To think this is really cruel?

My friend got a lockdown puppy Hmm last summer and is now having to go back to work in the office and is planning to leave her dog in a crate whilst she’s at work. I offered her the details of my dog Walker but at £15/day apparently that’s too expensive. I understand £75 a week is a lot of money but surely that should have been thought of at the time she got the dog?

I think it’s bad enough leaving a dog in the kitchen for 8 hours on it’s own, but to leave it in a crate seems extra cruel.

Am I being precious and the dog will actually sleep most of the time which is what everyone else seems to be saying? Friend pointed out it’s no different to leaving the dog downstairs whilst she sleeps for 8 hours.

Sadly the RSPCA won't be remotely interested.

Local subscribers to BorrowMyDoggy my might very well be interested though. Can you show their website to your 'friend' OP? Dog lovers who have a bit of spare time but are unable to have a dog of their own (and are smart enough to realise this!) are able to connect with local dog owners. We did this for a while and got very attached to our borrowed dog. It can work really well for both parties.

@Creamcrackersandricecakes

...and now we're up to 3% of people who think this is perfectly reasonable. So about 18 people who've responded to the poll think locking a young dog in a cage for 16 hours a day is acceptable. I fucking despair.
You could post about kicking kittens for fun and there would be vites in a favour. 🤦

She's going to have to bath the dog, daily, as it'll have shite all over itself. Sounds cruel to me. Would be better to rehome the dog than treat it like that. Poor dog.

AhNowTed · 16/05/2021 13:51

Cruel and disgusting.

A dog is not a toy you take out when it's convenient.

😡

RedcurrantPuff · 16/05/2021 13:54

Horrendous

It won't last. She'll do it for a few days and then re-home it, or miraculously find the money needed for daycare.
WilsonMilson · 16/05/2021 14:04

She’s putting it in a crate because, at that age, the dog will chew up the house with boredom, it’s fuck all to do with ‘safe space’. Prison, more like.

Poor dog, it makes me so angry. There are bound to be poor wee doggies all over the place in this situation with stupid owners not thinking through going back to work after lockdown, and then being unwilling or unable to fork out for proper care.

It’s outrageous that any dog should be left in a crate all day.

JaquelineBeanstalk · 16/05/2021 14:12

It's fine to put a dog in a crate for certain periods of time. I really dislike the use of the word "cage". My two know this is their "house" where they can choose to go for some chill-out time, or where they sleep at night. Occasionally during the day they'll be put there for up to an hour, while I have a shower or nip to the shops. But 8 hours every day is completely unreasonable.

hangsangwitch · 16/05/2021 14:20

I don’t understand why locked in the crate at all? Our pup has free roam of the kitchen/diner for the odd couple of hours we are out. She usually chooses to nap in her crate anyway, even when we are here, and also at night, but we don’t ever lock her in it now as there is no need (unless there is a delivery or something to keep her safe).

What’s the point of having a dog if you’re going to lock it up!

Unsure33 · 16/05/2021 14:24

A lot of people are missing the point that people who have crate/ cage trained their dogs are still condemning this proposal . That is not what it is intended for , at all . And as I said it will not work and the dog could actually hurt itself as it will be bored and very stressed.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 16/05/2021 14:25

My friend got a cockapoo as she was ill and had decided when she recovered she would only go back to work part time. But sadly she never recovered and died. Her boyfriend kept the dog but he works full time so me and a few other friends used to go and take him out during the day except he was so boisterous none of us could handle him. The boyfriend was just blind to it even though we all told him.
So unfair on the dog who will certainly be lonely.

Unsure33 · 16/05/2021 14:26

@hangsangwitch

Probably because they are worried about chewing and mess .sounds like a young dog so no doubt that will happen whatever they do .

How is it even going to go to the toilet ?

Unsure33 · 16/05/2021 14:27

@cupsofcoffee

I agree . It will end up being rehomed .

cupsofcoffee · 16/05/2021 14:28

I don’t understand why locked in the crate at all?

Because many young dogs will chew and become destructive through boredom if they are left alone and "loose".

Peace43 · 16/05/2021 14:33

That makes me really sad for the poor dog. My Bichon is 3 and apart from a walk in the morning and afternoon he really just lazes about all day. But that includes moving from sofa to bed to windowsill, having a drink, popping out for a wee, etc.. being trapped in a crate sounds like being locked in a cell. Maybe ok overnight but not all day too Sad

Better for owners for the dog to to be bored and alone shut in the cage. Sad
Darbs76 · 16/05/2021 14:35

Unreasonable to do this. People who work shouldn’t get a dog unless prepared to pay a dog walker or have family come in

They should get 2 and provide adequste space to play. That's what we did (usually it was 3) and dogs were happy and non destructive.
WiddlinDiddlin · 16/05/2021 14:39

Buy her a gift of a pet camera that sends alerts to her phone when the dog is making a noise, and actually set it up for her.

Then she can see how distressed her dog is all day long, and hopefully she'll see sense, or the neighbours will get arsey, dog will hurt itself getting out of the crate, eat her house etc etc.

Point out if you like that addressing separation anxiety AFTER the dog has experienced ongoing extreme distress for days or weeks is FAR more expensive than preparing the dog properly for being left (behaviourist costs, dog sitter/walker/daycare costs, drugs costs. It adds up to £££ or even ££££!)

Cockerpoos are horrific for separation anxiety, poodles are companion breeds that want to be with people and be busy, so are cockers, both suffer immensely with frustration, FOMO, and anxiety when left!

cupsofcoffee · 16/05/2021 14:41

Sadly, that's why crate training gets such a bad name, because far too many people don't understand what a crate should be used for.

Giving your dog a safe space to sleep is a good thing. Locking them in there all day so they don't eat your house is not.

Bobbiebigbum · 16/05/2021 14:41

Yes it's cruel. Would she like to be locked in a cage 8 hours a day every day all week. I doubt it.

Cherrysoup · 16/05/2021 14:43

RSPCA won’t give a shit unless the dog is starving/on the point of death./dead. I could not be friends with such a shit head. This really upsets me. Poor bloody dog.

ilovesooty · 16/05/2021 14:47

I'd tell her exactly how repulsive she is and what you think of her plans. Then tell her you'll be reporting her and publicising her unacceptable behaviour.

Why would you want to be her friend?

2bazookas · 16/05/2021 14:52

The dog will quickly become very neurotic, probably start chewing its own feet or tail raw. So pretty soon she'll come home to an injured dog soaked in its own pee/shit in a very bad temper.

So she'll [probably dump it pretty soon.

Meanwhile you could report her to the RSPCA , crating a dog all day every day is animal cruelty for the above reasons.
