  • my glass magimix blender

Or do other people shove everything in??

I've had 3 dishwashers and none of them have ever managed (with any dishwasher tablets) to wash anything that had porridge, mashed potato, or any sort of baked on food on it.

Never had an issue with any of mine? They sound faulty, what's the point of a machine that doesn't clean?

Scrap the food in the bin, put the dirty things in the dishwasher, comes up perfectly clean.

freakyfridays · 20/05/2021 17:24

I never soak anything, I just run the dishwasher every night so the longest dishes stay dirty is a day.

TheKeatingFive · 20/05/2021 17:25

Soaking anything with mash on it is a good idea.

OldTinHat · 20/05/2021 17:36

I bought a dishwasher two and a half years ago. I have not washed up a single thing since! If it goes in the machine and comes out damaged then tough luck! I don't have anything 'nice' to worry about though!

Atalantea · 20/05/2021 17:37

@foodiefil

My cleaner puts my plastic Joseph and Joseph chopping boards in but doesn't turn it on so I take them out if they're in when I get in.

I'd put everything on your list in tho 😏 I put in my kitchenaid blender jug. And wooden spoons.

Why? We wash ours in there?

We don't put in non stick or wooden or good knives

Runnerduck34 · 20/05/2021 19:04

Only things I dont put in are plates with gilt/ gold edge, posh glasses, saucepans that are too big and tupperware boxes as found out sometimes lids dont fit after dishwasher! .
Anything else that is dishwasher safe goes in.
Were the items she out in dishwasher safe? You just need to say to her it might nit have been obvious.

@LauraLovesLemons

Cleaners are supposed to clean your house, not tidy up your mucky breakfast things.
I assume that bizzare uninformed criticism was aimed at me @LauraLovesLemons?

I had a small pile of non-dishwashable items which I hadn't had time to handwash before she came. She knows not to wash anything up (I prefer her time to be spent cleaning) so I've no idea why she put them in the dishwasher and set it going.

Oysterbabe · 20/05/2021 19:42

I shove everything in. If I can fit it in then in it goes. My kids better watch themselves.

Ignoremeiaminvisible · 20/05/2021 19:51

Babies, Kittens and Puppies !!!!!!!

What are all these "rules" about what a cleaner is meant or not meant to do. Surely it's a contractual arrangement between two parties. I've made it clear what I want from a cleaner and, if my cleaner doesn't want to do it, we'll part company.

LongTimeMammaBear · 21/05/2021 08:46

I agree with you op but I have experienced that some people see the TV adverts where everything goes in - and even with burnt on bits of food. It has then me years to get DH to understand not to do this, then my kids. Tried it with the cleaner and got no joy. I now don’t leave any washing up items for the cleaner. Hose rule i that on the day the cleaner comes, once I’ve done the dishes, anything used gets washed and put away by whomever used it.

Aprilx · 21/05/2021 08:50

There are some things that don’t go in the dishwasher, however the things you mention can go in. If I couldn’t put my magimix parts in the dishwasher it would put me off using it!

deardia · 21/05/2021 08:54

You definitely shouldn't put wooden spoons according to my manual, I've seen online a lot of people do. I've been tempted to. So is it safe to put wooden spoons??
Nice mugs tea cups I won't put in, even though it states dishwasher safe, I had a mug get chipped in the dishwasher so won't be running the risk

TheKeatingFive · 21/05/2021 08:56

So is it safe to put wooden spoons??

Well I’ve been doing it for 15 years and no ill effects, so I’d say yes. 😆

ShutUpAlex · 21/05/2021 08:57

What’s wrong with putting “posh” knives in? My fiancée is a chef and his knives are worth thousands of pounds and they all go in the dishwasher. The Only thing that doesn’t go in is the skillet.

TheKeatingFive · 21/05/2021 09:01

Apparently it blunts knives, though I've never found that either.

I expect a chef is sharpening knives regularly so it wouldn’t matter.

ProcrastinationIsMySuperPower · 21/05/2021 09:07

Those mugs that change colour definitely don't go in the dishwasher. When my husband someone put one in ours, the coating came off and ended up stuck to lots of other things. I was very cross.

ProcrastinationIsMySuperPower · 21/05/2021 09:11

I do put wooden spoons in, and sharp knives... We've only had a dishwasher since Christmas though, I don't know any better!

honeylulu · 21/05/2021 10:02

Put your dishwashable stuff in before she comes (helps keep the kitchen clearer to load as you go anyway). Just tell cleaner that anything left out is not to go in dishwasher. She can wash it by hand if there's time or leave it to one side if she doesn't. The suggestion by pp to have a plastic washing up bowl for this purpose is good. Then cleaner can still crack on with scrubbing the sink and worktops.

But in answer to your main question, none of those things should go in the dishwasher. Ditto wooden chopping boards, nice glasses and anything we might need again the same day. We only run the dishwasher when it's full, every 2-3 days. Actually that's another thing, I wouldn't want the cleaner running a half empty dishwasher!

Wel my knives are only with a few hundred for the set. So maybe although great quality not amazing quality like the few grand ones. So are more easily damaged by the dishwasher?
