To think that some things can’t go in the dishwasher?

I had a new cleaner come today. It was all mainly good and I was grateful for the help BUT she loaded the dishwasher and then I discovered all sorts of things that I never put in the dishwasher as I think they get slightly ruined - but maybe that’s just me? In particular:

  • wooden spoons and other wooden implements
  • my good quality chopping knives
  • my glass magimix blender

Or do other people shove everything in??

I don't really think dishwasher duties belong to the cleaner, that's a bit like clothes washing....I would not expect a cleaner to do either. I'd sooner she spent that time hoovering in corners or making fresh beds.
Thinking about it I would not ask a cleaner to strip or make used beds either.

Maybe more Housekeeper duties if I had one!

Otherwise apart from the good glasses, the good knives and the good wooden boards, I shove it all in. Oh the fancy china plates with the gold on stay out too, but we never use those because they cannot go in the dishwasher.
I should have a word with myself. Hmm

myfuckingfreezer · 20/05/2021 08:41

I put good knives, no stick pans, cast iron in the dishwasher and nothing has ever been damaged. You're all making things too hard for yourself!

Pinkylemons · 20/05/2021 08:43

I put most things in. I don’t have wooden chopping boards I have the Joseph Joseph ones too and they’ve been going in the dishwasher for about 11 years.

SarahBellam · 20/05/2021 08:55

I’ve been putting my knives in the dishwasher for 20 years with no problems. I didn’t even realise that was a thing. Blender jug - yes. Day to day glasses - yes. Wooden spoons - yes. Wooden chopping boards - no, because it melts the glue. Crystal glasses - no. Everything else is fair game.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 20/05/2021 08:55

I hand wash quite a lot, but you can't expect a cleaner to remember everyone's different rules. Just ask her not to turn the dw on, then you can rescue anything you want to hand wash.

moynomore · 20/05/2021 09:01

@GlutenFreeGingerCake

I'm surprised people would leave washing up for the cleaner too, why not load the dishwasher after eating and wipe your fancy knives straight after using them then you won't have a messy kitchen.
Because my cleaner comes to, you know, clean.

Shocker - Different people have different agreements with their cleaners. Mine doesn't clean windows or skirting for example, but does clothes washing and loads the dishwasher.

Bumblebee1980a · 20/05/2021 09:02

I put our knives and pans in the dishwasher and yes they're really good quality. Wooden spoons also. It's a tricky one. Just tell her.

Because I've got better things to do.

@EmmaStone

Loads of stuff I wouldn't put in the dishwasher: Wooden anything - warps, splits, allows germs into the splits. Sharp knives - blunts them Pots and pans - bad for the coating, fills up the dishwasher too quickly Good glassware - could crack them and/or leave them cloudy Cast iron - could damage Baking trays - take up too much space and get cleaner by hand if stuff stuck to them.

I wouldn't ever leave washing up to be done by the cleaner - I try to leave the house tidy so they can actually clean.

Blimey

The whole point of the dishwasher is to save you from washing (and it's more energy efficient anyway), I'd rather put 2 loads one after the other than washing pots and pans by hand!

Never had any disaster so far.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 20/05/2021 09:46

yes @moynomore, shocker....different people do have different agreements, and if I had a cleaner that's how I'd roll with it!

And I wouldn't be bitching about it on here, I'd be discussing it like a grown up with the cleaner

HesterLee · 20/05/2021 10:07

The blades can go blunt or even develop tiny chips, and the handles can get damaged. The detergent is really corrosive, and being subjected to powerful jets of very hot water - it damages them. Damages cheap knives too but you might not care so much and also they might have plastic handles that can withstand the dishwasher better

Thanks Notcontent I'm getting my first dishwasher soon so tips like this are very handy.

Why not just clean around the toilet straight after using it Why not just vacuum the floor after walking over it Why not just change the bedding after sleeping in it

Etc etc etc

Hazelnut5 · 20/05/2021 10:21

I never used to put our Le Creuset casseroles in the dishwasher but then my DH spotted this on their website:

Dishwasher use
All pans with integral cast iron, phenolic handles or stainless steel knobs can be washed in the dishwasher. However, constant dishwashing may lead to some dulling of the enamel finish. This is not harmful and will not impair performance. When using the dishwasher always allow the cycle to finish before opening the door. This will ensure the pans are dried thoroughly.

Since then we’ve washed them in the dishwasher and they’ve come out looking great.

Disfordarkchocolate · 20/05/2021 10:24

I don't put wooden spoons etc in, or kitchen knives. My husband puts everything thing, it drives me mad.

Sciurus83 · 20/05/2021 10:26

The good knife and nice glasses (which I hide) don't go in. Everything else is fair game

Regularsizedrudy · 20/05/2021 10:27

She’s not a mind reader. Just tell her what you don’t want putting in Confused

viques · 20/05/2021 10:35

I feel guilty now, my poor little wooden spoons are always being shoved into the dishwasher. Blush

The only things that don’t go in are my soupmaker (electric), my wooden chopping boards (too big) , my filleting knife (too sharp - I would be scared in case i forgot about it and sliced open my hand) , my enamel colander ( retro and so cute) , my kitchen aid beaters ( washed by hand following cooks perk licking if it’s a cake mix) .

TurquoiseDragon · 20/05/2021 10:44

I wouldn't put my knives in the dishwasher, never have.

I would make dishwasher vodka, though..... 😁

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/05/2021 10:46

Nothing wooden goes in ours, ditto bone handled knives, or our very few remaining crystal glasses.

Just tell her what needs hand washing.

Ginandplatonic · 20/05/2021 10:48

I put everything in. If it doesn’t survive the dishwasher it doesn’t belong in my house.

Same
tcjotm · 20/05/2021 10:56

I think those are things she should’ve checked with you first. It’s survival of the fittest at my place and I quite enjoy testing the limits over washing them myself but they are my belongings and I know the risks.

I’d not put someone else’s wooden stuff or fancy blender bits in the dishwasher. Why risk it for a few mins of hand washing.

Me too.
minipie · 20/05/2021 11:07

If you’re picky about what goes in then you either need to tell her or load the dishwasher before she arrives.

I put wooden implements, good knives, mixer in the dishwasher. Only things that don’t go in are wine glasses, wooden chopping boards and cast iron pans. I try to load the dishwasher before the cleaner arrives though.
