Just a post about being a Northerner/Southerner which made me think - what do you consider as “The North”? I’ve never had a solid answer for this and just wanted to know the general census on this.

In England I say anywhere North of Cheshire is ' The North', ' The Midlands' start in Staffordshire and ' The South' is Bristol and below😀

sweetkitty · 15/05/2021 11:25

Was going to say Perth way Grin but I’m in the central belt of Scotland

MiddleClassProblem · 15/05/2021 11:25

@SleepingStandingUp 🤣 It’s warmer down here though lol. That might be our only gain...

SleepingStandingUp · 15/05/2021 11:26

Those saying Birmingham, you do realise Birmingham is comparatively South in an area helpfully labelled for you as The Midlands because it's in the Middle

user143677433 · 15/05/2021 11:26

Inverness /Aberdeen

Dishwashersaurous · 15/05/2021 11:26

North of Watford gap services.

They don't have gravy in their chippies!! It's bad enough there's a lack of cheese in the Midlands ones.. I miss the North

DoingItMyself · 15/05/2021 11:27

Manchester is definitely north. Sheffield is north. Chester is just about north. Stoke, Nottingham, they are Midlands. Lincoln's a weird one - midlands or 'south accidentally misplaced on the map'. Draw a line through Milton Keynes across the map, below that is south.

Ellpellwood · 15/05/2021 11:28

Of course Manchester is Northern. What else is it? It's not in the Midlands!

"The North" or "Northern" are generally used to refer to England and English people. I'm from Huddersfield originally and consider somewhere between Stoke or Sheffield the start of the North.

DoingItMyself · 15/05/2021 11:28

Yorkshire chip shops don't have puddings or pies. What's that about? You have to drive all the way home before you can get some supper.

Chemenger · 15/05/2021 11:28

Inverness and points north. I would put Aberdeen in the northeast, not the proper north.

OwlBeThere · 15/05/2021 11:28

The bit beyond the wall.

Nataliafalka · 15/05/2021 11:28

Past Nottingham. Sheffield is very definitely north

Lincoln is an odd one. I'd say Midlands but I'd say Skegness is North
SavingsQuestions · 15/05/2021 11:28

Birmingham's north of Oxford though 😁. So definitely North...

MishMashMummy · 15/05/2021 11:28

@MightNeedABiggerGlass

Depends where we are talking about, in my humble opinion Scotland would be the Highlands, England would be the Midlands, UK would be Yorkshire.

I'm from Yorkshire and would describe myself as a northerner, plus I'll talk to anyone anywhere about anything Wink

‘Scotland’ and ‘the Highlands’ are definitely not interchangeable. The Highlands is the area north west of the highland boundary fault.
actiongirl1978 · 15/05/2021 11:30

Stockport and above. I grew up there and thank God I got to leave it and move to the south coast.

Ponoka7 · 15/05/2021 11:30

Anywhere above Crewe. Draw a line from Crew and that's North. Although technically Shropshire might be North, I don't think of it as.

Shropshire is Midlands
MiddleClassProblem · 15/05/2021 11:31

@MishMashMummy The Highlands is what Americans think Scotland is like 😂🥄🥣

MrsMoastyToasty · 15/05/2021 11:32

Anywhere north of Michael Wood Services on the M5. Only joking! (I live near Bristol).
In my head I think of 2 places as The North depending on whether we are in England or Scotland, where my dh comes from.

I England its anywhere north of Manchester but in Scotland its anywhere north of Loch Ness

Mooselaurels · 15/05/2021 11:32

Anything north of Oxford.

SixDegrees · 15/05/2021 11:32

Starts at about Manchester.

MiddleClassProblem · 15/05/2021 11:32

@OwlBeThere

The bit beyond the wall.
In your garden?
Dishwashersaurous · 15/05/2021 11:33

depends if you are being binary just north/south. Or whether breaking into other areas e.g north/Midlands/ South etc
