Just a post about being a Northerner/Southerner which made me think - what do you consider as “The North”? I’ve never had a solid answer for this and just wanted to know the general census on this.

I'm in Staffordshire. I class us as the Midlands. Anything up from us the North and below us the South

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 15/05/2021 12:05

Northern England starts about Sheffield upwards IMO. Perhaps not geographically but Yorkshire feels like the north (I say that as a Northumbrian).

Peregrina · 15/05/2021 12:06

Stoke, Nottingham, they are Midlands.
But they are definitely not south.
Stoke is Midlands, Banbury is Midlands, but Stoke is North and Banbury is South.

NeedNewKnees · 15/05/2021 12:07

Roughly from Liverpool to Hull but it's not a straight line. Sheffield can just about squeak in.

North Wales is Flintshire, Denbighshire and Caernafonshire and Anglesey.

Dunno about Scotland.

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 15/05/2021 12:07

H is from the South and I'm from the North. We consider Birmingham the middle
I'm further North but I would consider Liverpool and Manchester to be northern cities

dottiedodah · 15/05/2021 12:07

Well we are here about on the South Coast ,so anything really! I personally think anything north of Watford Gap .

Mrsjayy · 15/05/2021 12:08

Mrsjayy

*Do people from Birmingham say they are Northeners?

No. They're Midlanders*

Fair enough Smile

Florelei · 15/05/2021 12:08

Draw a line between Liverpool and Hull and that’s what I consider to be the north.

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 15/05/2021 12:08

Family in Scotland think England is the divide so only Scotland is the North
I guess those in the Highlands have a different view

SleepingStandingUp · 15/05/2021 12:08

@KikiniBamalam

East Midlands, midlands, is definitely north in my book.
How does that work? It's literally labelled the Midlands as is the Mid Lands as I'm the middle? So not north or south, the middle.
CoastAlong · 15/05/2021 12:08

@Cailleachian

Anywhere past Crianlarich
I'd agree with this. I'd probably say Tyndrum though! Not that there's much in it.
Pinkdelight3 · 15/05/2021 12:08

That cuts off Cheshire. I know it has posh bits, but it's still north.

SleepingStandingUp · 15/05/2021 12:10

Stoke, Nottingham, they are Midlands.

But they are definitely not south.

Well no, because they're Midlands

boys3 · 15/05/2021 12:10

@Buffaloskull

Anything north of the river Tyne.
The clearly correct answer Grin Grin
Sandsnake · 15/05/2021 12:11

At Bournemouth football games we used to sing ‘you dirty Northern bastards’ at Southampton fans...Grin

That aside, to me it’s north of around Stoke or Derby.

youshallnotpass9 · 15/05/2021 12:12

I really think it depends on where you are from.

Me- South of London anything past the Watford Gap
Partner - Derby Anything past Yorkshire
Best Friend - Yorkshire - Scotland, till she moved to the highlands and now its probably the Artic

1990s · 15/05/2021 12:12

Sheffield and above.

lastqueenofscotland · 15/05/2021 12:13

Sheffield and up

1990s · 15/05/2021 12:13

@SleepingStandingUp

Stoke, Nottingham, they are Midlands.

Well no, because they're Midlands

The Midlands is a place!! People always forget about us Smile

randomkey123 · 15/05/2021 12:13

My Mum came from Berwick on Tweed.

I'd call that and above it as "up north" as we're in Gloucestershire.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 15/05/2021 12:15

I think this map is correct.

To ask what you consider “The North”?
AnnaMagnani · 15/05/2021 12:15

MargaretThursday · 15/05/2021 12:15

RB68 · 15/05/2021 12:15

Standrewsschool · 15/05/2021 12:17
