Where the washing up goes

I know it may sound ridiculous but this is pretty much the only thing me and DP argue about.

One of us thinks that every thing should stay on the side piled neatly, pans soaking, cutlery in a bowl soaking. The other thinks majority should go in the sink waiting, pans soaking.

Who's right, who's wrong?

We do have a dishwasher, it gets used maybe twice a year. Disagreements haven't quite reached daily use levels yet.

Use the dishwasher. It’s slovenly to do it yourself with a cloth and Fairy. Please tell me you don’t have a dish drainer too. 🤣😳

ChristmasAlone · 16/05/2021 18:52

Dishwasher is integrated and was there when we bought. Who ever connected previously done a piss poor job and it drains under the sink connected to the U bend it connects but leaks to make sure it doesn't means taking off a jubilee clip from the washing machine and connecting the drainage pipe properly. It's a pain to use. It now just stores tea towels and sponges. A couple of times a year when we host or something and there's just too much it'll get connected and used.

Everything is quickly run under a tap and straight in dishwasher. If dishwasher currently running a cycle then everything stacked neatly by the sink
Lizsmum · 16/05/2021 18:55

Buy another jubilee clip? Get the drainage sorted? What a waste of time to have a non-working dishwasher.

Just buy any jubilee clip or get a plumber to sort it properly. I would never wash by hand whilst I have a dishwasher. Frees my time to do something else

That sounds like you had it a while like that. I can't understand the apathy. It's something of yours what would make life easier, but you are just ignoring it. Waste of money. Sell it of you don't want it and get cupboard instead or just get it sorted and get it used👀
Freecuthbert · 16/05/2021 18:59

On the side. I hate when someone dumps everything in the sink together, it means everything is sitting in filthy water and then it's all equally dirty! Plates with a few crumbs, bowls that have had cereal, drinking glasses etc are so easy and quick to wash up, wouldn't want them soaking with the dirty pans

ChristmasAlone · 16/05/2021 19:00

They can't stay connected at the same time. If it was a case of spending 50p on a jubilee clip we would have, the angle that the wastage pipes come out and where the connection are on the U bend mean they can't stay on at the same time. It is physically impossible. I

If dishwasher really not an option then I don't think it should be dumped in the sink. What if someone needs the sink or you both decide to leave it for days?

BarbaraofSeville · 16/05/2021 19:05

In that case, I'd pay to get the dishwasher and washing machine plumbed in properly if it was beyond the DIY capabilities of the household.

We had both draining through the same pipes in our old kitchen. It can be done.

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/05/2021 19:06

Why can’t they be connected at the same Time?

ThatIsMyPotato · 16/05/2021 19:07

Move house and get a dishwasher that works? Wink

Georgyporky · 16/05/2021 19:09

I find it incredible that you have a DW, & CBA to get it fully functional.

I very rarely take offence to anything but you can stuff calling me a fucking sloven for not owning a dishwasher.

I cannot afford one and have no room to keep one if I could.

RavingAnnie · 16/05/2021 19:13

Get the dishwasher properly plumbed in ffs. You will be very happy at money well spent.

Anything else that can't be dishwashed should go on the side obvs or you can't use the sink which is annoying. Pans that need soaking can be filled with water.

ThatOtherPoster · 16/05/2021 19:16

Has a plumber assessed the dishwasher situation? Or just your DP?

RandomMess · 16/05/2021 19:19

In the dishwasher and things that can't go in by then side of the sink.

RandomMess · 16/05/2021 19:20

Get a plumber in to sort out the under sink plumbing!

sweeneytoddsrazor · 16/05/2021 19:20

I don't have a dishwasher either @GroovyClementine no room for one although I often rack my brains trying to work out a way to fit one in. I also have a dish drainer. Quite a fancy pants double decker one with a cutlery holder at one end and a mug holder at the other. And my dish clothes are the Lakeland antibacterial machine washable ones.

LuckyMcDucky · 16/05/2021 19:20

On the side and get a plumber for dishwasher, if you have the money. Save on the washing up and arguments Wink

cupsofcoffee · 16/05/2021 19:24

Just wash up after use. Very few things actually need to sit and "soak" for hours on end, tbh.

We don't have a dishwasher as we have no space for one, and our kitchen is far too small to have dirty dishes stuff dumped on the side. There's only two clear surfaces in there as it is!

As soon as meals are over, someone goes in and washes up. If I use a cup/glass/plate through the day, I wash it up as soon as I take it through to the kitchen.

Merryoldgoat · 16/05/2021 19:40

A) get a plumber

B) sink empty and everything on the side until dishwashing is to be done.

ShirleyPhallus · 16/05/2021 19:44

Everything is quickly run under a tap and straight in dishwasher.

What a waste of water! Dishwashers work more efficiently when the plates are dirty. Don’t rinse!

MargosKaftan · 16/05/2021 19:58

Not in the sink. On the side until being washed, or else you need to remove them from the cold, slimy water to wash, but yes, get a plumber in to fix the dishwasher.

mainsfed · 16/05/2021 20:09

On the side, sink needs to be free.
