To be surprised she couldn't use the oven?

Last night partners sister came round and as I was on a potential new job call, I asked her to turn the oven on (Had a chicken in there already). When I got off the call, I checked and saw it had not been turned on. Aibu to say a grown woman should be able to turn an oven on?!
She said she thought she had done it.

@JinglingHellsBells

I'm more concerned about a grown woman not knowing how to cook a chicken :)

First rule of cooking

LIGHT YOUR OVEN FIRST

You don't want a chicken in there being warmed up slowly while your oven reaches the right temperature.

I often put my chicken in first then switch the oven on. As long as it’s cooked to at least 80°, it will be fine.

@MishMashMummy

Everyone thinks they’re clever until they have to operate someone else’s shower or oven.
Seriously?! They spend days practising the bakes.
ChillyB · 13/05/2021 15:35

She probably wouldn’t be able to work my oven without knowing how it works or having a good fiddle with it. It’s all touch screen type operations and you have to switch it on select the cooking mode you want, then the temperature then decide if you want to preheat it quickly and then press start.

LubaLuca · 13/05/2021 15:37

You don't need to introduce the bird to the oven in advance of cooking. Why was it already in there?

Atalantea · 13/05/2021 15:42

@ShirleyPhallus

Honestly some of the shit that gets started as threads on MN Shock

Exactly this Grin

Our oven is an ancient gas one and it's pretty easy to use, but the first time I used the one at my parents' house I was flummoxed Grin

I had to be guided through it step-by-step Blush

OP could have read "Does anyone know a way I can pick at the tiniest little thing my partners sister does, as she irritates the shit out of me"

Newmum110 · 13/05/2021 15:57

All ovens are different also if you are going to judge her I would just like to point out the oven should be preheated before you put the chicken in........

Sweettea1 · 13/05/2021 16:10

Can you not cook either? Surely you are aware you should pre heat oven b4 putting chicken in Confused

ItWasLikeThatWhenIGotHere · 13/05/2021 16:18

@Killahangilion

YANBU.

Unless it’s seriously space age with millions of settings, surely she could have turned it on easily enough? Does she not know how to cook?

My 12 year old knows how to turn our ovens on, so why can’t an adult woman figure it out?

The key word in your post is “our”. Did your 12 year old work it out by themselves or did you show them? Would they be able to turn on my oven without a hint?
Billandben444 · 13/05/2021 16:24

We've had our oven 2 years and I still have to get the bloody book out to set it to steam bake or pizza - why can't it just be on and off with a temperature dial? I chose it cos it cleans itself which is easy as we RARELY USE IT!

CorianderBee · 13/05/2021 16:36

Loads of ovens are designed differently and can be confusing to turn on

Zzzzzzxxx · 13/05/2021 16:43

My husband who is a fantastic cook. When he come to uni he decided he was going to make every one a roast dinner. When it came to eat dinner everything was raw. He didn’t realise
You had to turn on a cooker as he had grown up with an aga 😂😂😂

TheNoodlesIncident · 13/05/2021 16:48

We had to buy a new cooker when we moved house and bought a really cheap model as we were wiped out financially by the move. To turn on our oven, you turn the dial to the desired temperature and that's it. I hadn't realised how complicated other ovens have been made! Shock I don't really see the point of that? Ours is rubbish that the diagrams and markings have all been printed on, and that really does not withstand applications of Elbow Grease...

Aside from that, YABU for sniping at her when your oven settings might be complex and you didn't tell her how it should be turned on*, you are just coming across as a bit mean and unpleasant.

*Unless yours is as simple as ours, obviously

TeeBee · 13/05/2021 16:49

Oh god, my sister's oven is a nightmare to turn on. I once spent an hour looking for the manual as it really wasn't clear how to turn it on.

maddiemookins16mum · 13/05/2021 17:03

YABU, I have no idea how to turn on a dishwasher.

Bluntness100 · 13/05/2021 17:50

Well op the general consensus is you’re being unreasonable becayse ovens can be difficult but even more so as it appears you don’t know how to roast a chicken which you should do. 😃

RiojaRose · 13/05/2021 18:06

I have failed at other people’s ovens. Some of them are impossible for a newbie. And don’t get me started on old electric hobs which heat up a random burner irrespective of which dial you turn.

GroovyClementine · 13/05/2021 18:12

My oven looks like it's on when it isn't. The light comes on but the clock has to be set for the fan and heat to switch on. The fan is also very quiet so it's hard to tell if there's any other noise about. It could catch someone who is unfamiliar with it out.

80sThrowback · 13/05/2021 18:34

Perhaps she is used to a different oven? I would be fine with a straightforward oven similar to my own but I may take a bit longer to find my way round a much fancier one

Bluntness100 · 13/05/2021 18:36

Was your partner there op? Are they male? I’m assuming they were there.

Why couldn’t they turn it on?

LemonSherbetFancies · 13/05/2021 21:43

Another thread which has turned unnecessarily nasty. What a surprise.

The chicken was just a bake in the box type. (Piri chicken tesco one). Nothing wrong with letting it out the freezer and sitting it in the oven until it is ready to be heated up. I know lots of people who take things out the fridge or freezer for a few hours and then cook it later on.
Hiding this thread now as getting far too spiteful for my liking. Yes I was a little annoyed but some of these replies are just spiteful for the sake of it.

OP, in my opinion you were really nasty about your SIL and it's worse because she knows you and have no idea what you're saying behind her back.

Don't dish it if you can't take it.

ItsAlwaysAFriendNeverMe · 13/05/2021 21:47

*partner's sister.

Yet you are happy to write spiteful posts about your boyfriend’s sister!
