To think dark brown eyes aren’t common in white British people

Ds1 has dark brown eyes and due to his skin tone people just assume he’s white British rather than having a Middle Eastern father. My other children have a darker skin tone so people believe them. Aibu to think most people with dark brown eyes are usually from minority ethics background.

No

Inthesameboatatmo · 16/05/2021 11:00

Brown eyes are the most common around the world and blue eys second.
I'm a mix of English, Scottish and gypsy roma, and that combination makes me look Iranian I have large hazel eyes .
My siblings all have pale skin and light grey/blue eyes we all have the same father (Roma) but 2 of us have a different mum.
It's just genetics nobody can do anything about .

fairynick · 16/05/2021 11:00

I’m from North West of England where a lot of Irish migrant families came. Everyone round here has pale skin with brown eyes and hair, because of Irish Iberian heritage. YABU to think that most white people have brown eyes, simply because that is untrue and those with blue/green eyes are not in the minority.
However, YANBU at being frustrated at your sons race being assumed. I understand that must be tough and perhaps have an effect on his identity.

LondonJax · 16/05/2021 11:02

We're similar to you @toffeebutterpopcorn. My DM had dark brown eyes, my dad was grey/blue. We, the children, have dark brown, hazel and green eyes. My mum's mum and dad had blue and dark brown eyes respectively (her mum had mousey colour hair and her dad was a red head so a real combination). Most of her siblings had brown eyes, with a couple having hazel and one having blue. She was one of ten.

Our DS has brown eyes - I have hazel eyes and my DH is blue. His dad had brown eyes as does one sister.

Welliesandpyjamas · 16/05/2021 11:03

YABU
OP, you should do an eye colour tour of Wales 🙂 I come from a long line of brown-eyed, dark-haired people. In England, I have often been asked if I have a hispanic background.

BakewellGin1 · 16/05/2021 11:03

DH has green/brown eyes
Myself blue/green
Oldest DS blue/green
Youngest DS dark brown

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/05/2021 11:05

Total bollocks. I’m white and brown/black hair, dark brown eyes. I’m Celtic .

cReateAusername · 16/05/2021 11:05

@Soubriquet

Yabu

I know quite a few people who have dark brown/chocolate brown eyes

Now blue eyes with black hair, I find is rare

My dd has this ! Pitch black hair , dark skin and blue eyes!! People are so confused and assume she wears contacts

@Runaway3444

Sorry I didn’t realise how common it was but I definitely think people shouldn’t judge ethnicity solely by a persons skin tone.
But 80% of the U.K. population is white British, if he has a light skin tone I don’t think it is an unreasonable assumption?

My hair and eyes are just a few shades above black. There’s very little different between my iris and pupils. White British, both sides have lived in the same northern town for at least 150 years. Although I assume at some point we hailed from Wales as I have a welsh surname.

Surely with your youngest, say he has your colouring but your other children take after their father. If they continue to challenge you on your son’s ethnicity, ask why you would lie about his ethnicity.

Polkadotties · 16/05/2021 11:05

We are white My dad has brown eyes, he has dark brown hair and olive skin, he tans very well. My mum has brown eyes, she has light brown hair and fair skin. My sister has brown eyes, brown hair in between my mum and dad, olive skin and tans well. I have blond hair, blue eyes, fair skin that tans well.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 16/05/2021 11:05

DS has dark brown eyes and he is white. It's odd because neither his father nor I have dark eyes. Mine are bright bluey green and my ex husband's are light hazel.

BlueLovingGirl · 16/05/2021 11:06

DD has dark brown eyes as does her dad, and his dad and his dad.

BlueLovingGirl · 16/05/2021 11:06

DD is very white, very pale skinned.

YoutubeZoom · 16/05/2021 11:07

I am originally from Hungary. Everyone in my family has blue eyes. Slovak heritage I guess.
DH is British. He has brown-eyed family members, but he and DS have blue eyes.

Wbeezer · 16/05/2021 11:07

My family is Scottish but my mum and brother have dark brown eyes and my neice has red hair and dark brown eyes!

Tistheseason17 · 16/05/2021 11:09

I'm very pale, freckled with super dark eyes and one of my DC has darker skin and fuller lips unlike either parent.
I'm thinking about looking into my ancestry as I think this is super interesting and I suspect recessive genes are coming into play. Great life lesson to not judge a book by its cover. Evolution is pretty amazing.

Indoctro · 16/05/2021 11:09

My son has dark brown eyes like his father and they are both peely wally Scots

As pale as they come.

Worldwide2 · 16/05/2021 11:10

Yabu Brown eyes in white people are very common, I'd be here all day listing the people I know who are white with brown eyes.

RedcurrantPuff · 16/05/2021 11:12

My 15 year old son has dark brown eyes and olive skin, we’re white British. I am blue eyed and fair skinned.

So they should judge it by eye colour instead?
cookiecreampie · 16/05/2021 11:13

I'm white with dark hair and dark eyes, I have Spanish heritage far back though. My youngest child has very fair blond hair and dark brown eyes despite me and his dad both being dark.

This happens to me all the time. I am of similar ethnicity (and by the sounds of it, appearance) to your DC and everybody always assumes I'm white. To be fair to them, I do look white most of the time.
BluePeterVag · 16/05/2021 11:15

YABU. Lots of very dark brown eyes in white British people I know. Including a couple who have taken DNA tests and have 100% dna from European areas for the past however long it accounts for.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 16/05/2021 11:17

DP's are so dark, you can't see his pupils. He is also white, has freckles despite olive toned skin and when he had hair had mid brown hair with loads of red in it and a red beard. His Mum was strawberry blonde and his Dad was blonde with blue eyes - and both families can be traced back hundreds of years to Devon/Cornwall fishing villages and moorland. I suspect a pirate or travelling man got into the mix somewhere along the line

His daughter has strawberry blonde hair and brown eyes and his ex is darkhaired and blue eyed.

In short, eye colour means very little in terms of ethnicity.
