Just a post about being a Northerner/Southerner which made me think - what do you consider as “The North”? I’ve never had a solid answer for this and just wanted to know the general census on this.

Reminds me of a thread a couple years ago when someone couldn't believe the weather in Edinburgh was so different from the weather in London. It was hilarious!

Londonmummy66 · 18/05/2021 16:04

Camden

IntoAir · 18/05/2021 20:57

@Londonmummy66 wins the thread [grin Grin Wine Gin

Genuinely anything North of the Watford gap, Northampton even has North in the title!

Watford Gap is further north than Northampton. So by your definition Northampton is in the south.

MangoM · 19/05/2021 08:12

I'm from the Midlands so that's my dividing point for North and South. For some unknown reason I consider my hometown as being North and anything East/West as South Hmm I guess that's probably come about because growing up we were the furthest North compared to all other family.

Apologies if this has already been posted. This is an interesting video from the map men about the north south divide.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 19/05/2021 08:16

I live in NE England, about 60 miles from the Scottish border. I would say Yorkshire up (although Yorkshire is the south to me Grin)

KimonoKim · 22/05/2021 02:50

On the m1 jct 25 notts north says welcome to the north south Yorkshire and north Derbyshire sheffield born living Cornish life so been up down a lot

londonscalling · 22/05/2021 03:34

I always said anything north of the M25 but realistically it's probably Coventry and anything further north.

londonscalling · 22/05/2021 03:35

@Hankunamatata

Dad always jokes that southerners dont think theres life past the Watford gap.

Is there then?

Tealightsandd · 22/05/2021 16:09

That's a shame that your dad is so ignorant. Wonder what motivates the people who make prejudiced 'jokes'?

It's been said on this thread already.

I am from Portsmouth - anything north of the island is the north

weegiepower · 22/05/2021 20:50

Anywhere from midlands up

accentdusoleil · 22/05/2021 20:56

When you see the PIES graffiti on the green bridges

52andblue · 22/05/2021 21:02

@funnylittlefloozie

Potters Bar and upwards. The North is a vast and sinister place.
Yes. I grew up in Kent ans was taught this as a child. I've lived in Scotland for 35 years now :)
elenacampana · 22/05/2021 21:03

@MishMashMummy - that’s because we are. I’m from Liverpool, next door to Manchester, and wouldn’t tolerate being labelled a southerner for anything.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 22/05/2021 21:07

North Pole? Scotland? I don't know.

DH is British and he says past Birmingham so I take his word for it

Germolenequeen · 22/05/2021 21:36

Another vote for North of Watford gap.
I'm 58 and grew up in Berkshire with a Nana in Yorkshire so I'm definite about this 😄

Above Midlands, things start to look and sound rather different

Honeybee2021 · 23/05/2021 00:45

Strange question only revealing low IQ of some posters.

If driving on the motorway towards Birmingham, signs say “The Midlands”. If driving from Birmingham northwards on M6 signs say “The North”. If driving towards London signs say The South” and towards Bristol, “The South-West”.

Strange response only revealing a lack of sense of humour 🙄
