To be surprised she couldn't use the oven?

Last night partners sister came round and as I was on a potential new job call, I asked her to turn the oven on (Had a chicken in there already). When I got off the call, I checked and saw it had not been turned on. Aibu to say a grown woman should be able to turn an oven on?!
She said she thought she had done it.

It’s not spiteful at all - it’s simply a lot of people don’t agree with you and have put your nose out of joint. Why ask AIBU if you won’t accept that you are?

You were spiteful about her though.

Neonprint · 13/05/2021 21:51

Depends what it's like. My parents have a double oven and the option ls aren't the same as the one I have
So it's not clear to me what knob does what. It's not that I can't use an oven it that I don't know how other people's ovens work. Same as yuur partner's sister. You sound really judgemental.

Arrowheart · 13/05/2021 21:51

If you had time to ask her to turn the oven on, you had time to turn it on yourself.

Neonprint · 13/05/2021 21:52

Yep this exactly.
GrumpyHoonMain · 13/05/2021 21:53

I come from an Indian background and ‘baking’ is often still done the old fashioned way on a low flame on the hob in a modified dutch oven, and so know many people who have no idea how ovens work and even when they have them haven’t used them.

SirenSays · 13/05/2021 22:05

I tried to turn on an oven once at a house sit and the damn thing started beeping at me. Nothing I did would make it stop!

Moonwatcher1234 · 13/05/2021 22:18

OP, I am an professional person who has worked in the city etc...but...I am so useless at things like this! Not sure why but tech throws me including using appliances that I am not used to. Cut your sis in law some slack...may be dyspraxic or something similar

purplecorkheart · 13/05/2021 22:23

My mother bought a new oven recently. I have used loads of different oven but actually need to read the instructions for it. It does not follow basic logic and each plate seems to work differently

UpTheJunktion · 13/05/2021 22:42

@Zzzzzzxxx

My husband who is a fantastic cook. When he come to uni he decided he was going to make every one a roast dinner. When it came to eat dinner everything was raw. He didn’t realise You had to turn on a cooker as he had grown up with an aga 😂😂😂
🤣😂😂🤣
HahaAreyouSerious · 14/05/2021 00:43

Did she not set out the silverware to your liking, too?

What a stupid thing to get so annoyed about.
Assuming your oven has more than one dial it's an honest mistake to make. Where's your partner? Why isn't he turning your oven on and why are you leaving it to his sister to cook your families dinner?

See how fast you can come up with ridiculous assumptions when given ridiculous posts to work with?

Hope to god it didn't spoil your entire month.

Sidesaladofchips · 14/05/2021 00:52

YABVU
-You clearly just don't like your SIL and just coming across as petty, petty, petty.
-You are getting annoyed because the majority of responses aren't joining in with your bitchy bitching about your SIL.
-But ultimately YABU for putting raw chicken in a cold oven. AIBU to say a grown woman should know how to cook some chicken?!

ConfusedAdultFemale · 14/05/2021 06:53

Why would you have a chicken already in the oven? You’re supposed to pre heat it before food goes in, chicken sitting at room temp in an oven doesn’t sound the safest either….

ConfusedAdultFemale · 14/05/2021 06:54

Also frequently think I’ve turned my oven on when I’ve not. Usually because I’ve forgotten the switch on the wall. Odd that you’d think it was abnormal for that to happen.

ThinWomansBrain · 14/05/2021 06:58

had this in a holiday cottage - worked it out eventually (3rd or 4th time there)
if the chicken was in the oven, did you cook it from cold without preheating oven?

DenisetheMenace · 14/05/2021 06:59

Every oven is different: ours is computerised, dozens of programmes, connects to the internet.
I know how to use the fan oven and grill 😁

Bluntness100 · 14/05/2021 07:03

I’m not sure it’s ok to call posters spiteful when you start a thread like this about your sister in law. That’s the pot calling the kettle black

I’d like to know where the partner was in all this. I’m really hoping it’s not a bloke who was there but deemed incapable of turning the oven on by right of having a penis.

Butchyrestingface · 14/05/2021 07:12

Aibu to say a grown woman should be able to turn an oven on?!
She said she thought she had done it.

I thought this thread was going to be about a woman who didn't know who to work an oven per se.

It's an easy enough mistake to make, surely? She was dealing with someone else's oven so the settings may not be as intuitive to her as they are to you. I've made the same mistake with my own oven more than once.

This is a bit unpleasant unless there is some humungous tortured backstory.

Butchyrestingface · 14/05/2021 07:23

I sense a new thread coming on...

"To be surprised grown woman doesn't know how to cook a chicken?"

has a nice ring to it. 😀

Oh give it a rest, Blunty, trying to go all feminist on the OP.

The OP sounds a bit off but doesn't justify this pile on.

ItsAlwaysAFriendNeverMe · 14/05/2021 07:49

Sounds like the OP was trying to "test" her in a passive aggressive way. Probably set her up to fail, did you OP?

Were you trying to see if she'll pass this test on 'what a grown woman is capable of'? What else has she done before this because this one incident shouldn't typically cause you to question her capability as 'a grown woman' if there's no backstory?

ThursdayWeld · 14/05/2021 13:37

Another thread which has turned unnecessarily nasty. What a surprise.

Another poster who doesn't like it when they have their arse handed to them in AIBU. What a surprise.

KM38 · 14/05/2021 13:46

🤣🤣🤣 so weird!

  1. Why was there a chicken in the oven when it was off? 🤔 is that a thing that people do?! 😅🤔
  1. Very much depends on the oven. Mine is super simple - turn one knob to oven, other knob to temperature.
My mums LOOKS simple - turn knob to temperature and it will have you believe that it’s on - we have a fan, we have a light but there is no heat unless you press a series of random buttons, set the timer, stroke it 3 times the right way, make a wish and practically sacrifice your first born 🙄🤣 complete PITA!
Killahangilion · 14/05/2021 13:58

@ItWasLikeThatWhenIGotHere

DS knows that if he doesn’t already know something, Google or YouTube has the answer. Well, that’s what he told his dad when he couldn’t work something out. 🤣

AmazingBouncingFerret · 14/05/2021 14:13

I had to teach my husband about the importance of PREHEATING the oven before use after he fed me Young’s battered fish with oven chips (he’s knows how to spoil me!) that he’d just thrown into a cold oven. I was sick all night!

ThinWomansBrain · 14/05/2021 22:44

Just arrived on holiday - haven't tried the oven, can't even work the hob fortunately I had some food I could microwave - work it out in the morning.
