To think dark brown eyes aren’t common in white British people

329 replies

Runaway3444 · 16/05/2021 09:49

Ds1 has dark brown eyes and due to his skin tone people just assume he’s white British rather than having a Middle Eastern father. My other children have a darker skin tone so people believe them. Aibu to think most people with dark brown eyes are usually from minority ethics background.

@EastWestWhosBest

Do you mean like David Mitchell? Really dark brown?
David Mitchell is half Scottish and half Welsh, so all celt!
OhTheIronyOfItAll · 16/05/2021 10:47

A relative has traced our family tree back a couple of hundred years. One of my siblings has blue eyes, the others -and myself, have brown eyes.

yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2014/09/11/blue-most-attractive-eye-colour
“Blue has become the most common eye colour in Britain, overtaking the traditionally dominant brown eye colour,”

@Runaway3444

Sorry I didn’t realise how common it was but I definitely think people shouldn’t judge ethnicity solely by a persons skin tone.
Well yes one shouldn't presume to know someone else's ethnicity and shouldn't disbelieve someone who states what there's is.
Deux · 16/05/2021 10:48

It is believed, not sure how definite, that all blue eyed people have the same shared common ancestor resulting from a genetic mutation. And that prior to that all people had brown eyes.

Accidentallydeletedoopsss · 16/05/2021 10:48

Yabu. It’s the original eye colour before any blue and green mutations came about

FrozenVag · 16/05/2021 10:48

Haha no sorry

Everybody has brown eyes in my family and no forrin here!

Groovee · 16/05/2021 10:48

My dad had dark brown eyes and so do me and my siblings. My mum has hazel eyes. My ds has really dark brown eyes and so do my 2 nephews on my side and 2 of my nieces.

As far as we know my dad was from a very Scottish family.

reallyreallyborednow · 16/05/2021 10:49

Sorry I didn’t realise how common it was but I definitely think people shouldn’t judge ethnicity solely by a persons skin tone

But why would you judge ethnicity by eye colour, which is what you suggest?

EmpressSuiko · 16/05/2021 10:49

I have Middle Eastern heritage and I’m often asked where I’m from, I do have olive skin but I have grey/green eyes.
My husband has english/French heritage, dark brown eyes and very fair skin, my own children have my husbands skin tone and eyes so neither look like me very much at all. I also grew up with several friends with brown eyes and fair skin so I believe it’s fairly common from white people to have brown eyes. Statistically the majority of the world’s population has brown eyes, with blue, green, grey, hazel being much lower and obviously those with heterochromia like myself being an even lower %.

AlohaMolly · 16/05/2021 10:50

Another one here to say my best completely Welsh friend is almost black haired with dark brown eyes. I, on the hand, with a half Bangladeshi father, have mid brown hair and hazel eyes.

cupsofcoffee · 16/05/2021 10:50

@Oblomov21

48% uk

8% worldwide.

That is a bit odd, don't you think? Hmm

Why would it be odd?

Worldwide you have Africa and Asian ethnicities to consider, and the vast, vast majority of those people will have dark hair and dark eyes.

Whereas the vast majority of the UK population is white (celtic originally), hence the majority of us having blue or green eyes as opposed to brown.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 16/05/2021 10:51

My dad had very dark brown eyes. Black hair, pale skin. Very Scottish as far back as we could trace.

Aprilx · 16/05/2021 10:51

*white British

AlanThePig · 16/05/2021 10:53

@justanotherneighinparadise

I have a sibling with dark brown eyes, white skin. Completely Anglo Saxon.
DH had an ancestry test done which came back on Friday. He’s so Anglo Saxon it’s untrue. He has brown eyes.

Now my Dad looked Mediterranean. As a child in the 30s and 40s he suffered horrible racial abuse. After he’d died I discovered his parents married when my Nan was about 6 months pregnant and I wondered if Dad was actually Mediterranean and not my Grandfathers son. I did my own DNA test.

What I found amazed me. We were Irish descent, west coast. The ‘black Irish’ was very much a thing with theories of Spaniards and invasions. He was my Grandads son.
I didn’t get the brown eyes sadly but I did inherit thick dark hair. Genetics are rather strange.

Heckythump1 · 16/05/2021 10:53

Exactly 50/50 in mine and also m husbands family! Half have blue eyes and half have brown .... possibly blue eyes are slightly more common, but yes, british people definitely have brown eyes, what an odd idea that they don't?!

Mrsjayy · 16/05/2021 10:53

I have dark brown eyes I'm as far as I'm aware white Scottish.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 16/05/2021 10:53

YABU. Dh has dark brown eyes and is white British. My (white) father had very dark brown eyes.

donquixotedelamancha · 16/05/2021 10:55

Genetically, blue eyes are dominant. So if a blue eyed woman conceived with a brown eyed man, the odds are they child would have blue eyes.

That's not the case. Brown is dominat over blue.

www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/10/061023193617.htm#:~:text=The%20brown%20eye%20form%20of,quarters%20will%20have%20brown%20eyes.

You need both genes for blue for it to be expressed. If one parent is blue and the other is a borwn eyed carrier of blue (one brown gene, one blue but the blue is not expressed) then the offspring will (statistically) be 50, 50 of each. If the brown eyed parent has both genes brown then there is no chance of a blue eyed child.

BashfulClam · 16/05/2021 10:56

My grandmother had red hair and pale freckly skin and dark chocolate brown eyes. My white Scottish father had dark brown eyes. He also had black hair and tabbed easily…I also know several other people with dark brown eyes who are white.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 16/05/2021 10:57

Mum has very blue and dad very brown. We have brown, green and blue eyes (respectively).

CeeJay81 · 16/05/2021 10:58

My kids have dark brown eyes. I have very dark hair and does most of my family, I have multi coloured eyes. dh has brown eyes but sandy hair and pale skin. We are all white British, although my skin is darker than dh.

Longdistance · 16/05/2021 10:58

My dm has dark brown eyes. Although, originally from Hungary, after doing some research and a DNA test, my dm’s family are British heritage.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 16/05/2021 10:58

DP has brown eyes. he got them from his mother's side of the family, who can be traced back to living in the same village in the Southwest for 8 generations, none of whom had dark skin.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 16/05/2021 10:58

Out of my group of 8 female friends 3 have dark brown eyes and are white British. I don’t think it’s unusual.

NotThereNow · 16/05/2021 10:59

I went to school in rural Northern Ireland. Very little genetic diversity. I was practically the only one with brown eyes (white).

Recently at work someone alluded to how their team had hired a brown eyed person for the first time. Their point was it was some from a BAME background but was lost on me for a minute.
