To think this is really cruel?

My friend got a lockdown puppy Hmm last summer and is now having to go back to work in the office and is planning to leave her dog in a crate whilst she’s at work. I offered her the details of my dog Walker but at £15/day apparently that’s too expensive. I understand £75 a week is a lot of money but surely that should have been thought of at the time she got the dog?

I think it’s bad enough leaving a dog in the kitchen for 8 hours on it’s own, but to leave it in a crate seems extra cruel.

Am I being precious and the dog will actually sleep most of the time which is what everyone else seems to be saying? Friend pointed out it’s no different to leaving the dog downstairs whilst she sleeps for 8 hours.

Has there been any further development OP? I’ve been thinking about this poor dog. I have a cockerpoo and she goes mad if I leave her for more than 4 minutes.

As per the PP who said the dog will bark all day. And howl. The neighbours will complain if they are at home all day. Alternatively, can you take in the puppy (because the dog will be under 2 years old, won’t it?) as your second dog?

Op, I was just watching an episode of The Dog Rescuers about the RSPCA and an officer visited a house where two largish labrador puppies were locked in a cage because they were boisterous indoors. He said it was unacceptable. The woman gave them up and he took them away.

Please call the RSPCA.

God I wish I hadn't opened this thread. This will really upset me worrying about this poor dog :(

Agreed. It’s heartbreaking.
OP, could you please come back and tell us what you plan to do?

Cruel report her, this is not on.

Call the council - whoever you pay rates to- say the dog barks ALL. DAY. LONG, while she is at work. They will remove the dog to a pound where a shelter/ individual can adopt it. Someone who does not see a dog as a thing you can put away and pull out whenever it suits you. Or, steal the dog and 'donate' it to an animal shelter for adoption.

So many of us seem to agree with this post. It’s so awful but true that we don’t have confidence in RSPCA to report this incident. I just wish I knew of another responsible animal welfare organisation which would do something. Ideas anyone? 🤔

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop

Word of warning - the RSPCA are shit and will do fuck all. Well actually they might call you a few days later to ask for a monthly donation but don't expect to do anything about the dog

Absolutely this...We reported a dog cruelty case and they wouldn't even investigate BUT had the temerity to ask for a donation. I was speechless....

It’s a cockerpoo I think. Who could I report to?

That breed is very social and they are known to suffer from separation anxiety. It’s very cruel, especially as it’s had people there all day before now.

New not bed 🙄

Sorry @SherbrookeFosterer I don't agree. For us it was the perfect time to manage a bed puppy. We'd lost our previous dog and the timing for us was correct.

Just because some pet owners are irresponsible, don't assume all are.

The sale of pets, especially dogs, should have been banned during lockdown.

If its true, then report her to the RSPCA without delay. Cruelty to animals can lead to a criminal conviction.

Very cruel, did you challenge her decision?

My dog is 3 and I ve always been home with her while kids and dh go to school. Everyone was home for lockdown.

After lockdown she got really really sad and missed the kids so much....and I was still with her. Got to the stage I just brought her with me or stayed at home for 2 weeks then I d pop to the shops, gone for 30 mins ish...just to get her re adjusted.
ill she also goes to day care once or twice a week to socialise. Same dogs are there and they have a ball and she loves it.

Long story short yes its cruel....I dread to think how my one would be in that situation

@Scratchpostkitty

The RSPCA will be useless. Unless it's dying of starvation or it's leg's hanging off or something, forget it. Their welfare standards are incredibly low.

I agree with you on the part about the rspca being useless and how poor their welfare standards are but I disagree about the bit about not taking a healthy dog.... you can guarantee that if they think there's some easy money to be madefrom taking an expensive dog (albeit a mongrel) they would be there to take it away like a shot!

Yes the RSPCA are rubbish, they’ll do nothing

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop

My friend has "crate trained" (whatever that means) her lockdown mongrel cockapoo...I'm not quite sure what the benefits of this are because when he's let out he jumps up all over me, all over the sofas, jumps around the back of the sofas landing on people's heads, barks in your face if you love, chews everyone's shoes... and she will sit there saying "isn't he such a well behaved dog" Confused

People normally say crate trained when what they mean is the dog won't make a mess in there, will be let out to go wee , poo etc.

@ThankYouHunkyJesus

Report it to who?! Why is Mumsnet first reaction always "report it"!

Exactly🙄 ,

ovs she shouldn't be doing this, maybe she could create a "safe space" in one bigger area instead of in crate locked up,so the dog has freedom but cannot roam whole house/flat etc probably for fear of destruction or if not toilet trained completely.

FlamingHot · 18/05/2021 04:18

Exchange the word crate for cage and you get a more realistic statement about what is happening. Your friend sounds like a selfish idiot.

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep · 18/05/2021 03:10

I reported a dog in the same circumstances to the RSPCA and they did nothing at all about it. This is cruel though and I would lose all respect for her.

Report
Gothichouse40 · 18/05/2021 02:59

I have no idea why so many people bought dogs during Lockdown. Did they think they'd never have to return to work? They would be better finding a good home for the dog.

Poor thing I don't think people think things through when getting a dog sometimes! She could try website called 'borrow my dog" (I think) My friend who doesn't want a full time dog of their own at the moment (mainly does it for her child who loves dogs), takes it out for walks etc the two hours she has it, with her child after nursery. Apparently this dog gets looked after by another person 2 other afternoons for free too, it's a voluntarily thing.
