To think that some things can’t go in the dishwasher?

I had a new cleaner come today. It was all mainly good and I was grateful for the help BUT she loaded the dishwasher and then I discovered all sorts of things that I never put in the dishwasher as I think they get slightly ruined - but maybe that’s just me? In particular:

  • wooden spoons and other wooden implements
  • my good quality chopping knives
  • my glass magimix blender

Or do other people shove everything in??

I put everything in except lead crystal, as it goes all cloudy. Anything else is fair game.

BackforGood · 19/05/2021 23:23

YANBU

None of those go in my dishwasher either.

Toothdrama · 19/05/2021 23:23

Decent knives no
Bone handle knives no
Non stick frying pan no
Certain mugs and things that say not suitable for dishwasher

Also dont put your plastic egg storage containers in the dishwasher.... the heat melts them 🙈

Everything else is fair game

ceilingsand · 19/05/2021 23:25

It doesn't matter. Just tell her what you do and don't want. Simple.

GreyEyedWitch · 19/05/2021 23:25

We don't put pans or our good knives in the dishwasher. Wooden spoons are a goer in our house!

CassandraCross · 19/05/2021 23:27

YANBU I wouldn't put those items in either.

tulippa · 19/05/2021 23:27

Yanbu. Anything wooden, fancy knives, delicate mugs etc all stay out. Also water bottles as I have found they take on a chemical taste if they get washed in the dishwasher.

Oversize · 19/05/2021 23:27

Gilt edged plates and silver plated cutlery are hand wash only here. Ditto lead crystal and the carving knife. I bung wooden spoons in though.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 19/05/2021 23:28

Perhaps do the dishes/dishwasher before the cleaner comes?

Elouera · 19/05/2021 23:29

I agree with you OP. Some things can't cope with the heat and get damaged in the dishwasher.

I was mortified trying to help my MIL on one of our first meetings when I put her chopping board in the dishwasher. I assume it was poorly made and glued together strips, but the entire thing fell apart when I got it out!

Delicate, crystal glasses I don't put in, and good chopping knives- definitely NO!

ZenNudist · 19/05/2021 23:30

Can't put non stick pans or good knives but everything else including stuff on your list is fine. Wooden spoons i scrub off any residue first but dishwasher to get properly clean.

TheSmallAssassin · 19/05/2021 23:31

Yes, I wouldn't put any of those things in the dishwasher, but some people do, just have a word.

We make sure there are no dirty things left hanging around in the kitchen before our cleaners come, ideally washing it all up before they arrive or bunging what's left in the washing up bowl and putting it in the garden until they've gone Blush

DramaAlpaca · 19/05/2021 23:31

I wouldn't put wooden spoons or my blender jug in the dishwasher myself but wouldn't be too upset if someone else put them in.

However, I would actually be quite cross if someone put my good knives in there.

PickAChew · 19/05/2021 23:32

Yanbu.

Wood dries out and cracks in the dishwasher.

I had a cleaner put a cafetiere in, complete with coffee grounds (that ex h had left lying around). That was messy.

Notcontent · 19/05/2021 23:33

Ok - glad to see it’s not just me!

The chemicals in the detergent are really strong so they can damage some surfaces...

foodiefil · 19/05/2021 23:33

My cleaner puts my plastic Joseph and Joseph chopping boards in but doesn't turn it on so I take them out if they're in when I get in.

I'd put everything on your list in tho 😏 I put in my kitchenaid blender jug. And wooden spoons.

sbhydrogen · 19/05/2021 23:35

I always wash up my good knives knife by hand, but other than that the other items can go in the dishwasher. You just need to tell your cleaner what's a goer and what's not.

Notcontent · 19/05/2021 23:35

@DramaAlpaca yes, I am a bit upset about the knives as I take really good care of them.

AlwaysLatte · 19/05/2021 23:36

I put everything in except crystal too.

thatonesmine · 19/05/2021 23:39

The first we left DS alone while we went away for a few days he put the place mats in the dishwasher. They were the kind that are made of some kind of board covered in printed paper.

HesterLee · 19/05/2021 23:40

Why do you not put good knives in a dish washer? What happens to them that doesn't happen to ordinary knives?

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 19/05/2021 23:41

Crayons absolutely don't belong in the dishwasher. A black one fell in (according to my daughter), melted and ruined all the plastic stuff, and sadly my Joseph Joseph chopping boards. It left such a mess I could have cried 😑.

Other than that I'm not to worried about what goes in. My good knives seem fine as do my saucepans.

AlwaysLatte · 19/05/2021 23:41

We put the silver in too - just make sure it doesn't touch the alloy stuff.
I don't put water bottles in, either.
My husband's grandparents merrily stuck things in the dishwasher back in the 1950s and we still have lots of their china which didn't suffer (some of their different china did fade, but dishwasher detergent was pretty aggressive in those days!)

ScotsBaby2 · 19/05/2021 23:42

I've always put my JJ chopping boards in the dishwasher. Nothing has happened to them in 6 years.
AlwaysLatte · 19/05/2021 23:43

Oh yes I wouldn't put wooden chopping boards in as they're usually glued strips of wood. Ours are the plastic Joseph ones, mostly because they're slim and go in the DW.
